Dimmest light in it’s class.
Edit: I got to say with this light lacked in a brightness made up and Customer Service. They sent me a new light I didn’t even ask for it and it definitely was brighter , and smoother and more even. I could tell that the LED array was different. So you still need to make sure you get the right one I think if the light looks like the one in the photo are you might wanna tell them to send you a newer one.But one things for sure, if you’re looking for a company that will stand by their product instead of someone with no address or Internet presence and impossible to get a hold of, Gearlight will take care of you. So kudos to them and I look forward to trying out their future products. was anxious to get this light and try it out. It seems to have decent build quality and the focusing ring is smooth. It also has a AA battery adapter so you get the choice between using an 18650 cell or three AAs. Three AA should give you a nominal voltage of 4.5 V as compared to 3.7 V with the 18650. In theory you should get a little bit more brightness out of the AAs.The other thing that I find curious is that the manufacturer doesn’t mention what kind of LED array is being used for the lamp. In my experience this is not a good sign as flashlights that use the Cree arrays are usually pretty proud of that fact, particularly the XHP series.I’m not a fan of the tail cap switch but it’s not a dealbreaker. This one has one but it feels like it’s decent quality. My basic problem is that it’s just not very bright. I don’t wanna mention names because it seems like my reviews get kicked back whenever I mention other brands so let’s just say I’ve comparing this light to one of similar price, between 10 and $20. And it uses a Cree XHP50.You can see by the photo where I have focused them at about the same size circle, and the one on the left that is the Cress is significantly brighter than the Gearlight. The wider you go, the bigger and more noticeable the difference. And remember the Gearlight is getting .8 V more juice to the diode. The light also has a little bit more of a yellow cast to it with a strong yellow fringe around the edge. However before you get to the edge the light circle is fairly evenly lit. That shows it does have a decent focusing lens and reflector. The XHP 50 wall considerably brighter it does show a more uneven lighting pattern. One cool thing about these LED flashlights that focus is that when you bring the beam down to its most narrow focus you’re essentially projecting an image of the actual LED array onto whatever you’re shining light on. So if you shine it on a flat white surface you get a decent image of the actual LED array.Or you can see the two comparisons that I’ve tried to keep the doorway about the same size so the Cree has its typical quad array which it has been using for sometime. The gear A has these narrow strips and essentially a zigzag pattern. I’ve seen these arrays before but in much older lamps. And if you use the size of the doorway to compare you can see the Cree is actually much bigger. There obviously a lot of people very happy with this light and my guess is they don’t have a lot of experience with high output compact flashlights. I do and this one is just too dim for me. Especially considering all of the varied low cost options out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy, hefty, bright and durable; well-pleased I took the risk.
Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2023
As a connoisseur of flashlights I was skeptical of quality at this price. I'm well-pleased I took the risk.

I had a single 26650 battery from a defective Chinese flashlight. $17 USD was about as much as I wanted to risk on a home for the battery. The light was larger, sturdier and more pleasing than I expected.

Mini-Maglights, my favorite in their time, cost more for less bang-for-buck back in the day. Maglights were sturdy, but nowhere near as bright. I used to buy 3rd party LEDs for Maglights to enjoy brightness plus durability.

This one won't fit into your jeans pocket; this one needs a hoodie or a jacket. But it's hefty as a weapon, and certainly sturdy enough. No more expensive broken flashlights for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Please Note It Requires 3 AA Batteries (Not Included)
Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2018
I bought this flashlight for dog walks and did not see anywhere in the advertisement that it requires 3 batteries, which are not included. Had I known that I would not have ordered it. Perhaps it works but since I don't have batteries I will never know. I found it very heavy and awkward to hold. It was hard for me to twist the parts needed to tighten the "tail cap" and work the zoom. There is a sticker on the front of the box (click on my photos to see) which advises to tighten the tail cap if the light doesn't turn on or if it flickers. After tightening the cap I still was left in the dark (literally). It was only after studying the instruction manual that I learned there is a battery compartment (empty) with spaces for 3 AA batteries. The manual also states this product requires ocassional cleaning of corrosion and lubricating with petroleum jelly. Not only do I not have AA batteries but I also do not own petroleum jelly--neither of which are in this month's budget.

UPDATE: The seller reached out to me and they have been very kind. But I still do not know if the Gear Light works. They are sending a replacement with batteries.

Please read the full description at the bottom of the ad page on Amazon before you order. There it states the required batteries are not included. My bad. I missed that part somehow. Part of my confusion came from the photo image of the product box which states "AA Battery" in red front. I mistakenly thought this meant it came with said battery. I have upgraded this to 3 stars and trust the flashlight will work with proper batteries installed. However, it is still very heavy and awkward to hold and it is hard for me to twist the parts needed to operate it. If you have strong hands and like a heavy flashlight you might find it satisfactory. Certainly, this seller deserves 5 stars, as does Amazon, for supplying products we dog owners need. No late night dog walks until I find a flashlight that works for us. Meanwhile, my pooch will have to use his Amazon potty pads when nature calls after dark. I will keep you posted.

2nd UPDATE: GearLight customer service went the extra mile to gain my trust and satusfaction. They sent a new flashlight with batteries installed and pre-tested from the factory. The flashlight model S1200, that I ordered, is amazing but it still is a bit too heavy for me to handle comfortably with carpal tunnel. They also included model S1000 which is slimmer and a bit lighter--it comes with two flashlights and a box of AAA batteries were included for the S1000 models. Not only that, but Nathaniel Newman, Customer Service Manager for GearLight, wrote me a personal letter included with my 2-day priority shipment. I am so impressed. And on top of the excellent customer service, all of the flashlights work as advertised. The slimmer models even come with handy carrying cases. I have a slim one attached to my dog's bait belt. We took our first night dog walk last night and the flashlight was unlike any I have ever owned. The high beam is like a search light--very bright and wide. I love that you can adust the size of the beam. Thank you GearLight for these very useful products. And a special paws up and tail wags from my little min pin service dog who gets to go for walks again. No more potty pads unless nature calls during a storm or very late at night.
