The bag in and of itself is very high quality. Good straps and supportive chest and waist straps. It has a whistle on the chest strap, which is something I look for in any outdoor/recreational backpack. Distributes weight well and I’d easily pay $50 for the pack alone. We are going to take out bug out bags camping this summer to do a light trial to see what else we need to round it out. This kit would be perfect for backpacking too.
The bottom compartment zipper inside the bag came a little janky. Doesn’t affect the functionality of the bag so I’m gonna leave it as is. I could sew it back but it isn’t necessary. There’s also an outside pocket on the bottom so you can access the bottom compartment easily anyway. The organization is very intuitive and helpful. I’m not the most organized person, but the backpack makes it easy. It would be easy to pack it in and pack it out with little notice
The included meals are crowd favorites. I added some of my own favorite mountain house meals. I guess I could add subsistence blocks as back up, but I’m happier to have tastier options. This pack covers myself and my kiddo. We are going to figure out her bug out bag situation as well, in the event, that god forbid, we get separated. There’s enough in this pack to mostly split down the middle.
Here is a list of items I used from the kit:
Fire starter
Mylar Blanket
Emergency Drinking Water
Camp pot
Flashlights
Backpacking food
Handy Bath Bath wipes
One other item I used was a camp stove with an isobutane fuel cartridge which I would recommend adding to the kit. I would also recommend having more water. I ran out Friday just as my water pressure came back on. Luckily my water and electricity is back, but I am under a boil water notice.
I used the fire stater to light found wood to aid my neighbor in cooking her food that was about to turn because my fuel stove would not have been enough for both of us. The fire starter was very good and had no problems lighting right up. I used finger size branches and kindling found along the south wall of my complex. I found that wood located on the south side of buildings and walls were dry. My theory is that the precipitation was coming from the north and the buildings kept the wood from getting wet.
The handy bath was an unexpected luxury and helped keep me sane. Another item not included was an AM/FM/Weather band radio. It had solar, and hand crank charging capabilities in addition to a usb port for charging my phone. Having access to the news and a little music offered comfort and information from city and state officials. It also made my neighbors jealous.
Since I was in my home, I did not need the knife and I had lighters so the ferro rod wasn't necessary. I also had candles which offered a soft consistent light. I would recommend adding some to this kit.
The items for the most part are very good. This kit is good as a starter 72 hour bag, or for someone who doesn't want to take the time to custom make a pack. This pack should get you by for 3 or 4 days just fine.
My complaint (bearing in mind that it was "used") is:
1. One of the Aqua Literz water boxes had a very small leak. The second liter was fine.
2. I didn't find a flashlight in this kit. Then it occurred to me that I originally looked at this kit on Youtube which was apparently the old version of the kit. So beware. This kit is a "current" version that is on the Sustain.com website - so it doesn't have a flashlight. Another difference from the old version: it had Mountain House meals. The current version I bought has ReadyWise meals. I swapped out the food anyway for some Datrex bars and vacuum packed jerky anyway. I've gone 3 days without food, and once, 5 days. So for me, water, vitamins and electrolytes are more important to have in my pack. I've got plenty of stored calories on my body for 3 days (LOL).
The backpack seems decent and had a lot of space for additional gear. I added a few items to improve the kit for my part of the world. Overall though, I'm happy with the purchase, especially for the "used" price I got it for.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Stay safe and prepared.
