Not a $200 reel, but...

Not a $200 reel, but...
Considering the price...killer product. Others have mentioned the main flaw. The space between reel an the reel cage will allow the line to slip or get jammed between them occasionally. Not often enough to rule this reel out. I fixed the problem by building up the reel case/frame with metal epoxy and shaping it to close the tolerance. No issues now.The drag settings are very course. Pretty much little drag or a lot of drag with slight adjustments. My opinion, drag is over rated on fly reels. If you can dial in a setting you like, you're good. And you can with this reel.Great starter reel or backup.Update: was contacted by customer service. They felt that the reel was defective + it has a 1 yr warranty. They sent me a replacement within a few weeks. It's a much better reel. The spacing between the spool and cage is much tighter. The spool fit on the bearing shaft, is quite a bit better. I've beat the hell out of the first one and it just keeps working. QC might not be as good as one might like, but when this reel is right...it's a pleasure to fish with. Hats off to customer service. I'd check with them before you post a review. They are very helpful.

Nice reel for the money. Seems well made and comparable to name brands that cost 3 to 4 times the amount. Drag seems good and adjusts easily. I am using it for warm water flyfishing, so drag not real important. The included fly line seems OK but will probably replace it with my usual brand. However, I would have had the line cost even if I had bought the name brand at 3 to 4 times the cost, so not losing anything. Very happy with purchase. Will just have to see how it holds up over the long haul, but if it only lasts half as long will still be ahead.

It’s actually pretty nice. Bought this because it matched my moonshine rod and I’m the most surprised about the fly line included with the reel. This things actually really decent. Feels smooth and it casts almost as nice as my SA lines for a fraction of the price. Maybe I got lucky but I’m happy with buying it. The leader sucks but I’ll tie something up to compliment the line once I get the quarks worked out. For 30-40$ buy it.

I paired this 3/4 weight reel with a Fenwick World Class 6-piece, 8-ft rod and it balances very well. I wanted a smaller weight reel/rod setup that is easy to carry through woods and fish on smaller mountain streams in PA. Used it recently on the Lehigh River as a test (a larger waterbody than what I bough it for) and it casts very well. The fly line, backing and tapered leader is already included which is a nice bonus. The only thing I have to do is reverse the line because I cast with my left arm (my stronger arm) and reel with my right hand and this handle is on the left. The only minor issue is that the drag doesn't adjust correctly. At the highest setting, the reel doesn't even turn. The range of drag is way too broad. I only use the lowest 2 clicks, if that makes sense. I think there are 10 click settings. Overall, a very good reel that comes prespooled for less than $30.

I’ve had it out 2 times now. Love the light rod setup. Have caught some 17- 20” trout with it and it handled them pretty good. This is the 3 WT reel. I would recommend it as a backup rig.

The reel looks nice and seems decently tough. The problem I'm having is when I'm reeling in the line tends to bunch up on one side of the arbor then makes the line actually get jammed up in between the frame cross peice and the arbor. Or it will pop all the way thru. Not ideal when your fighting a 30 inch steelhead. I will say I was impressed with the line it comes with. Casts well.

I know it's a cheap knockoff reel, but for the price it's really pretty good. I have Orvis, Lamson, Hardy, and mostly other high-end reels, and this one was purchased to stay in my roofrack flyrod case so I didn't really want to spend a bunch. Bought on a whim. I had no real expectations but the line cast well and floated fine, the drag was smooth and easily adjustable, and it handled the first fish, a 4-pound rainbow, with no issue. I was able to easily adjust the drag while the fish was on without screwing up. And it's pretty good looking too. We'll see how long it lasts but so far it's been a good purchase.

First, let me say I bought this reel as a saltwater reel I wouldn’t cry over if I damaged it. Last time I fished from the beach, I dropped my spinning set up in the surf and couldn’t ever get the sand completely out of the reel or get the anti reverse to work again. I haven’t fished with this reel yet, so will post an update once I do, but here are my first thoughts.

My initial impression is that for under $20, I love the reel. It’s not perfect, but when you factor in the price, it’s nice looking, has an ok drag and seems to work well. The old saying, “Buy cheap, buy twice” definitely seems to fit, but for the purposes and price point I bought it for, I’m thrilled.

I wrote to Maxcatch after receiving my reel because there were some rough/slightly sharp edges on the spool. They immediately sent me a replacement reel, which is awesome. The only thing was that there was a huge difference between the quality and strength of the drag of the two reels (both 7/8 wt). The first reel had a solid, smooth drag, and every click of the drag knob made a gradual change in tension. The replacement reel required several clicks before the drag engaged and started increasing, but the intervals were much less gradual and the drag wasn't nearly as smooth. It went from virtually no drag to max drag too quickly, and the max drag was heavier than the first reel’s max drag.

Pros:

-Maxcatch is very responsive and stands behind their products
-pricepoint
-looks awesome
-has smooth bearings

Cons:

-quality control isn’t great—drag and fit inconsistencies between the two identical reels I have
-fit and finish aren’t perfect—some rough/semi-sharp edges and a tiny bit of spool wobble
-numbers on drag dial aren’t in a logical order (0, 3, 9, 6…hmmm), but who cares?
-(personal preference) the spool rotates freely to reel in line—there is no click on the retrieve or anything that keeps it from a free spin like a spinning reel
