The WORST blender I've ever owned.
1 Star
The WORST blender I've ever owned.
First, I think I'm qualified to write this review: I once worked retail demonstrating various models of blenders. I actually had formal training on the subject (from Sears Sales Development MANY years ago). I've owned and used blenders for; well let's just say "a very long time".If you look down past the blade in the picture, you'll see a loop of gray rubber ring seal sticking up INTO the jar area of the blender. If you're thinking "that can't be good", you would be right. I carefully assembled the base, ring, and jar following the instructions that came with the blender. Three different rings, tested multiple times because I WANTED this to work properly. When I start blending a smoothie (whatever kind of icy drink you like), all starts well, the blending seems to be going well, and then a loud noise occurs, the blending is noticeably "wrong" - and your drink is running over the support sides of the blender and down onto your counter and the floor if you are not quick. What has happened is that the rubber ring gets pulled out from under the bottom of the jar, thus giving your "blend" a large space to run out. This happens EVERY time I try to blend using this model. No matter how firmly the base/ring/jar are assembled.Did I mention I've had lot's of experience with blenders? I should also note that the blender just prior to this one was also an Oster, the original Classic. I used it until I literally wore out the shank that turns the blade. I followed the directions that came with the new one, but whatever the case: I know how to assemble an Oster blender. Until this "whirlwind" model I have never seen the rubber ring be pulled out of position and cause the unit to leak.I don't know if it is the ultimate cause or not, but I will note that this blender runs counter-clockwise. I've read about that, but never seen it before. Seems to be the opposite of what you want - the old one was a clockwise spinner. As far as I can remember every other blender I've ever owned was clockwise - otherwise you are spinning in the direction that unscrews the jar. In this model they put prominent "stops" (which they tell you to be sure to use) to try to prevent backwards spinning of the jar. I expect some expert could tell me WHY going counter-clockwise would be good. I think it is counter-intuitive and that it contributes to the leakage problem at the very least. The Oster party line is that I must not be assembling it right. Baloney. There is something in this unit going wrong. It cannot be stopped by any effort of mine or anyone else in the family. Again, this is not my first rodeo. The unit is going back and I will not buy another one of this model. If you buy one or have bought one already, good luck. This is THE WORST blender I've ever owned.

This is perfect! Glass and Metal, easy to clean meaning it comes apart at the points where crud would collect. The Food Processor cup is plastic but that's ok, I'm mainly using it as a blender. Also as someone that only used a food processor for years to make smoothies...I realized food processors aren't for making smoothies. This blender is pretty quiet too. I also like the blade system it has.

Popular style! That means the price went up. The blender container is glass. The food processor container is plastic. All metal drive - the motor is quite powerful. Looks handsomely vintage sitting on the counter. Made in China. The useful long chopper must not be used for ice - otherwise it will become deformed, and at this time no replacement is available. For ice an accessory stubby ice chopper needs to be bought. https://www.amazon.com/Oster-4961-011-Ice-Blade/dp/B000BD6L0O/ref=sr_1_2

I have learned that no blender is perfect. I bought this primarily for the aesthetic look, the blade style, and wattage. It is powerful! The long blade is a little scary to clean but it crushed ice within seconds. It is a top heavy machine--the base is very light and the glass jar is substantial. I liked the fit of the lid (don't have to struggle with pulling the lid off) and the optional food processor accessory (which admittedly, I have not used yet). I have purchased several items from this seller (DiscountJungle) and always had an excellent experience with them, even though I prefer Prime. Yes, it is noisy, because it has a strong motor. But I have learned that there are critical differences between a $40 blender and an $80 blender so the added cost is worth it if it is an item used frequently.

UPDATE: It took three tries, but I finally got the Oster blender that the switch works and doesn't leak, doesn't mark up my countertop, or smell funny, and I absolutely love it!!. Amazon was wonderful to deal with on the phone, as usual, and after I explained I did still want it, but wanted one that could be turned on and did not leak , they sent me one that works so much better than the first two - I recommend ! ///// this was my review from the first blender I received : It leaks around the base of the glass. I don’t know if I am not tightening it enough or what. Cannot figure how to contact seller. I bought it because my daughter received one 11 yrs ago for wedding gift, and it is still going strong- fantastic. I bought this with the fancy blade, but have to keep an eye on it, afraid it will unscrew and leak while blending. Cannot speak to durability yet- wish base exterior was not such flimsy plastic. Note: this is the second one I had to order: the first one was faulty: the toggle switch would not move- was frozen in place when it arrived, and I had to return.
An odd thing: there is a slight “motor” smell when it’s running, and the rubber feet have rubbed dark spots on my counter, which are difficult to remove.

All I want is something to make smoothies with. All I need is an On/Off button and pulse. I've never used any of the other settings on my last blender. Why do people spend $500 on a blender? I don't get it. This is the best value for the money. Plus it comes with an AMAZING smoothie blade! How have I ever lived without a smoothie blade?! For fun I also purchased the milkshake blade that is compatible with this blender. Yum!

I love this blender. Oh, and it comes with a nice big glass pitcher. I hate the old plastic pitchers they used to come with.
