We got this as a Christmas present for our 9 yr old and he loves it so much! He opened his present at mn on Christmas Eve and he couldn’t stop building the robot and was up until 2am Christmas Day. He woke up late of course and now he’s almost done building Vernie the robot. He’s now coding it and playing tricks to it. My son is quite well experienced with Legos. He’s been building and playing legos since he was a toddler. He started with duplos and bigger bricks that I got from consignment store years ago. He still lacks dexterity with smaller parts so he still asked me for help in putting smaller parts together. But he built Vernie on his own 99% of the time. I told him he can build other things like a guitar, frankie the cat, an auto builder and a bulldozer. He got so excited! I would highly recommend this to all kids who are obsessed with LEGOs! It’s a great learning tool rather than kids playing video games all the time!

Bought this for my son for Christmas as it was on his list. I was hesitant to buy after reading reviews about problems with Bluetooth connectivity, battery and app issues. I took a chance on it because he wanted it so bad and my husband is very tech savvy. Right away we ran into a connectivity issue. My husband tried 2 older Android tablets, my new android tablet that I got for Christmas and two newer Android phones to no avail. He researched online for a couple of hours and finally found the problem and the solution on reddit. The hub had to be upgraded and this was done in about 2 minutes and it connected to my older tablet. We did not have app or battery issues, however, my son shut the hub off while building and turned it on when needed. I had seen a question on Amazon about how to shut the hub off and I wonder if that is the battery issue that some are having. It doesn't say to do this, or even how too, in the instructions. My son builds at least one lego set per week (yes I'm lego broke) so he easily finished it and was playing with it in about four hours (not including the connectivity issue) He did say that the instructions were easy to follow on the app and he was not booted out as some people are saying. He also did not have trouble with the tablet battery running out as some reviews are also saying. For us this was a great buy but I believe that lego dropped the ball on this one. There was never any mention of a hub upgrade on the app and this would be hard for anyone who is not tech savvy (like me) to do the research and actually know what to look for, not to mention doing the actual upgrade. I am sure this has caused quite a few disappointed kiddos and frustrated parents (including me until the issue was corrected) so I gave it four stars. The actual product deserves five stars for how much fun my son had building, coding and playing with it.

LEGO Boost Creative Toolbox is pretty cool, there are multiple projects to build with the included pieces and then you can control them with the app!
(Note- we use a Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablet, we were not able to use the app on the kid profile we set up, it needed to enable location service and the kid mode did not allow that, so we run it in the adult profile and I just turned on the parental controls)

My 6 year old is able to build all of the projects and control them with minimal adult assistance. I thought he would need more assistance given that he is below the recommended age, but he able to build 98% of it without me and mostly just needs help finding pieces or taking the little ones apart. He did manage to break a piece, but now he knows to be more careful with the long connector pieces.
We keep all the Boost pieces separate from our other LEGO in a plastic case with dividers that I used to use for jewelry. It is like 11x15x3 and all the pieces fit nicely inside!

Now he is saving his money up for the Ninjago Stormbringer (70652) and LEGO City Arctic Scout Truck (60194) kits that have additional instructions within the Boost app to connect and control them! I'm sure there are lots of ways to incorporate other sets and pieces to build cool stuff as well.

This was a great project for my son who is 5 and loves legos to work on with some help. It took a few hours to assemble because of the number of steps and different building options. The kids loved making it move around based on various code put into our iPad in the app. I did have to be careful how I stored it in a separate bag so the pieces didn’t get mixed up with our other legos and he can go back and play with it again. We paid about $160 which in lego terms isn’t too far fir the right value for what it does but still a little pricey since it’s hard to play with long term due to the complex instructions and number of pieces. Would be great it it came with a storage case and printed instructions for this price.

As mentioned above, I found a Mindstorm kit back in 1995 which I purchased for my son who had dyslexia but had a 3-D brain. He loved it. He made a variety of contraptions and back then he programmed them on the Apple computer. Fast forward to my years as a special education teacher, I found a lot of my students with dyslexia were interesting learners as well as gifted in many other areas as well. I also noticed that the "gifted education" programs often had grants for robotics programs. I now have a grandson in Kindergarten and when I saw this I grabbed it. He's only five but with the help of his dad, they've already spent over an hour with the basic introductory robot, and my grandson is coding on the Ipad. I think this is going to keep them both busy for a long time. My son is in college now on the GI bill and looking into going into engineering. I think this will be an awesome set for the both of them. I'm looking into getting an additional motor. I think being able to put together two robots would be awesome.

I bought this for my 6 year old son for a Christmas gift. We have worked on it together almost every free night since then, and it is almost march! He loves this robot. The cost seems high until you start using it. It is very easy to learn. It has step by step building that you can access on a bluetooth enabled tablet or pc. It seems like it would be overwhelming, but it doesn't allow you to move on to more complex projects until you complete the previous step. I can't stress enough how great this toy is. I would say that it is a good idea to keep the parts to this robot separate from any other lego projects. We have a dedicated box for this. We also have discovered that it is a good idea to place the parts into containers with separate sections, like a tackle box. This makes looking for parts way faster. Enjoy!!! I know we have.

At the time of writing (August 2021) many people are reporting having connectivity problems this kit. I was initially very disappointed but eventually managed to get past the problem by doing this in the Lego Boost app:
    • When you get the 'bouncing warning triangle' displayed as it's trying to connect hold down the green 'connect' button on the lego FOR 10 SECONDS.
    • The light on the Lego will begin cycling through a number of colours and you'll be prompted to 'Updated Firmware' which you should accept.
    • After a few minutes you'll be taken to a new blank screen where the app attempts to connect. When the 'Boost' box goes green (connected) close the page with the 'X' (top right)
    • Now you should be able to follow the rest of the app's guidance in building and programming without problems.
    Have fun!
