I purchased this not for a home theatre room, but for a projector that could be portable for outdoor movies. I also didn't want to spend a lot of money as I didn't need 4k or anything like that. Make sure to change the default picture from presentation to cinema mode for movies.Cons:Rainbow Effect - I did notice rainbow effect for some movies while others were just fine. I need to do some more investigation here. Not a huge mark down however as i only noticed it with one movie (Rogue One via Amazon Fire Stick)Audio - The native speaker is only 2 wats so obviously not nearly strong enough for any setting really, but what disapointed me was when trying to take audio out from the projector to an external speaker via 3.5m or A/V the power was significantly reduced as to what volume I could acheive. It tried to take audio out to a sound bar, and a few other external speakers to no avail. In order to get a strong audio here you must do one of the 2 options AFAIK: 1 - take the sound out to an amplified source like a guitar amp, or 2 - take the hdmi signal to a receiver or HDMI splitter with audio extractor first so that the audio never goes into the projector itself, only the external speaker. This way you bypass the audio limitations of the projector. I suspect most people looking for a permanent solution do this already, just know its not a simple audio out solution so you will need to invest in more things for a good experience.TL;DR - Good projector for the price, very sharp and bright for projector range, be prepared to solve the audio problem with external hardware, as well as an occasional rainbow effect with the DLP

5.0 out of 5 stars Best 1080p starter projector out there.
Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2019
This product just arrived. Easy to mount on my mount. I am replacing another BenQ TH670 which lasted three years before the ballast died. But I think this is due to being subjected to high temperatures. This is a great replacement. The 1080p native resolution is great for my uses. It’s nice and bright on my wall with the curtains closed and even with a bit of ambient light from a skylight has a good bright picture. Possibly brighter than my last model. Time will tell how well this projector lasts but it’s looking good out of the box. Fairly quiet on Eco mode as well. For the reviewer complaining about the low volume, the projector comes out of the box on a medium volume setting. Turn up the projector volume for best results and then the speaker volume for whatever speaker you have. I had no issues with the volume. The sound quality if quite good.

Nice sharp glass optics, and real 1920x1080 resolution. No USB, no way to power a Chromecast or Firestick.

I am using this projector to set up a mini home theater in my office/study/guest-room. The projector is currently resting upside-down on a high shelf, projecting a 100" diagonal image to a rigid screen temporarily rigged from 1/8" white hardboard.

The projector controls are only slightly clunky, and have extensive options for tweaking the image and other settings. Quite easy to figure it all out. Pity the remote control isn't backlit, but it works very well, and is mostly only used for turning the projector on/off.

Picture quality is excellent! Under anything but the brightest conditions, it rivals a big LCD TV. Except it doesn't take up the same permanent space that a big TV would. So huge win there.

The fan noise is louder than expected. Everyone says "whisper quiet", but that's not really true. It's more like a Very Loud whisper, or a loud computer fan from 10 years ago, or a quite loud home forced-air heating system. The fan is variable speed, driven by temperature. The freer/cooler the airflow, the quieter the fan. Noise perception does vary depending on which side of the projector one is nearest: the side furthest from the projector lens is the loudest. All of that said, once a movie is playing with sound through my 5.1 speakers, the fan is quickly forgotten. But it is there.

The included power cord is short. No HDMI cable in the package, but instead they include a VGA cable {!?!?) for those who just HAVE to use modern tech with 20-year old computers. :) No USB or USB-power ports on the the projector, and no 12V accessory power either: so don't plan to use this to drive any other home theater automation. This projector also lacks automatic "power on signal" for HDMI connections, though it does have it for the VGA inputs.

The built-in single speaker is useless, and while there is a 3.5mm stereo audio output, there is no digital passthrough or SPDIF/TosLink output, so the sound has to be split away from the HDMI at the source or with an HDMI splitter. No problem for us here, as our PVR has optical out for sound.

The first attached photo shows it in a bright, partially sunlit room, with a sliver of direct sunlight on the screen.

I have tried this projector side-by-side with the similarly spec'd Optoma HD27: similar fan noise levels, similar brightness, but the Optoma remote control is horrible in every way, and that projector emits a constant high frequency whine that drove me to return it to the store after less than 10 minutes of use.

I also compared it to the incredibly cheap and feature-filled, but also very dim (200 ANSI lumens), ABOX A6, and the BenQ is obviously a LOT LOT LOT brighter, and about half the noise level of the ABOX A6.

4 stars (docked one for the noise and lack of USB). I paid CAD$580.
