This is why I buy Makita
They might have a price tag but at the end of the day all my Makita tools work as they should. Today that cordless honed out two cylinders with a rigid hone then a ball hone that's serious continous run with a decent load. No hesitation no overload the drill didn't even get warm. Been on Makita for about 5 years now. I use my tools hard. Register your tools, clean them every so often and they are worth it and will last.

I purchased this drill to replace an older Makita BHP454 that finally wore out. The drill is significantly lighter and smaller than the BHP454, but performs equally well, in my opinion. During a two-day construction project that included building a 20x26 foot deck with an attached gazebo, I was able to test all aspects of this tool and it passed with flying colors. Driving 3" deck screws was generally no problem, although I found in some cases I had to switch to hammer drill (louder) mode when I maxed out the clutch in the screw driving mode at the higher speed setting. The drill was used constantly during deck laying, and I'm guessing the 2 amp/hr battery lasted 45-60 minutes. Given the fast charge time, we were never without a fully charged battery. The drill also did well drilling long pilot holes for 8-12 inch timber-lock screws, and was able to easily drive the screws using hammer mode. For general drilling, the chuck ran true and I could imagine using it for cabinet work instead of my beloved Festool CXS. There were no problems switching between modes, nor did I have any issues with the forward-reverse slide switch. My only ding is there was no bit holder included, so I purchased one on Amazon (MAK4192762) and it fit perfectly on the side opposite the belt hook. I think this drill would work fine for most people unless you are attempting very fine scale work in close quarters (that's why I have the CXS) or very large construction projects. It is light, powerful, maneuverable, and didn't weigh down my tool belt as I climbed up and down ladders or over rafters all day long.

This replaced a 20 year old brushed Makita that had a front bearing start to go, and I couldn't get the chuck off.

Wow! What a torque upgrade compared to the brushed models. This is a powerhouse whether drilling or driving fasteners this has real torque.

A+ and worth the upgrade from the brushed version, plus it is slightly smaller for getting into tight areas.

When it comes to power tools, I buy nothing but Makita. None of their tools have ever let me down. I bought this hammer drill to fill the gap between my Makita impact drill/driver and my corded Makita SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer Drill. The rotary hammer is a real beast and it breezes through any concrete drilling job I've ever done. BUT it's big and it's heavy and requires two hands to operate. Sometimes it's just too much drill for a smaller job like drilling a small hole in concrete block to install an anchor or a Tapcon. So this is where the cordless hammer drill comes in handy. It's the perfect tool for those smaller jobs. It's plenty powerful to get the job done in short order, but without the hassle of manhandling the big rotary hammer. It's got all the quality and great features I've come to expect from Makita over the past 20+ years and it's a pleasure to use. It's comfortable in the hand and the power for its fairly compact, lightweight frame is impressive. Its versatility makes it useful in so many different job applications. The Makita LXT battery system is the best in the business! What more could anyone ask for?

The drill is nice, powerful yet compact. The grip feels better than a Dewalt, IMO. I really wanted a hard case, and all the pictures and even the description of this item here on Amazon indicate that the kit comes with a hard case (at least at the time I bought it, in Feb 2021). But it does not, it comes with a tool bag. I later looked on Makita's web site and this kit (XPH12R) has never come with a hard case. Hopefully Amazon will fix this incorrect listing. The drill, batteries and charger are great, top notch. I would have given it 5 stars, except for the kit including a bag instead of the hard case. I returned it and bought the Dewalt DCD796D2 kit which is almost identical to the Makita kit and does come with a hard case and actually cost a couple bucks less.

Having other Makita 18V LXT items, buying this bare tool was a no brainier for $75 bucks. This is not the most expensive Makita LXT hammer drill. It's upper mid range, but I bought it for a relatively compact size. My use will be limited handyman type stuff, so it will fit that purpose perfectly. Like my other 18V and 18Vx2 Makita cordless tools, they still amaze me with their power and battery life. If you still have the old NiCad power tools where you can only get replacement batteries from China which work maybe 75% of the time, you might want to upgrade. If you upgrade the Makita 18V LXT system is unbeatable in scope of tools and the quality. Yes - Makita is Japanese, and like US companies does manufacture some items in China., And yes, these are manufactured in China. I also have the cordless 7 1/2" circular saw and the chainsaw, both 2 battery 18v x2 = 36V tools. Both are absolute beasts and function so well I almost never use my corded tools anymore, even where I have electricity. The sander, jig saw and saber saw round out a nice set. Seriously, I have enough batteries that use them almost exclusively.
