What I love about it
1) 4K enhancement ability and able to accept 4K signals and output them at a perceivable 4k using pixel shift technology.
2) HDR
3) 20db loudness in ecomode. Can't even hear it 1 foot above my head. In high power it's noticeable but not distracting.
4) 140,000-1 contrast ratio
5) Fully motorized lens shift control, horizontal and vertical and ability to save presets.
What's not so good?
1) Huge size! It's a beast at 35lbs.
2) No audio output or speaker
Side story below is off topic but informational
Before I bought this projector I actually just wanted a slightly bigger TV for my living room but didn't want to spend a lot of money. I had a 55" 1080p and I sit about 11ft away from the screen. I felt it was just a little small for the space. I thought about getting a 65" or 70" but I wouldn't gain much for $1200 over my current TV. I then bought an Optima HD27 for around $600 and didn't like it at all. Image quality was too poor. I then bought an Epson 1060 and really liked the quality and brightness better but the loudness was unbearable. At this point I knew that I had to spend some money in order to get what I wanted. The Epson 5040ub was my first choice but at $2700 it was just too much. I saw the 4000 model and found it is basically the 5040ub's little brother. The only difference is the 4000 is a slightly performance-reduced version of the Home Cinema 5040UB. They are almost identical projectors, with differences only in brightness & contrast. I decided on the 4000. So it was at this point after trying 3 projectors and 3 screens and various mounts and equipment I told the wife I spent $2600 on a $999 TV budget. She was not pleased and told me to send it all back. I showed her some 4K HDR on the Epson 4000 on a 100" screen and she hasn't left the living room. I think she forgave me :)
I A-B compared it to my $50k 3 chip DLP; guess what? Technology has changed so much in 10 years that this Epson is CLEARLY far superior to my $50k projector! The colors are better. It is much brighter (on my 140" wide screen), than my prior projector (which had a 700 watt lamp and was heating up my room and also making a lot of noise!).
I have a 1 hdmi in and 2 hdmi simultaneous out HDMI device. Using that, I turned on both the projectors, onto the same screen. I used a black pillow to cover each lens, while comparatively viewing the other. Frankly, even with the first attempt, the superiority of the Epson was very obvious!
The comparable units from Sony and JVC (both true 4k) are in the $5k to $10k range. It is possible that the $5k sony/JVC would have better contrast but they are definitely NOT worth double/triple the price!
The colors with EPSON are vivid and amazing. It has full electric lens shift, zoom and focus control - which is great for a cheap projector like this - typically, they were manual in the past. The epson is very quiet. I disabled auto Iris (I could hear the auto iris, with the projector being about 2 ft behind me).
Epson is possibly the largest projector manufacturer in the world. This projector is the best value for the money!
Even though this is rated at 2000 lumens, this projector seems brighter than my prior projector, which was rated at 4000 lumens! (MyDLP was calibrated to maximize contrast; hence it might be looking less bright - since the native contrast of that DLP was only 2000:1).
Since the contrast of the EPSON is so much higher, the picture is extremely bright! I had a $30k Sony 2k in the past, which had a 700 watt lamp and a 2000 lumen output; again, this Epson is far brighter than that Sony.
Projector technology is changing rapidly. If you are in the market for a $5k projector, buy this epson for $1700, wait for 3 years and you will get an amazing projector for $3000, after 3 years - probably even a laser based and far brighter 4k unit!
Sept review:
This is a fantastic projector. Clear, bright picture! Easy to set up as well. I have mine 13 feet from 110 inch screen and works great. Seating is 14 feet from the screen. Also purchased the grey screen with this which projects a great image. Purchased both right from Amazon. Screen was also easy to put together with a little patience. HDMI is a must with Home Theater. Better picture and deeper sound. If you are looking for a projector for your home theater, I would highly recommend this combo!

Bright scenes look fantastic. Colors really pop especially with HDR/4K content. It's night scenes that the projector really struggles. If you turn the brightness low, things are too dim to make out what's going on. Too high and the color looks washed out an gray. Black levels are just poor, so this is a good choice if you're either A) on a budget and need 4K and lens memory or B) using it in a room with lots of ambient light and washed out blacks aren't an issue.
The remote requires infrared to reach the projector. This is a huge nuisance since my projector is in the back of the room through a window, very hard to get it to turn on without getting up and firing the signal through the window.
I'll probably use this projector for a couple years and then upgrade to one with better black levels once 4K projectors aren't bonkers in terms of price.
