Perfect For Gaming On The Go!
This is my first gaming laptop and I was not disappointed. For a bit over $800, it's value is pretty great. I wanted something budget friendly as I have a gaming desktop already and just wanted to play games when out and about.Pros-- Keyboard and trackpad. Key strokes feel great and my hands feel comfortable after typing sessions and the red backlit keys look amazing! Some people have complained about the shape of the trackpad, but I haven't had any issues with it.- Build Quality and design. Even though it's mostly plastic, it's pretty durable. The screen has a lot of flex, but the base is pretty solid. Really like the design of the laptop overall. The cooling with this laptop is pretty good. CPU and GPU never throttled even after a few hours of gaming. Weight isn't bad and was lighter than I expected.- Storage. Even though it only comes with a 256GB SSD, it is very quick. Boot time is less than 10 seconds. There is a place for a 2.5" drive for more space. It isn't as easy as some gaming laptops, but easier than most normal laptops. There is no mounting for the second drive, but if you're installing an SSD like I did, it shouldn't cause any issues. Put a 512GB SSD in for game storage.- CPU and GPU. The combination of the 4-core/4-thread 7th Gen i5 and the 1050 Ti is great for a budget conscious buyer as laptops with the 1050 Ti tend to run a bit more expensive. The CPU never bottle necked the GPU, but did come close a few times. Games like GTAV, Rainbow 6: Siege, Wildlands, Witcher 3, and PUBG all run at medium to high-ish with 40-60FPS, which is perfectly acceptable to me. If you want more frames, drop setting lower and it should be good.Cons--The screen. With any budget device, some corners have to be cut to help with the price. The screen isn't very bright. This isn't a big deal to me as while indoors, it looks fine. Also, even though I found the display colorful enough, do not use this for photo editing or anything where color accuracy is important.- Battery. With just web browsing, I was at 50% batter after an hour and a half. I don't want to even try gaming on the battery. But I'm normally always plugged in, so it's not really an issue for me.- Ports. Not sure why companies are still putting USB 2.0 ports on laptops, but I can only guess it has to do with cost. No second display out, just an HDMI. USB-C connector is just USB 3.1. No display out, no Power Delivery. All of this to me isn't a big deal, but it might be for others. In Conclusion-Over all a great budget laptop that offers more than others in it's price range. I have actually been strictly gaming on this laptop instead of my desktop to really put this laptop through the ringer and I've been pleasantly surprised by it. Granted I have to have the graphics on lower settings than the desktop and the CPU isn't nearly as good for video rendering, but for the price, it does a spectacular job and I could not be more pleased with my purchase.

I was quite happy with the speed, battery life and I was able to play videogames. But guess what? After 5 days, it went to a blue screen with a system error. I don't torrent, I don't download suspicious things of the internet. Only Steam, Office and that's it. I had a good antivirus too. Couldn't do the automatic repair, even after trying all kind of resets, even factory reset the whole thing, it's stuck on a loading loop before the sign in screen. Oh, and don't bother to call Lenovo customer service. Waited more than 20 minutes and no one picked up the line to answer. This is freakin' garbage, don't bother buying that piece of crap.

Product reviews and advertisements across the web have stated this laptop to be 'VR-ready' or 'VR-capable'. This categorically isn't true with regards to the Oculus rift. The Y520 has an NVIDIA 1050 TI and an integrated graphics card. The HDMI out socket is dedicated to the latter and cannot currently (24 July 2018) be reconfigured to the former using nvidia optimus. What this means is that the HDMI out doesn't register with the Oculus during configuration and setup of the headset.

Otherwise this is a good laptop for the money. If you have no interest in VR then this is worth your consideration.

This is a very nice gaming laptop. First thing that I immediately noticed was how thin and light it was especially considering it's a gaming notebook with discrete Nvidia graphics. The aesthetics is also very nice not tacky like many other "gaming" laptops. You have many ports on this model including HDMI, USB 2.0/3.0/C, Ethernet, SD card slot. There's super fast WiFi AC and Bluetooth 4.1. For storage it uses a 256GB SSD drive but no optical drive. This model has a full 1920x1080 IPS matte display. The keyboard is super accurate/precise and is backlit with red LED lighting which helps to preserve night vision when playing in a dark setting. The stereo speakers have great sound especially since it's Dolby tuned. There's an integrated webcam with dual mics.

I tested this notebook using 3D Mark's DirectX 12 Timespy benchmark and have attached a picture of the results. For games I tested Street Fighter V with all graphical settings set to max and was getting 60fps consistently. I also tested Hawken with high graphical settings and it ran smoothly even at the full native resolution. This computer has a very nice cooling system. You could manually enable extreme cooling via the Nerve Sense utility at anytime.

I really enjoy this laptop and use it to play games such as Madden and Civilization. The biggest issue is that you CANNOT travel with this laptop in sleep mode. Any sort of bump and it wakes up. This, obviously, is a major issue if you have it in a backpack or case of any kind. It will turn into a small inferno and the battery will run until it either dies or something gets damaged due to the heat. I've owned this for about 6 months now and have already had to replace the SSD because of this. It is really frustrating that there is no internal shut off for if it is overheating.

Other than that somewhat major issue, this is a great laptop. If you purchase, please be sure to shut it down completely before moving it. I still forget upon occasion (as I did today) and I would guess that I will be buying a replacement in the foreseeable future.
