Amazon website for whatever reason will not allow me to submit a review for the 8TB version of this HDD once I submitted my review for the 4TB. Be that as it may, I am not going to change my rating but you need to be aware of one common quirk this 8TB version has that the 4TB HDD does not have. And that is, the 8TB "THUMPS", even when just idling.
It is my understanding that this is an artifact of the disk management software; regardless I find it terribly annoying anytime I have the drive in use. So annoying in fact that I want to relegate it to the floor someplace, anything to get it off my desk and out of earshot if possible. Functionally it seems to be on a par with the smaller 4TB drive, so no complaints there. To be very honest, had I experienced the periodic thumping sound it makes beforehand, I probably would have looked at another option. Filter out that thumping, and it a very competent storage device. Luckily I use mine as a backup drive so it is not very often powered up. I can live with it for the minimal time I have to listen to it.
ORIGINAL REVIEW FOR THE 4TB HDD
Had it about a month and have had no issues except initial installation. It is quiet, reasonably fast and just does what it is supposed to do. I don't seem to be able to get the sleep mode timer working properly; I don't care anyway. Long-term reliability to be determined over time.
Initial setup was just plug-and-play; didn't have to do anything extra, didn't need any instructions. It came formatted in exFAT for MAC-Windows compatibility. When I attempted to optimize, it would not show up in the list of connected drives. A search around the Web came up with a lot of intriguing but basically useless suggestions, some of which I tried. I finally went to WD Support and found that exFAT, although providing Win/MAC compatibility, prevents Windows from recognizing it when attempting to optimize. WD suggested that if you are only going to be on Windows, just reformat it in NTFS and all should be well. I did and all was well. This was mentioned previously by a reviewer but thought it worthwhile to repeat the experience.
