After trying Schwinn 270 recumbent bike at my local sporting goods store (Dick's Sporting Goods) and liking it a lot, I was contemplating between the 270 and the 230. Basically there are three main differences: (1) The 270 has 25 levels of resistance versus 20 levels for the 230. (2) The seat has cushion on the 270 while the 230 has a plastic seat with holes for airflow. (3) The 270 could have up to 4 saved profiles and the 230 could have 2. Number of profiles on the 270 might be a good feature for folks who would share the bike with more than 2 people but I was only sharing with my wife so it wasn't a big deal for me. And since the 230 is a new model (2016 vs. 2013), I decided to go with the 230 and I couldn't be happier.
Before I talk about pros and cons, I just wanted to talk just a little bit about myself so you get a better perspective. I'm 5'9'', male, 160 lbs, in my 30s, in a relatively good shape but nothing close to a triathlon athlete or body builder. I'm just a casual rider who puts in about 30-45 minutes, 2-3 times a week.
Pros:
- The bike has a very smooth ride on all resistances. No squick, no thump, just a smooth sound of a well-oil machine probably very close to those heavy duty commercial grade exercise bikes you see at the gym.
- Slider seat is so easy to adjust. I know for this price range, this is a requirement especially when two of us are sharing this bike adjusting back and forth.
- Sturdy! Of course as I described above I'm not testing this bike to it max limits since I'm just an average guy with average use but so far, nothing is shaking and nothing is loose.
- Low impact on your knees and joints but you could probably say the same on all bikes and elliptical machines.
- Programs. Many programs to choose from. Some are fun while others I'm never going back to but that's just based on my personal preference.
- Two LCD monitors. This allows me to put my iPad on top while I keep track of my workout on the bottom LCD.
- Great, knowledgeable and friendly customer service. Registering product and basic troubleshooting were easy.
- Assembly wasn't a rocket science. It seems all the parts that you think could be assembled in the factory, they assembled in the factory so good job Schwinn. But that doesn't mean I only spent 3 minutes putting this bike together like putting a hot pocket in a microwave. Think of the assembly process as preparing a delicious food using a slow cooker. It takes time but not difficult if you know what I mean ;) So I would say 1-2 hours depending on your skills.
Cons:
- 2 Profiles. Now this is not a con for me since I'm only sharing this bike with my wife but if you have 3 or more people sharing and want to save your workout results and progress, you can't do it with this bike. The 270 allows 4 profiles just as an FYI.
- The front panel / LCD dashboard does not look like the one shown on the Amazon page. Please refer to my picture. It is less shiny and you will notice the logo on top is not red in real life. Also the buttons are the same color as the panel but when you look at the picture on Amazon it is darker and shinier. This is definitely not a deal breaker and maybe I'm just being picky but I just wanted to note.
- Plastic seat and back. I personally haven't had any discomfort riding on a plastic seat but I could see that this may be slightly uncomfortable if you ride more frequently. Again, this is an exercise bike not a La-Z-Boy recliner so I expect less comfort from this bike. But then again, I could see that this could potentially be an issue.
Another note - I also purchased Supermats Heavy Duty P.V.C. Mat for Treadmills/Ski Machine (2.5-Feet x 6-Feet) to go with this bike in case you are wondering. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004IJI7HW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

1. Note the model “MY17-R270” – be sure to get the 2017 model.
2. Mine didn’t ship with a user manual – only assembly instructions. As of this writing, the only manual available and downloaded from the website is for the 2016 model. I got the 2017 manual by calling customer support.
3. Some things I’ve found (2017 adds):
a. There is a Custom User Program capability, but it’s NOT listed in either manual. (It wasn’t difficult to figure out)
b. The 2017 DOES have BlueTooth® capability – allowing at least automatic upload of sessions to the Schwinn Trainer app*.
c. Some kind of “VR Experience” capability – there is a page full of warnings for caution when using VR – but there’s no instruction or description of HOW to use VR with the bike.
d. I’m thinking there are other “Easter eggs”, but I haven’t found them… and I’ll bet the programming can be updated/upgraded!
4. * “Schwinn Trainer” is a smartphone app. “SchwinnConnect.com” is a website.
a. Both sync with MyFitnessPal.
b. Your session(s) can be downloaded to a USB thumb-stick, and then uploaded to SchwinnConnect.com via PC. If you choose to enable syncing to MyFitnessPal, the exercise is defined as “Stationary bike, general (bicycling, cycling, biking) “.
c. Alternately, if you open the app, “Schwinn Trainer”, your session(s) will automatically be uploaded to the app.
i. This is a great app. All aspects of the sessions are retained and displayed.
ii. If you choose to sync this app with MyFitnessPal (don’t sync both; you’ll get double entries – duh!) – it will define the exercise as, “Stair-treadmill ergometer, general “ – which is incorrect, and when synced with other apps/programs/websites is treated differently than “Stationary bike, general (bicycling, cycling, biking)”
iii. Contrary to both the user manual and the description of the app in the PLAY store, this app does NOT upload the sessions to the SchwinnConnect.com site.
1. Interestingly, I sent an email to Nautilus (manufacturer of the 270 and the app) questioning both the incorrect definition of the exercise AND the inability to upload the data to SchwinnConnect.com – their response ignored the incorrect definition and confirmed, "The Schwinn Trainer app does not currently sync directly with Schwinn Connect. You can still transfer data using a USB stick though."
5. Heart Rate Monitoring
a. The 270’s in “Contact Heart Rate (CHR) built-Sensors” pretty good – but you have to maintain contact with both hands and until I’m 5 or 10 minutes into the ride (when my hands warm up) it reads very high (180-190) – however once the contact becomes better it is very close to my FitBit Charge 2’s reading – AND it’s ”Average HR” for the ride seems correct –even though I frequently do not have both hands on the contacts.
b. The 270 does connect (wirelessly) with other HR monitors like a chest strap – but take note:
“The heart rate chest strap must be an uncoded heart rate strap from Polar Electro or an uncoded POLAR® compatible model. (Coded POLAR® heart rate straps such as POLAR® OwnCode® chest straps will not work with this equipment.)”
6. I’ve had it 10 days and have used it every day riding up to 45 minutes in a session.
a. The padded seat and perforated seatback are very comfortable, and feels very solid during the workout.
b. The 3-speed face fan works.
c. The included media cable connects an MP3 source to the built-in stereo speakers.
d. It is so quiet while pedaling that you can easily watch TV or watch whatever you play on your smartphone or tablet that you can place in the “Media Tray”.
e. The lower display (below the Media Tray) is configurable and can display the current workout values.
f. The “Water Bottle Holder” actually has 2 compartments and can hold things like a TV remote or phone in addition to a water bottle.
g. The seat adjusts quite a bit (I’m 6’1”, my wife is 5’4”)
and would accommodate a wide variety of heights.
h. The seat slide scale is pretty much useless – it’s hidden under the seat – it should be moved to behind the seat…
i. It was very easy to put together – the main components were already assembled, I had to attach only the stabilizers, handlebars/display, seat and pedals.
I’d buy it again and I’d recommend it to my friends.
Top reviews from other countries
Buena decisión, después de investigar varias marcas en web pages de USA,
La uso 4-5 días a la semana, (70+)
the instructions to put it together was good however the diagrams do not show the proper assembly, placing the seat in the wrong position. Make sure you look forward to the next step to see how to put it together correctly. Be careful not to pinch the wires , which the documents state. Other than the above it took about 45 min to put it together.
The heart rate monitor doesn’t work correctly all of the time and is not to be counted on for proper data. The seat is able to be adjusted and both I (6 ft 2in) and my wife (5 ft 4) can find the proper position for use.
One of the factors for me buying it is that it is bluetoothed and seem to work with all sorts of apps. If this is the reason you are thinking of buying it please move on. The bluetooth doesn’t have enough power to charge my phone and will only connect to the “explore the world app” which will transfer data to “my fitness pal” . It will not work with Zwift app, nor any other 3rd party app that I can see. I wrote the company about this and they were less than helpful is telling me what worked. I would have liked an app that could control the level setting rather than just show you a video as you go. This sucks as their app seem to apply it is good for other apps. Bluetooth does not show up as a discovery point on my apple or any other device I own.
As for the built in settings , and the ease of use, it is good which lots of selections. It is easy to change the resistance on the fly and the different levels is enough for most people. You can set goals by time, distance and calories easy and the goals will track. You are able to download this data to an UBS but I haven’t done this and their is no direction as to what app would even read it.
So far I’ve put 1500 km on it with no issues. The seat is comfortable and the petals fit well with use.
Overall , I like the bike but was looking for one that would have have better apps for making it seem more interactive , rather than just sitting in a room cracking out the km.
