Pros
1) Short throw - 100" from 3.5 feet away. This is a huge plus for me since I have it in a smaller room.
2) Turns on quickly - Usually gets to full brightness from a cold startup in about 20 seconds.
3) Turns off quickly - I have used it for up to 5 hours in one sitting and the fan still shut off in 10-15 seconds after powering down.
4) Very good picture - At 100" everything looks great when watching HD content.
5) No rainbow effect - I've read others that say they see this but I've yet to notice it even once.
6) Very very quiet fan - I can't hear the fan at all. I sit about 5 feet behind projector. Only way I ever hear it is to mute the volume.
7) Internal speaker - It's honestly not bad if you had to use it. I would never use it to watch movies, but it would be good for presentations. However, I use my own surround sound system.
8) Gaming - I like to play MLB The Show a lot and pitching/batting requires pretty low latency to be effective. The latency truly is pretty low and I'm able to time my pitches/swings really well with this projector.
9) Picture quality - Looks better to me than my previous 70inch LED tv. The colors are amazing. Black levels are also very good.
Cons
1) No zoom - Okay, to me this is not really a con but to others it might be. If you are going to mount the projector you must get it mounted the perfect distance away from your screen. Too close and the image will be too small, too far and it will be too big. The only way to adjust image size if by moving the projector closer or further form the screen.
2) Audio out - Again, not a true con to me but the audio out is only stereo. If you want surround sound you have to strip the sound from the video source before it reaches projector. My surround sound system is capable of this, so again, no issue for me. The biggest issue I see here is if you plugged a device such as a chromecast directly into the HDMI ports on the projector itself you would not be able to get surround sound.
----------------
Overall I am very impressed with this projector.
Once set up, the picture was big, bright, and sharp. In bright daylight, it's a tad on the dim side, but in a slightly or completely darkened room, I'd say it rivals any modern 1080p television in picture quality. My wife was sufficiently wowed, and immediately preferred watching TV and movies in the "projector room" as opposed to the main living room. It really is a game changer - perfect for viewing parties with groups, amazing with video games. Fan noise can be a slight distraction, especially if you have Dynamic Black mode on, which adjusts bulb brightness in real time and thus, the fan gets louder and quieter with it. Cranking up the volume alleviates that problem.
Speaking of sound, if you're using this for media, external speakers are a requirement. At max volume the built in speakers are still quiet, and low quality. That's typical for projectors, just something to keep in mind if you're pricing things out. I have it hooked up to a home theater system via HDMI.
And now, some notes about the setup. As stated this was my first projector, and I learned several things by trial and error:
Number one - positioning is extremely important if you are using a screen. If mounting on a ceiling like I did, it will take some experimentation. The distance from lens to screen is the sole factor to determine your image size. The projector has an image shift feature that lets you tweak the image up, down, left, and right by a few inches, plus a zoom and an edge mask adjustment, but none of these can physically change where the projector is casting its light. For example, if you find that the image isn't quite reaching the right edge of your screen, adjusting the image shift to the right only moves it in from the LEFT side, cutting off picture on the right. If you want the image to be straight and square and fill the whole screen without spilling over, the mounting position needs to be just so, the correct distance from the screen with the lens directly in the center (horizontally centered, not vertically).
Fortunately, the universal mount I purchased allows me to move the bracket around as it's attached to the projector, without needing to move the mounting hardware that's screwed into the ceiling. Doing some calculations with the .49 throw ratio is a good place to start when determining distance. From there, I had to make a few attempts at positioning the bracket just right to get the image centered exactly to the borders of my screen.
One suggestion if you find yourself doing what I did: use a home theater test pattern, not the projector's built in grid. When the grid is enabled, the only adjustment you can do is keystone (vertical tilt). I just used a test pattern on a Disney blu-ray to do this.
Finally, a note on screens. I am using an 80" manual retractable screen, which the manufacturer recommends NOT using with short throw projectors because slight screen waves cause image distortion. Unfortunately the retractable screen was a condition of my installation of a projector, so that the room didn't have to become a "TV room" permanently. Sure enough, there is a slight ripple on the lower right corner of my screen that causes very slight distortion that's only really noticeable when the image pans side to side. I can live with it, but if you're a stickler, you will want to use a static mounted screen, or no screen at all.
Top reviews from other countries
Minor light leakage at the top (ceiling mount -unit upside down), as my unit is near a bulkhead where the image is beneath it I have minor light leakage on the vertical section of the bulkhead. Very minor not something that lessens the experience.
Boarder around the picture - very dull but noticeable boarder around the picture which is a known downfall of DLP, but again nothing that ruins the experience and correctable with a black felt boarder.
Fan Noise- Bright mode (standard) the fan ramps up a bit more and can be heard when nothing is being watched or played. I’m in Eco mode with brightness up a bit and it’s pretty quiet. My seating is about 10’ behind the projector, I hear a very minor hum while nothing is playing.
Sound - you need an external sound setup, that’s a given.
Ports - I’m using one HDMI port with a switcher for other devices. Has
2 HDMI ports and powered USB which I haven’t used.
Picture Adjustments - keystone, horizontal and vertical and focus all very helpful on getting this setup.
Blacks - again on a light grey Behr matte wall, the blacks are black and the colours are stunning.
Over all I’m very satisfied with this projector and will defiantly recommend to a gamer and movie watcher you won’t regret this purchase.
