No problems with the router dropping connections on either the 2.4 or 5 GHz bands. Get very good speeds relative to my fiber internet connection, and I use the 5 GHz band for my main AV wifi streaming, since no one else around my home is using 5 GHz right now. But even with the 2.4 GHz band (where there are a lot of nearby and competing wifi routers), the ASUS model seems to do just fine and provides good connections throughout our one-story home.
Unlike some other wifi routers I've had in the past (hello D-Link...), the ASUS router's USB jack works just fine for plugging in a portable USB drive to serve an an informal NAS drive for my home to store music and video files for playback via Windows networking. Likewise, the ASUS firmware includes options for running either a VPN server or VPN client via the router (client being where you simply enter your own VPN service's user ID, password and server address, and boom, the ASUS router is automatically connecting to your VPN service. Another nice feature of that is that it allows you to store multiple VPN server address (location) profiles that can be changed/switched between with just a mouse click in firmware. With my old DLink router, anytime I wanted to change VPN servers within the router, I had to entirely erase the current server setting and re-enter the new one manually.
Last, another nice feature with the ASUS router is it gives you the ability to set up guest user profiles/SSIDs, with separate passwords, on the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Meaning if company or guests come over, and you want to give them access to your wifi, you can do so via the guest SSID and password without having to handout/share your own private household wifi password. And again, all easily set up and controlled within the ASUS firmware with just a few mouse clicks of settings.
Anytime a router just works without hassle, and you never have to think about it or fiddle with it, you know it's been a good purchase.
5G wireless signal is a little bit too weak on my iPhone 6S from the far end of the house. Switched to 2.4G and it’s fine. 5G still works great on my laptop and other devices with larger antennas.
Router won’t connect to Private Internet Access on OpenVPN but works fine with L2TP VPN. I suspect this is an issue with PIA rather than the router itself. Router is auto-reconnecting to the L2TP VPN after each ISP outage so that’s a good sign. I have yet to test for IP leakage during the transition when my ISP comes back online. However I can say for sure that the VPN is passing IP and DNS leak tests while it is connected. You will have to go to the router’s WAN settings and enter your VPN provider’s static DNS addresses in order to prevent DNS leaks. Overall, I’m satisfied with the router’s VPN capabilities and VERY happy with the consistent auto-reconnect keeping the VPN always on.
Original Review:
Been online for a few minutes and ran a speed test pulling a 2GB file from my network share.
Wireless speeds at 60Mb/s from about 35ft away through multiple walls.
Standing about 10ft away through 1 wall I was getting around 100-160Mb/s.
Standing right in front of the router I got 300Mb/s.
Test was conducted with a mid-2010 MacBook Pro on the 5G wireless only. It may be worth noting that this MacBook’s maximum wireless speed is 300Mbps. All other devices in the house were on the 2.4G network at the time, so this does not account for everything, but it’s a solid demonstration of the router’s capability for 300Mbps of actual throughput in optimal conditions.
Overall, an excellent wireless performance so far. As many other reviewers have stated, the bottom line here is that I’m getting viable whole-house coverage from this single device.
As for the web UI, it’s user friendly enough for anyone who has configured a router before. The only irritating feature is that any changes you want to make have to be applied immediately, and each change requires a reboot. This is fairly common practice for SOHO router web UIs, and for good reason, so ASUS loses a star on UI but not on the overall rating.
I haven’t tried to use it yet, but the router’s VPN setting offers PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN options. I will update this review after testing the OpenVPN and seeing how it handles ISP outages which are a daily occurrence here.
