- Full 104-key Double - Shot ABS keycap - Double-shot molding is a process of molding plastic around a preformed metal or plastic insert, which is a very popular technique to produce durable keycaps. Velocifire mechanical keyboard with full 104-key double-shot ABS keycap which is impact resistant, lightweight and very durable.
- ANTI-GHOSTING - This is sometime used in place of Key Rollover, but the terminology is incorrect since ghosting is a different (and rare) issue. Product Description
Why mechanical keyboard?
If you spend most of your day typing, a mechanical keyboard can be a worthwhile upgrade over a cheaper, less comfortable keyboard. They're durable and meant to stand up against heavy use. The keys are rated for can last for about 50 million keystrokes or more, which is way above and beyond the standard duty expectation of a membrane keyboard. If you're the type of person who wants a good keyboard to stick with you for the long haul, or you notice you're hard on your membrane keyboards.

So, I was curious about this whole "mechanical keyboard:" craze, figuring it was just another fad among people who just want to seem cool. I've seen the way people drool about such things, making it look like these things are the be-all-end-all of keyboards. I figured, hey, they might be a little better than the cheapies I've been getting, and they have the backslash in the right friggin' place, so why not give a slightly more expensive keyboard a try this go-around?
Well, consider me pretty-well convinced. The keys, as others have stated, aren't all that "clicky". I wasn't particularly looking for that "clicky" sound, nor did I really want that "tactile feedback" of a switch that takes a ton of pressure to push down. If I wanted that, I'd go find an old-school IBM keybaord that feels like trying to hammer in nails every keypress. That's where the "hipster" feel of some of the reviews I've seen of other keyboards come into play. I wasn't looking for a complete revamp of my typing experience, but I got one anyway.
There is some tactile feedback compared to the cheap throwaway devices, and I'm already noticing that I can type a bit faster with this keyboard, since I'm a bit more secure that I'm actually typing something, rather than just swinging in the dark and hoping something connects. This is as easy to depress as a squishy little cheap-o keyboard, but it still feels really nice. I have a feeling I'm not going to regret this purchase, but there are some negatives that I may just go ahead and resolve with a couple other items.
First off, this thing is TALL. It's forcing me to type with my hands in the air, not with my wrists resting on the keyboard tray like I have with previous keyboards. This is a good and a bad thing, as it leads to fatigue, but that fatigue may lead to me not sitting in front of my computer as long! Definitely a good thing. This, however, can be resolved simply by buying a wrist rest of some sort, which I'm definitely planning on doing.
Next up, this is a pretty barebones type of keyboard, but this isn't actually all that big of a deal. it makes it take up far less space on the tray, and I can still use the FN key to raise or lower volume, which is about all I ever did with the media buttons anyway.
Next, while this is a positive for me, it may be a negative for others: this sucker is heavy. 2.2 lbs means this thing isn't going anywhere you don't want it to. It also means it's going to weigh you down if you travel with a keyboard. Probably not the best option if you're a gamer on the go with an already 8.4 lbs laptop, an external hard drive, a mouse, and the gigantic power supply for the laptop. I have no idea how they got the weight up so much, but I really don't mind it for a desktop computer.
I didn't actually notice the previously-mentioned speeds for the cascade effects. I have: Always-on, "breathing", down and up "waterfall", and "stacking", where the key rows light up in turn, then stay lit on the final row, then the next row is filled in the same way until it hits the top, then starts again. A neat demo effect, but far too distracting for me. I suppose if you're bringing this to a gaming event of some sort, it'd look pretty neat with the giant decked-out tower and all, but I'll just stick with my laptop for that kind of thing.
Also, the font for this keyboard really does suck. It's like some kind of weird amalgamation of stencil and "who cares anymore?", and it's a bit too small. I actually would have appreciated the alternate functions on the F-keys being lit up at maybe have the light of the actual F-keys, but that's a minor complaint, or rather, wish. I'm a touch-typist, so the letters and numbers aren't all that important to me. It's the alternate, less-used functions that I want to see in the dark.
Overall, if you want to get a feel for what a mechanical keyboard can do, go for this one. It's sturdy, easy to type on, and just feels nice. Minor complaints aside, it even has my preferred layout, with the "\" key *above* the "enter" key.I spent over a year trying to get used to it being to the left of it, and that was just futility.
Oh, and before I go, I am not a manual-reader, so I didn't realize this until just now: There IS a brightness control. Unlike a lot of other keyboards, it's function+arrow keys. Playing in absolute darkness? Middle-position. Playing with some ambient light? High brightness. Playing with plenty of light? Just turn it off! The keys are actually pretty visible even when the LEDs are turned off, so if you don't want to be all glowy for some reason, you can just use the white color of the... for lack of a better term, lenses, to see the keys you want to use.
Revised update: Regardless of my thoughts on this keyboard, which are largely positive, the customer service is what pushed this to a 5-star. These are real people who read reviews and respond to them quickly. I won't even bother mentioning why there was an issue at this point, because, simply put, it's being resolved in one of the best manners I've ever experienced with a company, local or foreign. It wasn't even that big of a deal, but they're going well out of their way to assure that things have been taken care of. Ebuystorm, you guys are fantastic, and if I see something I want on Amazon from you again, I'm not going to hesitate. They're even apologizing for taking 3-7 business days to resolve the issue. Seriously? Nobody is this awesome. Well, I guess they are! Anyway, my review stands on the keyboard, but I've decided I need to revise my review for the seller. Highly, highly recommended.
I always scoffed at the other programmers who were so insistent on using mechanical keyboards. I'd tried them, and sure they felt good, but I thought my old keyboard felt good enough. Well, they were right. After buying a tenkeyless 75% mechanical keyboard to use on the go, I found myself hating my old keyboard at home. Enter the Velocifire VM01.
Yes, I bought this keyboard because I'm cheap. When I got the keyboard, I was a little worried about the feel of the switches. The tenkeyless board I bought felt amazing to type on, it was an also an offbrand cherry brown switch, so I figured this keyboard would feel similar. But, things don't always work out as we think they will. The keys are quiet and provide the tactile feedback as you press them down. However, the action felt a bit different; not awful, but it left me wanting.
Another annoyance I had, was the feel of the keycaps; they don't have a good texture to them so they feel very slick. However, I had bought a set of yellow rosewill keycaps for $13 to replace a couple keys on my tenkeyless (just for aesthetics). I figured I would try swapping the keys and give this keyboard another chance. I am glad I did! The keycaps were having a noticeable impact on how the switches felt. Now I have a keyboard that feels great! Unfortunately, the yellow keycaps don't look great with the blue light, but I care more about the feel.
So, that leaves us with the features of the board. First, it's pretty hefty. I would not want to carry it with me anywhere, but that isn't an issue on my desk and it feels very durable. The lighting looks really good (if you have the right keys). The settings for the lighting are decent for the price. I rather like the waterfall effect when the speed is turned down. There's 3 brightness settings for each mode: off, medium, and bright. The media hotkeys are pretty convenient and are easily accessed once you get used to the location of the function key.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this board to anyone looking to buy their first mechanical keyboard, or just a budget keyboard to be used on another machine. If you replace the keycaps, it feels just as good as the more expensive boards.
