Good capacity, so you can make a full French press. The hopper fits 7 heaped tablespoons of beans. This isn't a travel model, but one for everyday use in your kitchen.
It can be completely disassembled without any tools - no cheesy and irreversible snap fits. So, it's easy to clean and replace parts, should the need ever arise. The threads of the jar are big enough that some coffee grounds won't foul them. Same threads as a Ball jar, which is a nice touch.
The rubber grip on the bottom easily falls off, but it isn't needed anyway. Likewise, the lid for the grounds jar is a needless add-on.
- The floppy rubber lid on the Plus lets beans spill out if you grind fast. The hard plastic lid of the Pro snaps in place, eliminating that problem.
- The nut that holds the handle in place sometimes gets over-tightened, requiring a wrench to remove it. The snap-in mechanism on the Pro's handle is both secure and super quick to remove.
- The Pro has a nice rubber strip around the middle of the device, making it more comfy to hold.
- Adjusting the grind size is much easier on the Pro (but see below). The Plus uses a nut to adjust the grind size, very inconvenient.
- It could just be that my Plus is old, but the Pro grinds pretty fast. I can easily finish 20 grams of beans in 2 minutes or less.
But not everything is perfect:
- The Pro is harder to disassemble and clean.
- There's a spring mechanism that goes on grinding shaft that is difficult to remove. And it looks like it could be damaged easily, so be careful when removing it.
- There's a mechanism that allows you to adjust the grind size on the fly, but it's made of plastic and its durability is questionable.
- The grind size is somewhat inconsistent. Good enough for me, but might be a deal-breaker for hardcore coffee fans.
- More expensive than the Plus. But the design improvements make it worth the extra.
A couple points where it's a wash between the two:
- Zero improvement on the rubber base (for setting on a table). Both fall off way too easily. No biggie for me, though, since I prefer to stand or walk around while grinding.
- Spare parts are available (hario-parts-shop.com) but are too expensive because of shipping from Japan.
Overall, I'd reccomend the Pro and give it a 4.5/5. The Plus is more of a 4/5.
This is a good coffee grinder, make no mistake. It sits on my shelf. The amount of handle turning necessary has turned out to be a strong deterrent to using it. I got most of the way through a bag of beans, then started buying ground coffee again. At first, with a coarse grind for french press, it was okay. Doing a slightly finer than regular grind for the italian coffee maker was simply that, a morning grind. To use-up the bag of beans I left the grinder on the counter all day, giving it sessions of a few minutes at a time such that, by the next morning, I had enough to make that essential cup of java.
I thought it would be useful as well for grinding spices and cocoa nibs. It is not. In fact, that isn't a good idea. It gums up the works. You can factor-in that I tried that and had to clean it up. Perhaps it wasn't the same afterward. Seemed the same to me. Stuck to grinding coffee with it.
As you see, I still give it five stars because it works very well as designed. It is a super good coffee grinder. It's only that manual coffee grinding turned out to be an unwelcome addition to my day.
What I might look for (unlikely) is a grinder that has more grinding surface area. it isn't hard to turn the handle. It's only that you have to turn it a lot. If it was grinding more bean, with more effort and less time turning the crank... Yeah. I guess not. I like the idea. I like the idea of doing yoga and meditating every day. This turned out to be one of those.
-----------UPDATE 28/02/2018
I was wrong about Hario Skerton Upgrade Kit , does not fit this model, only if you like, this manual grinder are a improved version of other Hario grinders, but when i check underneat moving the the handle i easily watch a non consistent movement that causes a bigger coffe grains pass. Only need this adjustment and all will be PERFECT.!
