Product Description
Crown Tools 26016 16 oz Wooden Mallet. Made from solid beech wood with oversized heads our wooden carving mallets are perfect for extended carving sessions. The 5/4" head x 2-7/8" x 2" striking face allows for exceptional power, without damaging your material. This hard Beech wood mallet features a traditional design that is great for novice or professional carvers alike. Exceptional for woodworking and other uses, this woodworkers’ mallet (or carpenters’ mallet, if you prefer) is ideal for joining work, striking chisels, and other woodworking uses and it crushes ice like a champ as well (that makes it an ice mallet too). Looks great, we know looks aren’t the most important feature when buying a wood mallet, but it doesn’t hurt, either, this one looks great on your pegboard, and is a tool you’ll be proud to own. A wooden mallet (sometimes called a carpenters’ mallet or a woodworkers’ mallet) is a tool that may seem strange at first, but is essential for many applications, with woodworking being chief amongst them. Woodworking often calls for the use of chisels, with a hammer needed to tap / strike them.

That said, this is a perfectly adequate block of wood on a stick, which is the main thing you want out of a wooden mallet. I really only have two complaints about it.
The first is that it's slightly smaller than I'd prefer. It's a good size for fine work, but it's a bit small and light for working on larger furniture pieces or carpentry. This isn't necessarily a problem depending on the type of work you're going to be doing, and I really should have paid more attention to the listed dimensions. If you're looking for something for light work, this is a perfectly good mallet.
The second issue is a combination of price and construction. The handle isn't terribly comfortable for extended use, which is certainly remedied fairly easily. But I'd be more comfortable to shaping and smoothing the handle if the price were just a bit lower. Maybe it's just because I could make a nearly identical mallet out of scrap wood in a fairly short time, given the right tools. (I bought this mallet because I don't currently have access to tools or a workshop, but needed to pound on something.)
But it's certainly not a bad mallet by any means. And the price is pretty reasonable, especially if you're just getting into woodworking and don't know how to cut a tapered mortise to make your own mallet. I just wish I the handle were shaped a bit better so I didn't have to do it myself in order to use the mallet comfortably for more that a few swings, or that it were a few dollars cheaper to account for the work put into making it more usable.
