How long will this UPS power my system when the power goes out?
Runtimes of any UPS will vary based on the amount of power required by your connected devices.
Will the UPS automatically switch off from the battery backup when power is restored?
Yes, when adequate power is restored to the UPS and is within the operating voltage range of the UPS, it will revert o passing utility power to connected electronics.
Will this UPS provide continuous power in the case of a power outage?
This Back-UPS has a typical transfer time of 6ms to 10ms to switch to battery power when the main power goes out. The transfer time is fast enough that most devices will not experience a power drop when the UPS transitions to battery power.
Can I plug the UPS to an extension cord or does it have to be plugged in to a wall outlet?
In order for your UPS to get the best power available, it should be plugged directly into the wall outlet. Plugging your UPS into a surge protector may cause the UPS to go to battery often when it normally should remain offline.
Which battery replacement should I purchase and from where?
The Back-UPS BX1000M internal battery has a lifespan of up to 5 years, depending on the usage and maintenance of the battery. When the battery is ready to be replaced, you can purchase model APCRBC158 directly from APC.

I have my HTPC, modem and router which use ~50 watts when idle. The UPS reports ~45 minutes of battery power for this configuration.
Pros:
- It works, saved my electronics during a surge and kept them running during a blackout.
- Respectable VA and wattage ratting. (~45min run-time @50 watts)
- No fan! Quiet (sort of, see notes)!
- The LCD is a nice feature to easily look at the status of the UPS.
- Good looking.
- APC powerchute is simple to use and seems adequate for non-industrial users.
Notes:
- Some other reviews are reporting a humming noise which I suspect is just transformer hum. There is a slight transformer hum in my unit, that can barely be heard when I'm less than 1 meter from the UPS. When I'm sitting on the couch (~2 meters from UPS) I can't hear it no matter how much I try to listen for it. However, my UPS is reporting a building wiring fault, which I suspect is the root cause of the problem and not something inherently wrong with the UPS itself. If you hear a hum, check the building wiring fault light, or if you know how to check for DC noise or ground loop faults in your wiring do so before blaming the unit as being faulty.
- Not really APC's fault but APCUPSD (3rd part interface) doesn't have working USB drivers for windows 7, so it wont work with this device.
It also takes a looooooong time to recharge. So long I thought it was busted at first. Wow. Maybe I'm just spoiled by lithium batteries and quick-charge tech. I totally missed that "Typical recharge time: 12 hour(s)" in the description. Pain.
In spite of this experience, I really like the idea of having extra protection for my equipment during outages and power spikes. I'm gonna save up and get a jumbo UPS for my PC too.
- front display showing remaining run time is extremely helpful
- compatible with linux apcupsd, so you can retrieve data, configure, and test even from some non-Windows systems
- easily replaceable battery when the eventual time to replace comes
- nice power in a smaller profile than prior models of the same capacity
A solid performer that I'd buy again.
