Product Description

Room to room, house to house or home to work, LG’s portable air conditioner is the ideal climate-control solution for when you’re on the go. With a sleek, contemporary design, this free standing portable unit blends in with any room decor. Our auto-swing air vent technology makes sure you enjoy every bit of cool air by circulating the cool air more efficiently so no hot spot will be left untouched. The auto evaporation system allows for continuous use and with the programmable 24-hour on/off timer, you can control the temperature even when you’re not there.

In October 2017, the Department of Energy implemented a new test procedure to determine the BTU rating of portable air conditioners. The procedural change has adjusted the amount of BTUs allowed to be claimed downward by as much as 50%. There have been no internal changes to these units, and the functionality remains the same. Please refer to room size guidelines to find the portable air conditioner that best meets your needs. Dry air flow (CFM) 250 Dry air flow (CFM): 250 cooling power: 8000.

So far, so great... it's chilly in here!!!

So far, so great... it's chilly in here!!!
UNBOXING: Not bad. The unit arrived today in its original LG box, no exterior box, but luckily it was unscathed. Unboxing would've been easier if I realized first that the box could simply be pulled up from the top to reveal the unit... I figured it out, but only after I made a mess in the living room.DOES IT WORK?: YES, this unit has cooled down my stuffy, sweltering hot bedroom to a comfortable, downright chilly, 70 degrees on an 85 degree day! It WORKS![Background: I live in a second story, treetop view condo. Lots of light through the many windows and great shade trees in the building. No A/C needed in most of my home because of the great cross breeze. But the room this unit is installed in has two windows that don't face out toward any other windows. So, no cross breeze or air circulation.]EASE OF INSTALLING?: 3.5 out of 5 stars. The directions were clear and the online video from the LG site was helpful. It took me about and hour from unboxing to completely installed & running. I did it by myself, so may go quicker with help.BUT attaching the vent hose to the part that slides into the window panel is tricky. The directions make sense, corkscrewing it on counter clockwise. However, once I had everything connected as per the manual and went to reposition the unit into its exact location, the hose fell right out of the window diffuser part, just completely disconnected.So... TIP: just do the connect to the window panel part last. If I had to do it over I would: set up the window panel, connect the hose to the diffuser on the unit end and lock that into place, then plug it in, position it exactly where you want it, then connect the last diffuser to the window end of the hose and then that to the window panel and fasten in place with the screw provided for safe measure, and finally power it on.NOISE LEVEL?: Loud, like a large fan on High. I don't mind it, I like the white noise to drown out other noises at night because I'm a light sleeper. However, if you require silence at night, this may not be the unit for you.LOOK?: Just like the picture. Sleek, clean white glossy finish on the front and grey on the back. Streamlined control panel, flush with the unit.REMOTE?: Yes, very easy to use and includes a Swing feature to have the panes move up and down to assist with air circulation. Very nice feature!Overall, very nearly a 5 star rating with a little shaved off for the difficulty with the hose as mentioned. This is a very early review, but I will definitely return and edit if necessary (fingers crossed!)

Received via UPS, Amazon Prime 2-day delivery. Took 3 days, but arrived intact, and no physical damage whatsoever to box or contents. Pristine condition. Took a few moment to find all the pieces, they cleverly package one of the plastic hose-to-widow piece under the packaging inserts, almost through it away. Make sure you have all pieces listed in manual, before dumping box.

Easy window inset, in my SRO-type, small place here in California. My room would reach 78-80 degrees regularly with all the tech running in here. My PC and video card kick out a lot of heat - jokingly it is rather convenient during cold, winter months. During Indian Summer, I have to shut it all down to avoid damage.

Since installing the LG 8,000 BTU portable - I can easily remove it and put it away during the cold months, and setup quickly during the hot months. It can be kind of loud during full-power operation, so I usually set it on Low Fan setting. Perfect for my size room, cools down quickly and set for 73 degrees when I'm going to sleep at night - as goes into a cycle where the compressor to air conditioner will turn off and just slow fan setting will kick in. Love it, sleep like a baby with the fan white-noise.

I don't know if it my imagination but the air seems filtered and cleaner than before - removes a lot of dust and odors too.

Convenient, compact, affordable, and easy to use. I am very pleased with this purchase. No 103 degree suffering for me, I'll be chilling at 68 degrees with a cold beer.

** Just in case you don't know, ALWAYS keep the unit standing upright. Like a refrigerator, tilting it sideways will get the coolant in places it shouldn't be. So I heard. **

Drawbacks (which are minimal and almost not worth mentioning):

Internal water tank (though it may be my fault) filled up pretty quickly the first night I had it though it was alot more humid than normal. The tank was full after about 4-6 hours. Had to drag the whole unit upstairs into the backyard to drain it, THOUGH I didn't have the room door closed and it drew air from upstairs essential trying to cool the whole house. Since then, it's been going for maybe 2 months now and haven't had to empty it since. You can also just hook up a hose and have it drain as it collects. 5/8's inch is the outside diameter of the hose you need (so the instruction manual says). Haven't done that yet and haven't really needed to.

The only (SMALL) thing is that you have to make sure the remote can see the sensor on the unit. Your remote may say it's at 72 but the unit may be at 73, and vice versa. Though you will hear it beep when it actually reads the remote and it will correct the temp to whatever is on the remote.

Also (good/bad... You decide), the fan is always on. Not sure if it's a setting or not, but whether the compressor is on or not, the fan stays on. About as loud as a box fan, maybe a hair quieter. An AC fan in a home just comes on when AC cools. Once again, it may just be a setting.

** Anyway, all the good things:

- This thing blows. :) 2 speeds for the fan.

- It has casters, so it rolls.

- Adjustable fins on top that will automatically adjust from sideways to nearly strait upwards, depending on fan speed.

- Set this thing at 71 or 70 in a 200 sq ft room, and you WILL need a blanket.

- It comes with the collapsible hose (maybe 5-6 feet of it with all the adapters to fit your window.

- You don't need any tools to set it up.

- Remote comes with batteries.

- In case you have to pick it up, there ARE handle indentations on the sides (like a cardboard box would have).

- Unit draws (according to box/manual) i.8 amps. I haven't verified this with my ammeter, but i'm guessing it only draws that much when the compressor starts.

- The 120v plug has a built in GFCI, so need to buy your own.

You can put in a 5/8's OD hose and insert it into one of the two drains to drain automatically. There are 2 drain plugs and when I emptied it, most of the condensation came out of the bottom one. Maybe a tenth of what came out of the bottom came out of the top one.

Well worth the $$!!

So I've had this for a while, used on and off in different intensities of heat so I think it's a good time to share my experience for others.
So the AC unit is pretty decent for the money it costs. If you're looking for something that's not only functional but also looks pretty sleek, this is a pretty good purchase.

So first off, this thing is pretty heavy. I guess that goes without saying (and I didn't check the weight when I bought it), so definitely get help moving it. The packaging also doesn't help this rectangular shape but that's later. It's around 70lbs, which is pretty hefty for a large object, so if you don't have help get a dolly. But once you unpack it the unit has wheels on it, so it glides smoothly. I move it around on fairly thick carpet with hardly any resistance.

Big question: does it cool? Yes, yes it does quite well. Now keep in mind this is a moderate BTU unit, so keep the size of the space you're going to cool in mind. I bought this for my living room and it's a bit bigger than 200 sq feet, still works great once it gets going. So I used this in weather that ranged from 80-100 degrees outside, and my apartment reflecting a similar temp. Not too long after I turn it on it's pumping out gloriously cool air (I usually set it for 75 and on low fan). It will take a while to lower the ambient temperature of the room down, that's for sure, but depending where you have it situated it'll be hard to tell; it cools the general air around it and you quite nicely; to the point I actually get pretty cold (though it's fairly close to me, so I might just get more of the cold air). Go into a different room? You'll feel a temperature difference big time. But again, it's supposed to cool the room, not the entirety of your apartment/house.

I've seen reviews say the fan is loud. Of course it is, the fan and the condenser are fairly audible, nearly every AC unit is, external or otherwise. Will you have to turn your TV up? More than likely. If any sort of noise bothers you then yes, the AC unit will probably keep you up at night. After a while it's white noise to me, so I tend to tune it out. I can't say how much louder it is on the high fan setting, but I imagine it's potent. Oh, and it does have a few settings and a remote, so you can have it keep your room chilled at a certain temp or control it manually if you don't want to push the buttons on the unit.

The hose to hook up to the unit and into your window to expel the hot air is pretty simple to set up. The directions are easy to read in a step by step process, showing what you need to do. It has pages for various style of windows, both horizontal and vertical, so it should work with whatever you have. My windows are wonky horizontal panes, but I can still secure the window brace pretty easily. There's also some adhesive strips to help with sealing so less air escapes between the brace, so if you want to/can use it, it's provided. The extensions for the window brace fit up to about a 50" window, which is probably near all window sizes. The hose is also expandable/collapsible, so you can extend it from the brace to your unit in use, then when done just collapse it and it can get neatly tucked away.

So one beef - and if you read these LG, do what you can - is the box packaging. The base of the box is not the most sturdy of cardboard especially below a 70lb object. It needs to be a little bit thicker to compensate for shipping and transit; otherwise it could be fairly beaten up and the risk of it breaking, slipping, or something rises and that could the device if it drops or the person moving it. Also maybe another of the plastic bands that go around it - one of the two busted on mine by the time it was delivered, so I had the flimsy cardboard bottom and one less band to keep everything together.

Still, solid product for a good price and so far, no problems whatsoever.

5.0 out of 5 stars works great. I had to custom build a window adapter ...
Reviewed in Canada on June 12, 2018
Have been using it for a few weeks now, works great. I had to custom build a window adapter kit because I have a casement window, some plexiglass and velcro did the trick and using the window adapter kit as a template was able to mate it with the vent quite easily. We have this in our bedroom and turn it on a few minutes before we go to bed and the room will already cool enough to sleep in.

Be warned, it's loud, even setting the fan to low barely makes a difference. I can live with it since it acts as a white noise generator but some maybe have problems sleeping with it on.

5.0 out of 5 stars it doesn't move that easily on carpet
Reviewed in Canada on May 10, 2018
We bought this 8,000 btu unit for a 13x13 upstairs bedroom after lots of research. My window installation required using both of the provided extension panels. Each needs a tightening screw but for some reason, LG only provides 1 tightening screw. To keep the hose from falling off the window vent, instructions say to push in place then slide down. This was impossible to do with the panels in the window. Had to take then panels down and do this while actually looking at the backside to see how the push in, then the slide down (need to use pressure), actually works. I also use a screw as the instructions suggest as insurance that it won't fall off again. Seems to have done the trick so far.

As with most things with small wheels, it doesn't move that easily on carpet. Due to the hose length, or should I say shortness, we had no placement options. Hose length is 5' (60") when pulled straight out, but in practice is shorter. LG says you cannot extend or use a longer hose. Where it's placed means the remote doesn't work from the far side of the bed as the sensor is located on the front of the unit where the LG logo is, so it's too low to detect the sensor. The remote is not back-lit so you can't see it in the dark. Top louvers are a good choice. A unit with front louvers means the air flow would be at the level of the mattress.

No question it's somewhat loud on high fan speed and louder with the louver swing on. Keep in mind it's a portable a/c unit, so you can't expect quiet. On low with no swing did not keep us awake. We use the timer to automatically turn it on mid-afternoon. At bedtime we change the fan to low, turn the swing off, and set the timer to turn off after however many hours we want. All the sleep option does is turn the fan to low and set it to turn off in 8 hours so it's pretty much useless. Too bad there's no memory to keep your timer on/off settings rather than have to set it every day.

If this unit keeps functioning the way it should later on in the summer when it'll be way hotter than now, we'll probably get a second one for the other bedroom. My hope is we don't have the same issue the one star reviewer had, that being that it works this summer but when we pull it out next year it's dead....

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool Air Conditioner
Reviewed in Canada on September 9, 2018
I found that this Portable Air Conditioner does a pretty good job in cooling the place. Having the remote control sure does make it easy to change the temperature or turn it on or off from my bed. It is a bit nosy when the fan is on high, but by putting it on low and using ear plugs I have no problem sleeping. As for setting it up to the window it was easy and it has real screws (my other A/C came with plastic ones).
Here is a tip to help keep the room cooler: Tape spiral duct wrap around the vent hose. Since the duct wrap is an eye sore, I made a shelve cover for the vent hose from cotton fabric and slipped it over the wrapped vent hose.
Amazon.ca sells the Reflectix duct wrap and the Reflective Insulation Tape. ((As for the vent hose sleeve you will have to make one.))

4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good. Installation was really annoying
Reviewed in Canada on July 10, 2018
So far so good. Installation was really annoying. The panels for the window attachment don't really "fit" together perfectly like you would think they would - might sit better if you have it on a horizontal window but the panels are just held together with one screw that barely fits. I needed it for a balcony door so vertically it doesn't work well. had to tape it in place basically and also add a portion on my own at the top because the panels don't fit the height of a balcony door. Hose is annoying and difficult to install - you will have to be patient. Once its all installed it's been working great for me. It's really not that loud especially when compared with other units. Doesn't seem to always respond to settings on the remote - set it to turn off after 2 hours from the remote once and it ended up staying on all night.
