Cooler by designPrime X299-Deluxe features the most comprehensive cooling controls ever, configurable via Fan Xpert 4 or the UEFI BIOS. Each header can be set to monitor and react to three user-configurable thermal sensors, for workload based cooling. All easily managed by Fan Xpert 4 or UEFI. |
Protect your Graphics Card InvestmentSafeSlot is the PCIe slot reinvented by ASUS and engineered to provide superior retention and shearing resistance. Manufactured in a single step using a new insert-molding process, SafeSlot integrates the slot with fortifying metal for an inherently stronger slot, which is then firmly anchored to the PCB through additional solder points. |

Upon reading the reviews of the X299 Prime deluxe, I was not even going to bother ordering it, yet, it had everything i looked for, so I took the plunge...
I am glad I did, my board works 100% fine...
Pros:
- Posted on first try and not a single issue.I run 2 x M.2 Nvme 960 pros... one 1 TB for OS and a 2 TB for data...and all is good, had not issue to install windows and / or to format drives. Windows and the mobo, recognize them right away.
- After a few tweaks, it is becoming rapidly the best board I ever had.
-Looks fantastic.
-Little LED display that shows mobo temp and other info is so cool and useful.
What I had to do to maximize (Not CONS)
-I updated to BIOS 0802 and it kind of was rough (told me on first boot up after update that it did not work), but i let it cycle through and it indeed worked.
-I had to cut bracket for 2nd M.2 drive so it would not over-extend (cut just above 2280 hole).
- I had to upgrade all Aura and other software, so Aura and also little LED display would work. Once I updated utilities, all came 100% working.
Cons:
-2nd M.2 slot is vertical and held with a bracket...This is a design flaw and one day I will rip this thing off by accident. It also is in the way with radiator hoses when set-up in front of case. I did cut mine to required length with a metal saw and it is so much better.
-I lost USB functionality in back panel, but once I updated BIOS and utilities, all came back to normal.
Overall very satisfied, especially given the multiple bad reviews, I was fearing the worst.

Some things that stood out:
Close Call with Large Components
- It JUST BARELY fits the Noctua D15 and Asus 1080 Ti OC, thank God. There's a few mm of clearance. I believe that you basically have to put the first graphics card into the first PCIe slot for x16 performance, so you can't just bump slots. It seems like someone must have measured that out, or it's a very lucky coincidence. (Also be sure you plug in anything that plugs into the top half of the motherboard, like power, before you mount that D15, it's a monster.)
Buried OLED
- The status OLED is such great idea - not necessary, but it's just reassuring to have the MB speak directly in more than a Qcode (which is also great to have, and the Qcode display on the bottom where it's very unlikely to be blocked.). Someone DIDN'T do the geometry, however, when they positioned the OLED to be buried under one of their own company's flagship GPUs (that 1080 Ti OC). Sometimes, at night, when I try to peer at weird angles through the gaps in the graphics card, I make out a fun-house mirror glimpse of the display reading, like a signal from a distant galaxy.
Congestion in PCIe Lanes
- As another reviewer points out, the last PCIe x16 lane (I think #4) conflicts with SATA 5 and 6 if you have a 28-lane or less CPU, basically there are considerable PCIe restrictions if you don't have a $600+ 44-lane CPU. Which you would understand if you know that stuff and basic math, but I didn't. (Maybe basic math. Maybe.) For one graphics card and the Thunderbolt card, a 28-lane CPU seems sufficient. More than one GPU and you probably need a 7900x+ for the extra lanes. And how you'd fit 3 puzzles me. Seems like PCIe is the weakest link on this board if you're going nuts with your expansion slots.
Bits and Pieces
- The M.2 "screw kit" is the tiniest little package of 1 M.2 screw + 1 standoff. It's NOT part of the other M.2 parts for the vertical mount in second M.2 slot, which contains a stand plus it's own little bag of screw parts. This was very confusing, and it hid itself from me, leading to Amazon shipping me an extra board for the part, which I didn't end up needing. Fortunately, Amazon was awesome about the whole process.
Bloatware
Serious reputation ding - Asus including Winzip with one of the CDs like anyone needs that junk anymore. (It was one of the ASUS CDs, can't remember for sure if it was the MB.) So strike against ASUS overall. Winzip takes over, is horrible to use, tries to upsell you. In Windows 10, you can Extract and Compress files natively. But it's been so long since I had Windows, I naively installed it. Don't. Now I remember why I switched to Mac.
Which Tuning App?
Speaking of which, which utilities that are included one wants to use, simply isn't clear. For example, should I control the fans from Qfan in the BIOS? What about the default controls? What about Fan Xpert 4 which got installed in the corner of my screen when I installed the utilities? Which is better? Do they conflict? It's a similar situation for system overclocking. Asus seems to either provide multiple ways of tuning and monitoring fans and system overclocking parameters, both in the BIOS and applications. Seems like it should be unified.
I called Asus and got a RMA. I specifically clarified with customer service that they would call me if they were unable to reproduce the issue as to prevent them to returning the same mobo back to me.
A week or two later I got an email from Asus customer service saying my board was being returned to me - no details about a repair or whether they were replacing it. I called in and learned they were unable to reproduce the issue and were just returning the same board to me - no repair, etc. After being on the phone with them for an hour and a half (literally), I finally got a "level 3 supervisor" who understood what they were doing was futile. He finally agreed to send me a replacement.
After getting the replacement, I had the exact same issue. It would not recognize the A and B slots, yet each stick of RAM worked fine. As illogical as it seemed to me, I then contacted Corsair who ultimately refused to replace the RAM as it seemed to be working. (I accepted that as it was entirely logical.) The last component I thought might be the culprit was with CPU, but it passed the Intel diagnostic test. Intel's customer service went way above and beyond in helping me, telling me it seemed to be the motherboard, but that they'd replace the CPU since the mobo'd already been returned.
Before activating the CPU return, I called Asus one more time. After another hour and a half on the phone with them (literally!), I learned they'd not sent me a replacement board as promised, but sent the same board back. I told them they needed to send me a replacement and they said it was impossible as they didn't have any available. There was much in this interaction that was just remarkably HORRIBLE customer service.
As I was talking with Asus, I ended up returning the motherboard back to Amazon and bought the MSI X299 Power Gaming AC.
Beyond the RAM issue, the Asus started having issues with my m.2 drive. Horrible product, even worse customer service. Very happy with the MSI so far.
