My problem is not distant stations (though I would still highly recommend this antenna for that purpose), but rather very close by stations that are almost impossible to receive with consistency inside my house. My house has aluminum siding and a metal, lifetime roof. It is, in essence, a poor Faraday Cage, but still wreaks havoc even with my cell phone reception.
I don't want a rooftop antenna because I don't want to make holes in my metal roof, plus you'd get weird signal reflections off of the metal roof that could be equally as problematic as an indoor antenna. I had some pretty good success with the passive flat antennas, but always had to fiddle with it to get to the next station, and then moving about the room caused enough disturbance to the signal that the TV would pixelate or drop the signal altogether.
I've tried numerous other antennas in an effort to avoid the ultimate need for an outside device, with little or no better success. Even a very expensive T**d high power antenna that was the worst of them all. In my den (mancave if you must), my room is actually 2/3 below grade underground, and I had good success with a two bay bowtie reflector style antenna, but even then, the challenges were too many for a consistent reception and required constantly fiddling with it on a rotating pole to try to lock in a signal. There's also a pool table in my den and being still in the room isn't much of an option.
So I decided to figure out a way to do an outdoor antenna, mounted on the wood railing on the elevated deck outside my kitchen. In my research, I came across this 1Byone antenna (this one specifically. They make some others that still wouldn't solve this problem.) I live so close to the broadcast towers I can see them from my deck. That in itself can present new problems. They're up so high that sometimes there's no downward radiation, so it could be all going over my head. They could also be incorporating what's called "beam tilt" and they could over power anything I put out there. So I took a chance with the above amplified antenna. My living room TV is Xfinity (blech) and I didn't want to pay them another $50 a month per room for TV. (all of my non-Xfinity TV's are tied to a small streaming computer so I can get whatever I want from Xfinity anyway, but I still wanted good local reception for when Xfinity screws the pooch.
So I put the cart before the horse and wired the three rooms from a central point in the basement with RG-6 and waited for the antenna to arrive. I clamped the antenna to the deck, installed the jumper to the amplifier and turned on the kitchen TV. Bubkus. Pure pixelation. All of that money and effort down the drain. So I thought, "OK, let's simplify and see what happens." I took a single piece of coax direct from the antenna to the TV and KA-BANG! Everything coming in at max signal strength. So I went back down to the basement, reassembled the mass of RG-6 and the amplifier, went back up to the kitchen, and bubkus. The same with the other three rooms. So what's going on here? One last simple thing to do was to bypass the amplifier. KA-BANG! All three rooms with perfect reception, full signal strength, and no pixelation. Problem solved! With the amplifier, I was just overloading the sets and they couldn't handle it (because I'm so close to the broadcast antennas).
This antenna is quite small in size and doesn't interfere with my deck at all as it's mounted on a corner behind the barbecue. It mounts on the wood with two lag bolts (provided in the kit) and takes about three minutes to assemble. I couldn't be more pleased. It's mostly plastic (except for the very nice pole mount being solid metal) but it's so well put together I'm pretty confident in its long term life.
I gladly give it five stars for my purposes, and I would be very willing to try it for long distance reception (with the amplifier in line). It should work especially well on a rooftop mount or even a side mount on an eve. Be sure to keep it in a horizontal plain as most TV stations still broadcast horizontal only.
Just a quick update: I didn't mean to demean the construction of this antenna by saying it was mostly plastic. It's really not, and the plastic arm is what holds the reflectors and the mount of the unit to the pole. It's very high quality plastic and I have no issue with that as it reduces weight and wind loading. Wind loading is what we broadcast engineers have to consider, calculate, and prove that the structure on which we're mounting an FM or TV antenna has sufficient strength to withstand sometimes hurricane force winds. This antenna has virtually no wind loading issues as it's so small and light and the pole mount is rock solid when using the included lag bolts. We had a storm of storms here the other night and I never saw one fade or pixelation throughout.
I live about 55 miles from New Orleans and just outside of the broadcast range of Baton Rouge also in a smallish town. After the latest in the annual round of Dish standoffs with my local NBC affiliate, I decided it was time to leave after nearly 20 years. Too far for a cable provider and not wanting to go with another sat provider, I decided to cut the cord and use OTA and stream with my Prime account.
I researched a bunch of antennae and decided to give this one a try because of the claimed range and am very glad I did.
I mounted it on the provided J-pole, pointed it at the correct azimuth (from TVfool.com) and it pulled in nearly the entire range of New Orleans broadcasts (all the majors, and most of the smaller independents too). Figuring on my annual savings, I decided to add another antenna to point at Baton Rouge, which is about 60 miles away and 150 degrees off azimuth from the other one. Mounted on the same pole, drilled a hole in the roof and flashed it with a boot I got here also (Oatey 14052 0.25-Inch to 4-Inch Master Flash). I ran power to both amps - this was an absolute necessity - and pulled the old Dish cable to run the drop to my living room TV.
Works like a champ. I am in pretty flat country but there is a big building right in front of my house and still the reception is quite good. Over the past week or so, I've noticed maybe one or two incidents of video dropout. That's much better than the performance from my sat provider, and given that it has rained a few times I'm quite pleased.
So now I'm pulling in channels I really didn't know existed and have at least two of each major broadcast as well. I should mention that I also bought a Tivo Bolt to use as an OTA DVR because of the channel guide and 4 stream record function (and because it has Amazon Prime and Netflix support built in along with a bunch of others including Pandora). This setup will cost me $15 per month and I really don't miss my former provider at all.
As to antenna build, the overall package is great. Well-packaged, and the antenna requires virtually no assembly. Just flip out the two "ears" and tighten with wing nuts. Attach to the provided pole which comes with mounting hardware for several installation scenarios, and screw on the coax. Then plug in the amp and attach your coax (not provided) to the TV.
My total cost to install for two antennae, coax, flashing boot was just over $115 and that pays for itself in about two months.
Overall I highly recommend this product for ease of installation, build quality and performance.
So, other than the ABC station and its substations, I get the CBS stations, NBC and its substations and about four PBS channels, and they all look much sharper and better than they did when the cable company was providing them. So putting up the antenna was a success and coupled with Sling TV, I am pretty much able to watch everything I used to with cable, for a lot less money.
The antenna is small and lightweight, and I had no trouble mounting it to the fascia of my house. I'm not big on heights and so I went up as far as I could on my 10' step ladder and mounted the antenna. If I needed to I could get to it and adjust it or take it down. I did not use the flimsy coax cable it came with but bought a 50' coil of decent coax to run down and into the basement. Pretty simple and straightforward.
I am definitely impressed with the reception I get, and if I could just get those last couple of channels it would be perfect.
Top reviews from other countries
I used this antenna for about 5 months. It was mounted in my guest room which is not being used. I planned to put it in the attic when the weather warmed up but after 5 months I lost 4 out of my 11 channels. It was a substantial loss. At first I thought the power was lowered on the transmission towers. This sometimes happens. However my signals were lower on both towers and never got any better. Then I read reviews where others experienced the same issue with the amplifier malfunctioning after a while. I bought a different antenna that did not come with an amplifier. I purchased a separate amplifier from Channel Master. Since I switched I’ve had even stronger signal on all channels than ever before and so far I’ve been using the new antenna and amplifier since early spring and all summer without a single issue. I think there are bad amplifiers being sold with this antenna. I would not buy it again or recommend it. It worked well when it worked but I’m quite disappointed at the money I lost.
Original Review:
I was using the Channel Master CM4228HD antenna for the longest while (which is also a directional antenna but more expensive) and was annoyed that I was missing 2 channels that I thought I should be picking up. I even bought a Channel Master amplifier and could not get the 2 missing channels which were 60.1 and 65.1 in Ottawa. I had 2 antennas hooked up, one for Herbert's Corners and the other pointing at Camp Fortune. I decided to give this antenna a try and now I'm getting all channels using the single antenna. So far this is the best antenna I've tried and I bought a few in between that did not work so well so I returned them. I'm surprised that given its size that it works so well and eliminates the need to have 2 antennas hooked up. My channel 42.1 was also very weak and would sometimes pixelate, but with this antenna everything is consistently sharp and clear. I totally recommend this antenna if you live in an area where you are struggling to get a good signal. I live in the Kanata South section of Ottawa.
Update: Mounted in Niagara Falls using the Channel Master 7777 and it receives 45 Channels - sometimes 48. It consistently has lower reception of High VHF band channels. I looked up folded dipole antenna designs in my old Radio Shack Antennas guide, and it verifies the issue. 1/4 wave folded Dipoles are more sensitive to lower VHF frequencies, This is why it has a less gain with channels 7 to 13. In Niagara falls it just barely picks up ch9 in Toronto and is very intermittent. I recommend adding another VHF rod to the antenna but a quarter wave tuned to the higher VHF bands (aprox 2 meters total span). All the Canadian stations are nearly unobtainable in Niagara Falls Canada with this antenna.
Update: I added a custom made dipole, and it helped only marginally. Since this is probably the best reception We will get in this particular area in Niagara Falls Ont., my family member will have to make due with a spotty CH 5.1 and pixelating hockey games.
