Product Description

An Ancient Formula

Used for centuries, this simple teeth cleaning recipe has stood the test of time in many cultures. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Native Americans depended on charcoal and ash to obtain dazzling smiles back when a white, shimmering smile was a mark of beauty. The whitening power from Peasant Co delivers out of this world results. You’ll wonder why we ever diverted from ancient ways.

CHARCOAL

Did you know you'll find activated charcoal in water filters and traditionally hospitals and poison control centers use it to treat accidental poisoning or a drug overdose. We use charcoal as our main whitening ingredient because it's a highly absorbent porous substance that binds to things like tannins left from coffee, wine, etc that stain teeth and leave them yellow or brown.

What is “activated” charcoal mean? Activated means it is purified or refined. Coconut shells are heated to create a char. This char is then "activated" in a furnace at high temperatures of 1,700° to 1,800°F with steam.

CLAY

Clay is imporatnt because it’s full of minerals like calcium, magnesium and silica which are nourishing for the teeth. Like activated charcoal, bentonite clay can be taken internally to help with toxin removal so it’s safe for use in the mouth.

Clay is alkaline. My charcoal and clay blend can actually be helpful in changing the pH and health of the mouth, and as such is effective in avoiding cavities and gingivitis.

How Does This Work?

Activated charcoal removes plaque, toxins that cause bad breath, and teeth stains through a process called adsorption where these unwanted elements adhere to the porous surface of the charcoal. Unlike the bricks you use for your backyard barbecue, activated charcoal’s enormous surface area is dotted with the numerous nooks and crannies that draw in and trap toxic substances in your gut like a sponge, preventing them from being absorbed by the body.

Does it work for everyone?
Your teeth may become discolored due to a variety of factors from poor dental hygiene to the food you eat to just getting older. Activated charcoal is shown to be attracted to a group of compounds known as tannins. Tannins can be found in common stain inducing items like wine, blueberries, cigarette smoke or coffee, for instance. Those are the types of stains if you brush with charcoal, you can clean off.

Our ingredients are edible. Since chemicals can easily absorb through the sensitive skin in the mouth, we use ingredients that are safe enough to eat. But don't. It's best to spit out the bacteria and plaque you brushed away.

Safer than Charcoal Powders. Unlike abrasive charcoal teeth powders that could possibly remove enamel from teeth, the Peasasnt Co blend makes application safer by reducing the abrasiveness:

  • We use a grit-free, ultra fine granular charcoal in our formula that is food grade and gentle on the enamel.
  • Most importantly we add coconut oil. The reason coconut oil helps whiten teeth is similar to what oil is doing in your car’s engine. In addition to acting as a carrier oil, it's a natural lubricant that will ease the abrasiveness of charcoal.

Our Story

I created this product after a friend of mine, a Native American woman, told me one day how her teeth became and stayed so white. She told me accounts of when she was a little girl growing up, her father used to burn plant matter and after the plant burned to black ashes or became charred, the father would take the ash residue and give it to his family. They would take a little on their finger and brush it against their teeth. This intrigued me because many years ago in my native Philippines I was also raised with charcoal for my everyday brushing! Our cultures were a world apart and we were both raised without fluoride or any dental care but we were still able to keep our teeth clean, healthy and shinning white using the same natural ingredients.

I grew up poor and didn’t have access to modern dental care or chemicals for cleaning and whitening. My family simply turned to natural ingredients we had around us like charcoal, bentonite clay (volcanic ash) and coconut oil to keep our smiles pearly white. In fact before the invention of modern toothpaste in 1890 most all of our ancestors used a similar recipe. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Native Americans depended on charcoal, clay and sometimes coconut oil. The exact recipe would have depended on what was available in their environment. And even today no chemical teeth whitening solution or product on the market comes close to the whitening and brightening action of charcoal, clay and coconut oil. It might make you wonder why we ever diverted from ancient ways.

WOW! I was skeptical about this whole charcoal craze, but I gave it a shot anyway. I've tried every whitening product out there from strips to trays to professional whitening at the dentist. I can't speak for you but I know my teeth were badly stained from years of coffee, smoking, and red wine, and this is the only product I've seen results with so quickly. This worked like a magic eraser. See attached pictures of the 1st use.To be fair, i have not tried any other charcoal products for teeth whitening as a comparison. I chose this product because it is less abrasive to the enamel vs. other products.Update: I've been using this consistently (2-3x a week) for a month and have not experienced any sensitivity to it! This is a big deal as most whitening products hurt really bad after just a few uses. I haven't seen as dramatic of whitening as i did the first time, but maybe I'm just used to having whiter teeth now! I'll keep it at 5 stars. Oh, and make sure to rinse your sink immediately after use as it takes some elbow grease to get it out if the stain sets.

I purchased the Turmeric, Clay and Charcoal varieties to try them all out. The clay is interesting but doesn’t seem any more effective than supermarket toothpaste. The charcoal is FANTASTIC! It made my teeth visibly whiter in a single use. The Tumeric is gross. It is runny, tastes horrible and made my teeth look worse than before I brushed so it went into the trash. If you can only buy one of these definitely buy the CHARCOAL!

This might be slightly too charcoaly for me personally, but if that's what you're going for then this is a great product. I bought this after I ran out of Fine Vine charcoal coconut oil, and this is definitely next level charcoal. I haven't totally gotten used to the gritty dirt-like texture, but I'm sure I will eventually. Also this is obviously messier than your regular old toothpaste, but not super hard to clean up. This stuff has good results though. My teeth are brighter and whiter after using, and I love that the aftertaste doesn't linger and really does make your breath truly fresh (not just minty) all day. I do only use this in the morning, and then before bed I alternate to Sensodyne Pro-Namel to help balance out.

The good news was: this product worked! I used Peasant Charcoal toothpaste once daily for 1.5 weeks. My teeth were definitely whiter and so clean, right off the bat. I found it best to use in the shower with a manual toothbrush, then follow up with my Sonicare and Sensodyne toothpaste afterward, as it can leave a black tinge on the tongue and small flecks of charcoal around the gumline.

The bad news is: my gums and teeth grew more and more sensitive as the days went by. I brushed gingerly with a soft bristle toothbrush and used a very gentle, circular motion (ie, I did not scrub) and I floss nightly, but two days ago my gums - including the top of my mouth behind the front teeth - developed painful sores and I have to admit defeat.

The only new product I was using was this toothpaste. In hindsight, I should have done more research before I jumped on the charcoal bandwagon, and I definitely should not have launched into daily use without testing first.

Bottom line: if you have sensitive teeth and/or allergies (I have both) you might want to proceed with caution.

1st I wanna say that this is difficult to squeeze out of the bottle. The smell is overwhelming smelling like dog poo and even looking like it.... Of course the taste is pretty bad it's like using a hand scrub for your teeth. A very gritty feeling. The toothpaste stains and if you don't close your mouth it flicks out everywhere. I wouldn't say it helps with Gingervitis but it does seem to get your teeth cleaned. If you're very sensitive to taste I would not recommend this as it's very difficult for me to use with how bad it taste and smells.

The toothpaste looks awful...LOL But turmeric has that color, so what are you going to do? I had a small abscess that wasn't painful, but bothersome, and I didn't want it to get any bigger or painful. I hate going to the dentist. I read about the benefits of this toothpaste. After brushing with it twice a day, after 2 days, the abscess was gone. I now bush with this once at night and use my charcoal toothpaste for the day. Just be careful, because it will stain clothing. Rinse your mouth well, or you will have some yellowing of the tongue and teeth for at least an hour. I keep "brush rinsing", until I see the yellow go away. Very good stuff!

Taste was strange, like minty turmeric, and it definitely stains if one isn’t careful. The toothpaste seemed to improve the overall health of my gums and teeth over 6-7 weeks BUT I no longer trust the product safety because of two problems: bulging tubes and the product has developed a strange streaky black color. I initially purchased three turmeric toothpastes on 1/19 and had to return them as all three tubes were bulging to the point of their sealed caps leaking from the pressure in the tubes. I was pleased with the replacements I received 1/25 until the product began turning black inside the tubes with an spoiled odor. I’ve contacted the company and am quite disappointed in their lack of response. Is this a typical experience?
