Step 3With the tab lifted and held, extend the cable with the load hook. Release the lift and hold of the tab to reengage the stop pawl. Secure load hook to the load object. |
How to: Apply/Release Tension
|

Step 4Push the drive pawl spring downward. This will engage the drive pawl with the ratchet wheel. |
Step 5Each stroke of the handle will wind the cable to pull load. |
Step 6Lift the drive pawl spring upward. This will lift and disengage the drive pawl from the ratchet wheel. Pump the handle up and down in short strokes towards the stop pawl. The only issue was that braided cable tended to not wind equally which can be corrected by forcing the cable to wind properly.

The dual pawls on this puller don't just "click" when cranking up the tension, they "clunk". That sounds very reassuring. There are no flimsy sides to the cable spool-- the pawls themselves form the sides of the spool and they are thick enough to not warp, jam and complain like my old piece of crap. I pulled a big dead poplar down today that I would never have budged with the disappointment that I used to use. There was no horrible screeching sound from a warped spool scraping the sides of the frame, just a nonchalant, rhythmic clunking as the poplar groaned in agony, hollering out to its neighbours for help. No help came though. A few loud pops later and the big old-timer broke free of its roots and crashed to the ground. Yeah, I've been drinking.
