But we got a Samsung 4K HDR TV recently, so when Roku introduced these latest models, we were tempted. When Amazon put them on sale, we gave in and got a Premiere+.
We are very happy with the purchase.
Most importantly, the picture quality including 4K programs is excellent - and this is with wifi streaming to the Roku box, because we currently can't have it located near our router for a direct ethernet connection. We are hoping to move our incoming cable internet wiring, modem, and router to the room with the new TV so we can have a wired ethernet connection to the Roku. But you should know that this is not necessary to get excellent picture quality.
The remote with the brand new Roku models no longer requires a direct line of sight. We actually put the Roku Premiere+ inside the cabinet that our TV sits on, so there's less gadget and cable clutter in plain sight on top of the cabinet.
The Premiere+ interface is quite snappy, making the Roku 2 introduced in Spring 2015 feel laggy in comparison.
The Roku smartphone app works better with the Premiere+ with no lag, and includes the ability to stream music, video, or photos from your phone's camera roll directly to the TV.
This is my first Roku with a headphone jack on the remote. The included earbuds don't sound that great, but using a $100 Bose headphone sounds decent plugged into the remote--not as good as plugging the headphone directly into the TV, but plenty good enough for most shows. Better yet, there's no lag in the sound when heard through headphones plugged into the remote.
Setup took 10 minutes. Plugged it in to the wall power and the TV, entered our wifi login and password, then let it auto-download the latest firmware update. Once I logged into my Roku account, it auto-installed all the same apps/channels I had on my previous Roku. The only slightly annoying thing was I had to enter my login and password the first time I used Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other channels. But this is much less tedious using the smartphone app, which has a handy keyboard function.
A few other reviewers here said they had to reboot their new Roku a few times. We haven't at all, and we've been using it heavily.
You can pay a bit more for the top model which includes voice search and a feature that makes it easier to find the remote if you misplace it. Those are the only differences between that model and the Premiere+. I recommend saving your money and buying this model instead. The excellent Roku smartphone app has voice search that works pretty well in our experience.
I haven't tried the latest Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV streaming boxes. I understand they are quite good, and I won't claim the Roku is better. But I think the Roku is excellent for the reasons I've given above. Plus, as with my two previous Roku boxes, it's easy to set up and super easy to use.
Highly recommended.
I was one of the first adopters of the original roku, and I long since thought, why bother updating the old little box if it is still working. So for 7 years after we cut the cable cord we let the one little box be our main form of entertainment. And it was amazing, and we were happy.
After moving to a new house I though perhaps it was time to update and get a roku3 as it had recently had a price drop. I will admit right here and now that I was again impressed and felt my money had been well spent. In our new house, with a new TV we have been watching clearer shows, more stable os on the roku, and loving some of the strange free content we find.
We still had our old TV and after a huge argument about no tv in the bedroom my husband put up the old tv in our bedroom anyways. Well fine, so be it. But damn it, I am getting another new roku. Why not save $90 bucks and just attach the old one, well....first off who doesn't like new, 2ndly the roku 3 and the roku premiere+ have headset jacks in the remotes which allow for the tv to be watched silently also they are close enough in attributes that they are fairly interchangeable.
I plugged in this item and logged into my accounts, and it's just amazing. It's a tiny box, that takes up hardly any space. It uses Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon and still has a pile of extra free channels of junk to watch. It's just easy to use. Seriously it's what the $150 /month Comcast should be but isn't - cheap, easy, dependable, and full of content. It's flat out amazing that for $21 a month we get damn cheap tv access, one that I would argue is better than the Comcast subscription.
People ask me all the time, how does one cut the cord. Simple you call comcast and you end the TV service, and the phone service (see my "obi" review). Have some DVD's handy, because you will detox from the TV addiction hard cord, and likely Comcast will remove the wrong services a few times. Have faith that the first few months to a year you will miss the commercials, you will want desperately to know which cleaning product will work work best, or phone features, movie trailers. But in time you will realize all of that is the power of advertising, you are literately addicted to it. Many will come to you and ask if you saw the new commercial about an item, and the Superbowl will suddenly be a huge product placement advertisement - and you will be clueless.
After about a year you will realize that pile of cleaners under you sink for the first time ever is shrinking, same thing with hair products because you no longer are under the spell of the advertisements. You bank account will grow and you will have spare money. No joke, partly because you don't pay $150 per month for TV; and partly because you are simply buying different products. The amount of money P&G, unilever, and others spend to attract new business will no longer effect you the same.
We had cable, and i went to target or walmart weekly for one reason or another. Food, cleaning, or personal supplies. Now, Target and Walmart are lucky to see me once a quarter. My needs remain the same, but now I just buy what I like in bulk quarterly. and only the Grocery store sees me regularly for fresh veggies. I joined a buy nothing group, and purchase even less. Seriously TV is an addiction and we need to stop staring at it.
