This is a Japanese hoe, and it excells at the tasks for which it was designed.
If you need to weed a flower bed, you won't find a better tool. It you need to "hill up" a short row of potatoes, this tool is perfect. Do you need to set out some strawberry plants or gladiolus bulbs? Look no further. This is the perfect tool for the job.
And if you are planting large seeds (like beans) you can get it done quickly with this hoe
I am now in my 70s. I am 6'4" tall. My back and knees are shot. But the thing that hasn't changed is my love of gardening. I can't get on my knees to pull weeds by hand if I want to get up when I finish. And I can't bend over to pull them up, unless I want to take heavy pain medication. But with this Japanese hoe, I can make short work of weeding, planting bulbs, large seeds, or potatoes, and hilling up the soil around potato plants as they grow.
This hoe does NOT have a full length handle. The wooden handle is 41" long (as opposed to 57"-60" in a full-size hoe. The diameter of the handle is about 5/8," which makes it smaller and lighter than its full-sized American cousin. And that small size and light weight is what makes it perfect for performing the tasks for which it was designed.
The business end of the hoe is stainless steel, and the edge is razor sharp, which makes cutting weeds off below ground level a snap. The entire tool weighs in at 16.5 ounces (1 lb plus half an ounce). There is a reason it is this diminutive. The hoe is designed to be wielded one handed. The people who complain complain that the hoe is uncomfortable to use two-handed have, I believe, missed the point. This is NOT a large, heavy, long-handled, Western-style hoe. Using it two handed would be like trying to use a traditional wheelbarrow with one hand. It would perform poorly because it is designed for two-handed use. It's not the tool that is at fault, but its improper use.
I just used this hoe to weed around the 4 fig trees I planted earlier this spring. Then I used it to weed a row of beets, and plant a 25' row of sweet potatoes. I was able to accomplish all these tasks easily while I was standing upright. Total time: less than 10 minutes. Honestly, I wish I had discovered this style hoe 20 years ago. I could have eliminated a great deal of pain I had thought was the price I had to pay to continue gardening. I was wrong. And just in case this tool becomes unavailable in the future, I am going to order another one now to have a backup in case something happens to this one.
I recommend this hoe without reservation. Just use it as intended, and prepare to be impressed.
Honestly, now that I have had this a couple years and used it a lot - this is the best hoe for light to medium yard gardening ... it is awesome.
Effective, light, easy to use, inexpensive ... the best!
Rating: 5/5
I'm so disappointed that it's currently unavailable as I wanted to purchase a 2nd one so I'd have one handy in the front and back yards.
