In case it isn't obvious, for backups it is FAR safer to use a networked drive solution like this one than to simply plug an external USB drive into your computer. A computer malfunction could easily trash the contents of an external drive since the computer directly controls the access to the drive, but with a NAS you have a separate computer (in the NAS) that manages the drive(s). And, of course, the NAS can easily create a RAID array if you want more than a simple copy as a backup.
Very Poor mechanical disk tray design: I have had to buy 8 new replacement trays as the plastic tray latch mechanisms won’t latch closed. (I have read other similar complaints.). No dust filter like my other NAS!: The tray fronts and disks collect lots of dust as it does not have a dust filter designed into it as an integral part of the product.
There's still a lot of features I've yet to try out as I've been going through and organizing 16TB of backups onto this, but it has handled all the crazy data being thrown at it with no problems! There are seriously so many things you can do with this, it is impressive. There is also a huge online following with a lot of How to videos which has been very helpful. great purchase and I have a lot more confidence in my backup system now!
For YEARS, I’ve looked at both the Synology & the QNAP, and after a recent “disaster” I decided to buy this product (a few YouTube videos/reviews also helped as well).
Let me go though my [usual] review, where I list The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of my experiences (and, of this product).
My disaster came with a huge thud, when my beloved Drobo 5D started giving me WEIRD drive errors, where my digital “life” came into peril. This was not the usual “red light/green light” error (as the Drobo Dashboard would usually confer) — No, no, instead, it kept giving me strange symptoms where it wouldn’t mount, and the usual Disk Utility wouldn’t find (or fix) disk errors (and even the vaunted Disk Warrior could not fix this degrading condition). And Drobo Tech Support, as many Drobo owners will attest, wouldn’t give a DAMN, if you’re over a year owner.
So, after much reading and review videos I went with this DS1817+.
Pre-sales emails went pretty good (Lars C was GREAT!), but "direct" (phone calls, via a person) was absolutely ATROCIOUS!! — it seems like the many millennial Young Men at the Synology company are absolute IDIOTS to there own products!!
Here is an example:
One ☝️ of my questions was, “Can you connect a drive to the DS1817+ via USB3, with the Apple format (HFS+) for data transfer?” — the answer? — Absolutely NOT!!😲
And yet, after a little simple research, I did indeed find info, that you should indeed be able to connect a HFS+ formatted drive to the USB back ports (I mean, how in the HECK does one believe you can transfer your data, if it doesn’t allow standard formats to connect to this NAS?!?)
Manufacturers Note/Suggestion - Synology Corporate: PLEASE consider hiring some Apple Customer Service Managers. Apple is KNOWN for [mostly] superior customer service. And MANY post [here] complain [rightly] about this one thing (and blemish) you guys have. A good Customer & Tech Services Managers (and LOTS of training) would really help you guys to take it "To The NEXT Level." -- Right now it's just plain SUB-STANDARD!! (again, on the PHONE side - the email side being better).
Back to the Product Review:
Then there is the fact that this NAS takes FOREVER to add (and format) new drives!!!
This isn’t so much a “negative” as much as it is an absolute FACT!! — Everyone reading this should know, that EACH drive will add another 24 to 48 hours of processing (for EACH event). So if you have 8 drive slot (like with the1817+) then it will take you EIGHT DAYS (minimum) just to FORMAT/add the drives (onTOP of the time it will take to transfer your data) — 😲 🤯😳
And then (PLEASE TAKE NOTE), if you add drives, you should take serious NOTE of the SIZE of drive you add FIRST (NO WHERE is this important fact mentioned). They do tell you that you should add your drives [first] from left, to right, as far as the “direction” goes — But the drive SIZE is also important (which you would THINK would be WARNED about, when you use their sites “Drive Calculator”).
As an example, when I started adding drives I started using their SHR1 RAID, and began with a 8TB He8 HSGT drive. After that, I added ANOTHER He8 drive, because the SHR does say it NEEDs another similar [or larger] size, for redundancy (and/or RAID “protection”)
After the two 8TB drives, I THEN attempted to add a smaller [2TB WD] drive. It was only then that the DSM (management) software didn’t even GIVE me the option to add this drive!!😳😰 — Why?!?, because I found out (after the fact) that you can ONLY add extra drives that are now BIGGER than 8TB!!!!!!!......😱🤯
NO ONE told me this!!!
In fact, Synology only ADVERTISES (in ALL/most their ad material) how “Flexible” their SHR formatting is (like Drobo, they infer) — that you’re virtually/literally able to add ANY type/size drives you wish!!!
NOTE/ALERT - THIS FACT IS NOT TRUE!!!
So BE WARNED everyone out there! Add your SMALLER drives FIRST — otherwise, you will be FORCED to add bigger drives (all the way through the rest of the slots) — to me, this is almost as bad as regular RAID 5/6, where you MUST have all your drives, the same. -- (Not the SAME, but ALMOST as bad 😉)
And not even CLOSE to the Drobos Flexibility (I must admit), as they [Drobo] do indeed allow almost ANY drive size, type, and order you'd like.
My only other pains (so far) is that SMB (Samba) not initially working. But, after some basic troubleshooting, I found that my network “switch” was not letting the SMB signal through — simple fix, just connected [directly] to another port to the back of my Nighthawk router.
STILL am not able to get NFS to work (???) - will need to troubleshoot this more (no Biggie 😉) - SMB is my main thing anyway👍🏼
😃GOOD STUFF:
I AM happy to report that I was able to get the Ethernet (two port/Bonding) Aggregation to work PERFECTLY with the R8500 Nighthawk - SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!........😂👍🏼🎉
So overall, I am VERY happy with the speed aspect!! (and the “option” of doing 10G networking, in the future, if needed [with the PCI slot available] — DOUBLE sweet!!! 😉😃👍🏼).
I did ask of the phone rep if one could add a USB3/Thunderbolt network card to the PCI slot — the answer? - NO!!.... 😰😔
Overall (and my entire sum of the matter), I AM happy 😃 so far with this product (about 80%)
It is WAY better than the Drobo EVER was, and the data transfer (so far, about 70% complete) is going very smoothly (THANK GOD!!!😜🎉👍🏼)
I thought that USB3 to/through Ethernet (1G) would be slow?!? (But it is/was NOT!! - Surprisingly 😳🤯)
This was, of course, my biggest worry.
So since I can no longer use my other [smaller] drives from my Drobo, I guess I'll just make it my Apple Time Machine backup drive.
So I hope my review will help-out any other person out there (so that you won't have to go through the same ”PAIN/PAINS” that I did).
LAST POINT - A VERY GOOD PRODUCT (With a few minor [workable] negatives 🤔).
Yes (as most have mentioned), it is VERY expensive, but it is entirely WORTH it!!!!
I now have my own “personal” High-Powered Netflix and iCloud 😁😆😃😁😆😃😆👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🎉

Software is very intuitive and stable. 8 Bay is good for future proofing.
Better than the DS1815+ (which I also own).
This is the iPhone of SOHO storage devices.
I have been a customer of Synology for years and these give best value for money with tons of functionality beyond simply being a big disk.
Be aware that the cost is not the NAS itself but the cost of the disks to put in it so factor that in.
Also recommend a UPS because if your power goes down it will spend two days parity checking the disk set (you can still use it in that time).
Never-the-less if you're not a fan of giving someone else your data (i.e. the cloud) and want to maintain control of your data this is best cost option for a SOHO environment.
The DS1817+ just works, is already doing more that it was purchased for.
