REAL WORLD SETUP/USE
1. Have two monitors hooked up with the VGA (1280 x 1024) and HDMI (1440 x 900) connections. Works great.
2. No adware or a long process for setup. Turn it on and answer some basic Windows setup questions and it's done.
3. Wireless works great. Found all the Network Attached Storage devices and I was able to stream a Blu-ray film along with Stephen Colbert on Youtube at the same time. No issues and also had another web browser with 2 tabs open, and MS word running as well.
4. Remote Desktop/wireless sessions also work great so far.
5. New installs with Office Enterprise, iTunes, etc. Like that the hard drive is 7200 RPM and is 1TB.
GENERAL THOUGHTS
I was going to build a new box for a family member but decided to go this route instead as the processor can be upgraded and is the latest 7th gen, has 8G of ram already and can also be upgraded, 1TB of hard drive space, and also has built in wireless and bluetooth - which was important as the room it is in is not cabled up at this point (but nice to know it supports Gigabit when able for wired connections).
When I compare it to one of my /custom builds setups (5 monitors, un-clocked core i7, SSD, separate graphics card, 16G ram) and what I do on it ---- for someone who doesn't need 4-8 monitors, doesn't do heavy software development/compiling, heavy video editing, or heavy gaming - but still needs a decent amount of power to do things - this Acer Desktop can't be beat from an off the shelf perspective - and like other things that I think are a great value - I'll be recommending this deal on to my friends who might be looking for a new computer for the type of use above.
TIME
I've had this running for a little over 2 days now. No issues and they love this computer. Typically when I see things fail, they fail almost right out of the box. I will update this review in a few months - but I have a feeling this will be running good for quite some time.
Pros:
Solid performance
Good port selection
Fairly expandable
Linux compatible
M.2 port
Little bloatware
Large power supply (for a pre-built)
Good wifi performance
Cons:
M.2 port is only SATA3 (not PCIE) and doesn't have mounting screw
Only two SATA ports on mobo
I started to outgrow the machine when I got into gaming. League was depressing and the second I got into RPG games (single-player is a gift when you've only ever played a game like League lmao). To my surprise this machine runs games like Skyrim and Bioshock pretty dang well. Sure, you need to put it on the lower graphics settings (the integrated graphics on this machine are... not stellar? but they work!!), but still. Of course games like Stardew Valley, and Sims 4 ran well, and even online games like Elder Scrolls Online, Overwatch, Human Fall Flat, and Apex Legends ran just fine. It's when you get tired of low graphics settings, or interested in games like Witcher 3 (or wanting to run massive mods like Enderal on Skyrim) that you run into issues. For some reason the case made trying to upgrade the system next to impossible. I'm a PC-building newbie but even my friend who has built a few PCs got frustrated with trying to figure out how to fit a graphics card into the case. We couldn't even move the components into a new case because the power supply doesn't seem to be removable.
I never needed to contact support or try to solve for some of the issues other reviews have mentioned.
In the end, I'm retiring this PC and building an entirely new one to support my new gaming habit and whatever else I decide I want to do in the next few years. I'll probably pass this one on to my family, who definitely won't use it for anything more complex than word processing and streaming Youtube or Netflix.
Bottom line is, this is worth it if you're looking for a "first" PC, don't want to build one, and don't want to drop a huge wad of cash. Light gaming, streaming, internet use, etc. will probably be just fine. If you want to do any upgrades, be sure to take a good look inside the case and figure out what you'll need to do to get a component in before you buy any.
