I knew I wanted an Intel processor but nothing slow like the old Celeron. Windows would greatly slow down with it, if not freeze. I didn't need anything fancy or super fast since I am not a gamer. I just needed a laptop that provided decent speed and processing for those puzzle games, to browse, for basic photo editing, interacting on social media, and to watch movies & tv. This one fit the bill.
At under $400 and with a touchscreen which I never had before, I found it perfect!
The laptop isn't sleek-looking like Mac but that didn't matter to me. I could care less what people thought about my "tech style". If the laptop works, then that is good enough for me.
First, the basics. This comes with an optical drive. For some, that may be old fashioned since a thinner and lighter laptop is preferred and a cd/dvd rw just makes it bulky. I remember when the first laptops came out with absolutely nothing, not even a zip-drive! Those were bulky and heavy! This laptop isn't heavy or bulky. I found it about the same weight or maybe slightly lighter than my dead Macbook from 2010. This one is much larger due to its widescreen but other than that, I won't break a sweat carrying it.
The touchscreen is a nice addition. I never had one in a laptop until now. I was worried about smudgy fingerprints but this laptop appears to be fingerprint proof or makes it less annoying than you would see on tablets. You don't have to press the screen hard but it isn't too sensitive either. Just enough to let you push to know you are executing onto the right area.
What it doesn't have is a backlit keyboard. I am not bothered by this. I never had one and when I type in the dark, I know if my typing is off when I see a garbled mess on screen. I just place my fingers back on the right letters and continue typing.
Windows 10--This comes with the 64bit Home edition. It took a good 2 to three hours to update so don't expect to use this right out of the box. You might have moments where you think something may be wrong with your laptop but nothing is, it is just the slow process of updating Windows. After the update and the usual bit of registering, you will probably spend the rest of the day uninstalling bloatware.
This comes with a lot of bloatware! The last time I used Windows was in the Vista phase. Yes, that came with bloatware but not as much as this one! I don't need Xbox, I don't need Candy Crush or a 30-day trial with McAffee. I also noticed ads would pop-up on cellular plans and no wonder since the offers come installed. Other ads would appear in notifications. All that is very annoying. Some are easily uninstalled via the Control Panel but others have to be uninstalled via the terminal window. You have to be very careful with that so you don't uninstall or corrupt Windows.
After removing all the unnecessary programs, Windows 10 still slowed down the laptop. It takes a good 3 to 4 minutes to restart and to log on. Using the installed programs like Media player with another program like some photo editing will slow it down and freeze it because in the background, Windows is updating something because it is vulnerable to some virus. Yet, I need windows for Itunes. I don't browse the web with Windows, therefore I use a free version of a virus scanner.
This laptop with Windows 10 gets a 3 out of 5 stars. BUT...
I installed Ubuntu 16.04. It is like day and night on this laptop. This is the main reason why I chose Dell. Dell makes Linux laptops and I knew it would be compatible. The Intel chip makes Linux easy to install. I have a computer with an AMD processor and Linux was a bit hard to install and some programs became glitchy.
I did install via the optical drive. Again, old-fashioned but I didn't have a USB stick. Installation was painless, Dell makes it easy, Linux has become easier too!
This laptop is FAST with Linux!!! I am logged onto my laptop in less than a minute. My programs pop up quickly. I can use multiple programs; I listen to music while editing photos and browsing the web. No problems in freezing up or slowing it down. Updates are quick.
With Linux, this laptop is well worth 5 out of 5 stars!!!
Just to add, I noticed my cursor would skip around and delete what I typed. This I found annoying especially when trying to insert passwords. I actually got locked out of one website for trying so many times. I found it had to do with the touchpad/trackpad. Typing would somehow make the touchpad think you are TAPPING it, making it skip all around the place. What you need to do is go into Settings>Touchpad and uncheck "Tap with Single Finger to Single Click". This should resolve the sensitivity of the touchpad. You will have to push the touchpad down to "click" but that is a minor annoyance.
I find this laptop well worth the money, if not a bargain. If you are looking for a fast laptop don't use this with Windows, use it with Linux!
Just a note, I am not a computer savvy person.
