- PLENTY of air, even on Low!!! (I barely need to use Medium let alone the High mode except to possibly air out my hot room somewhat faster at night during a California heat wave.)
- Nice, quality feel overall
- The floor base is heavy which provides sturdy support (but almost too heavy)
- Easy enough to put together with or without manual.
- Remote works pretty well
- Fan design is decent to look at, but nothing super fancy (could be a pro or con)
Cons:
- The cord is easily too short. Maybe 2-3 ft shorter than our 10-yr-old cheaper Lasko pedestal fan. (Expect the short cord to be dangling in the air if you don’t put the fan right next to the AC outlet without an extension cord.)
- Low speed is a bit loud/powerful for the lowest setting, at least from what I am used to. All the speed modes have this constant propeller plane type of noise to them. But again, it pushes A LOT of air even on Low mode, and that I am used to a bit cheaper fans that are hardly noisy at all on Low. When setting this fan to its maximum height, the fan pushes back a bit even on Low. Also, the Low speed is between a quieter fans’ Medium & High mode. Honestly! (Either from blade noise or the motor noise, or both.)
- The fan and remote buttons give off a high-frequency sound and can be irritating to hear all the time. You will know when someone is pushing the fans’ buttons, perhaps across the hall or another room depending upon how sound travels. You might wake someone with these beeps too! (I wish there was a way to turn the beep mode off! You listening, Hurricane?!)
- I can tell this fan is going to be quite a bit heavier than previous models, especially due to the heavy base. Not a big deal for the average person like me, but the weight difference vs other pedestal fans is quite noticeable.
- The plastic, removable remote holder is a bit flimsy, especially when you want to lower the fan, since the plastic remote holder attaches to the pole beneath the controls. It just feels cheap and unnecessary. (Might I suggest a DIY velcro job for this remote and set it on top next to the oscillation switch?! Hint hint!)
- The all-metal grills, when put together, can sometimes cause an annoying metal vibration/rubbing sound even on Low mode. It happened when I first put the fan together in June, and again September after rinsing off the dust. Hurricane should have put some sort of dampener(s) on the contact points to prevent this. The vibration sound usually will go away if you take off the front grill and replace it slightly and rest as you go. I am sure one could install some dampeners, but I haven’t tried any myself.
- Unless you are a small child/person, the fan controls on the unit itself will be blocked by the bottom portion of the blade grill; especially if fan is low to the ground. Just a minor annoyance really, but our cheaper Lasko fan didn’t have this design flaw! (Something I noticed after use this summer.)
Installation:
So, upon first setting up the fan out of the box and using it the first time, I had no issues. The only thing that kind of annoyed me was that the 2 metal grills would clearly be vibrating on one another when the fan would start up, but the vibrating grills would quickly quiet down after a second or two. I just had to realign the front metal grill a couple times to stop the vibration noise. Again, the fan worked fine, and it’s such a minor thing, but I am glad the minor grill noise stopped. I am used to fans with plastic grills, or a metal front that connects to a plastic back side grill. Since it’s a new fan, I just wanted it to be perfect haha. I guess if the metal grills make noise in the future, I could always put some sort of dampener between the two metal grills. I am guessing here that it’s a common thing with all metal fan grills, and not a knock on quality toward this specific brand or model.
I just wish it was available in Black color. It says it has the color on this page on the last photo to scroll through up top. Although White color looked clean, and I wanted to try this brand for a change. I guess I am used to darker colored fans, so the White color stood out to me too much. It looks great, make no mistake, but that was how I felt.
This would be the near perfect fan (for the price) if it had:
- a longer cord (2-ft longer at least)
- no button beeps (or ability to turn the beeps off)
- a five blade design instead of the common three
- a 5-speed selection where the lowest speed wouldn’t be quite as loud
- a less heavy ground base that still provided good support so not to feel cheap or fall over
- a less flimsy remote holder design choice
- the Black color available as well!!!
(Updated/Edited on Sept 5th 2022.)
NOTE: This fan has held up really well in a near 90°F room during the summer in Southern California as a heat dome boils the area. This fan is an awesome alternative to using AC all the time, as well as being a great help to cooling down/airing out the 85-90°F room I sleep in before getting to bed later at night. It has been on maybe 20 hrs of the day if I am there and has held up wonderfully. It’s still pretty new, so I don’t expect it to break yet, but thank you Hurricane for this great fan for the summer months!)

When it comes to Noise I'm not so much. That's the apparent tradeoff for moving a lot of air. The Hurricane on its lowest setting makes quite a bit more noise than my older fan on high. It's too noisy for me in a bedroom fan but that depends on how much noise you can tolerate.
I think it's important to point out that the noise seems to come entirely from the fan blades through air. My old fan was almost silent for this kind of noise, but vibrated quite a bit. That noise carried through the walls and I could hear it running in other rooms. Not so with the well balanced Hurricane. It seems noisy but just in the room where it's running.
The Hurricane was surprisingly smaller than the old metal frame one it replaces. Both are described as 20in fans but with the Hurricane it appears to refer to the outer box dimensions. On my older fan it refers to the blade diameter. The Hurricane is also very thin: about half the thickness of my old fan. That's a real plus when you are placing a fan on your window sill!
The Hurricane's box is almost all plastic with some metal reinforcing. So are the sleekly curve blades. It sounds cheaply made to describe, but I was impressed with the quality of construction. It also does not seem to vibrate noticeably when it's running. I think it will last very well. Good engineering I think.
In my application I am using it in a upstairs windows to pull air through the one room upstairs in my old New England cape style home. Essentially as an exhaust fan. I used some eye hooks and a bungee cord to hold it tightly in window. With the fan on low I can be in the middle of the room and feel the air flow distinctly. When it comes to moving air I'm very impressed. Noise level, not as much.
In conclusion, this box fan moves more air than any other I looked at locally. On low it moves much more than my old fan on high! But it's noisy for a bedroom or living space. Even when on low. Construction is very good and I think it will last years if not decades. It's much more compact than other box fans I looked at. I
I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars. No half stars on Amazon so I'm giving it 4 stars. It's an impressive box fan but even on its lowest setting it's is pretty noisy.
UPDATE 9-Aug-2018:
This fan has continued to exceed my expectations. It really moves a lot of air. I rarely want to use it above the low settings, but when I do it delivers moving air thought my attic bedroom and cooling it down from the day's heat (this is an attic room!). Yes, it is noisier than my previous fan. It took a little while but I'm used to it now and no longer concerns me, at least on low.
Considering how much air this fan moves I have reconsidered the noise level and I'm not upgrading my Hurricane box fan to 5 stars. I'm even more pleased than when I wrote the original review and raising my ranking to 5 stars. It's an impressive fan.

I taped 4x MERV 13 Furnace Filters, 20x20x1, to this thing, and a piece of cardboard for the side I typically set it on to rest, and it worked wonders. This is known as a Corsi-Rosenthal box if you want to look it up.
We actually bought a Mila, which is a smart home filter, and this at the same time. My room mate used the Mila and I used this box fan setup. It filtered more air, faster, and efficiently than the $500 smart fan filter setup.
Routinely, we found their room smelled like smoke, and mine smelled fresh and smoke free.
Another thing of note is this fan is on for at least 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it hasn't started squeaking, rattling, or vibrating in an undesirable way after 3 months. The Mila on the other hand has a squeaky fan already.
Something of note is, even on the lowest setting (1 our of 3) it is very loud but also pushes a lot of air, on the highest setting (3 out of 3) do not expect to hear anything but the fan if you are anywhere near it. The only thing that will overcome the noise of the fan is a loud movie, ads on tv, or a fire alarm. However, for the amount of air it moves, I don't know how it could be any quieter than it is, this thing is a beast.
