I give it a 5-star rating even though I give it 4 each for stability and maneuverability. There are reasons for this. STABILITY: You need to learn to use it properly and always be aware of what you are rolling on and where your body is in relation to the scooter. I did topple over it early on, but I was not paying enough attention to my center of balance and how the scooter was sitting on an area rug. MANEUVERABILITY: My house is not large and so turns are not always a smooth circling motion. But I learned which paths into rooms and around the furniture to take, how many multi-point turns I need, etc. It works just fine in my smaller space but I had to learn to make it work. Once I got the hang of these things, I have had weeks of mobility that I could not otherwise have enjoyed.
The basket actually holds a lot, reading books, or a thermos of coffee and bottles of water, a purse, etc. WARNING: The bag can actually hold more weight than is prudent for use of the scooter. If you overweigh the basket and then lean onto the handle bars, you can feel it become front heavy. Take that as a cue to travel lighter, lol.
The handlebars fold down toward the seat quickly so that my husband can easily put it in the back of our SUV for excursions. And after I was feeling better from surgery, we've had many excursions. I have worked my way up to a trip to a huge box store and the biggest challenge is to not go faster than is considered safe. On a smooth floor you can really glide along. I liken it to a skate board for speed and ease of locomotion. Anything but very small pushes with your working foot can propel you beyond a safe walking speed. It doesn't require excessive effort.
It's not very useful on gravel, but pavement, hard floors, low pile carpet, concrete surfaces are all easily traversed. It is tricky on snow and icy spots, as the wheels have no tread or traction. The brakes, also, are inadequate to hold back yourself and the scooter on declines. Our wheelchair ramp is unusually steep so I like to have someone in front of me helping to hold it back. Otherwise, on less steep declines, I can do it with care using my body position and good foot to slowly navigate my way down.
NOTE: I have a bony knee that is painful to kneel on in the best of circumstances, but by purchasing an add on cushion and then adding even a couple more layers of cushion below that, it has made it nearly pain-free for my use.
I will also say that extended use can cause hip and lower back pain but that is more about the altered ergonomics of trying to move your body in a way that was unintended and less optimal than originally designed. I do not attribute that at all to the scooter itself.
Truly, having such a well-made and easy to use scooter has made my recovery quite livable. I've even tarted her up a bit with sparkling bike streamers in the handlebars and a cheery bell. I am grateful to have found this product and would recommend it.
What I didn't consider was the difficulty in assembling this new scooter. Some of the pre-drilled holes did not align with one another, making it impossible to bolt together. As this really isn't the kind of thing you can return (seriously big and bulky, and disassembling it to fit in the box really isn't an option), we ended up using a drill to correct the mistake in the pre-drilled holes and the assembled the scooter.
The scooter works fine, although it is not nearly as robust as it appears in the pictures. In particular, the tires are no bigger than the ones on the old scooter, and have wheel rims with cutouts, instead of the more solid wheel rims on the older model. The weight limit is supposed to be 300 lbs, but I would make sure that whoever used it weighed well under that amount. The plate that holds the knee cushion appears to be the Achilles Heel of the scooter. On my old scooter, it bent into a "U" shape, rendering it unusable. This scooter appears to utilize the same plate, which makes me a bit nervous. Still, I hope that this scooter is sturdier than it appears to be, and that it lasts at least two years.
