Top-notch hub, especially for late model Macbook Pros
5 Stars
Top-notch hub, especially for late model Macbook Pros
This Cable Matters dock beats two others that I've tried, simply because it works -- and in true plug-and-play fashion. It solves all of the connectivity challenges of my Macbook Pro (which has only Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C ports on board). As to reliability long-term, I'll update this review if anything goes south -- I've had it for only a week. But, for now, it's the best gear I've been able to find.Long review here, because I appreciate products that work "as described".MY USAGE & REQUIREMENTS: (I can't speak for Windows, which I use only occasionally. All I know is that Cable Matters provides Windows drivers, plainly available for download at their product page.)I use my late-model Macbook Pro (manufacture date: 09-18-2017) about 80% of the time like a desktop machine: with the lid closed and connected to a large external HD monitor (LG brand), wired (RJ-45) connection to my internet provider's modem, external wireless keyboard & mouse, numerous USB peripherals, wireless printer and scanner, a label printer, and two external SSD drives (one dedicated to 24/7 Time Machine backups). I connect those two drives directly via the Thunderbolt 3 ports on the Mac. With so many peripherals in regular use, it's pretty obvious why I would want a dock.Fortunately, this dock is also small and lightweight enough to be easily portable wherever I go, so I can have a "traveling office" when I need it.To easily connect all the USB devices, I have an AmazonBasics USB-A 3.1 10-Port Hub plugged into one of the USB ports on the Cable Matters dock. (And I've confirmed I'm getting USB 3 speeds with this, see below.)PERFORMANCE: This dock is supporting all of the above flawlessly, all at once, in addition to providing a 60-watt charge to the laptop (more than sufficient to maintain a full charge at all times), all through the dock's single Thunderbolt 3 cable to the laptop. For the USB connections, I use a great app called Blackmagic Disk Speed Test to test data throughput. This app writes and reads 5 gb of dummy data to any drive you specify and reports on both. Using an older 7,200 RPM external 3.5" drive in an enclosure that supports USB 3.0 connections, here are the readouts I get: WRITE: 147 mb/s -- READ: 153 mb/s. These speeds are significantly above those reported by MacWorld in their own USB 3.0 tests. To be clear: these are the speeds I'm getting with this external drive connected to the Amazon 10-port hub, which is then connected to the Cable Matters dock. (When doing the same test to an SSD connected directly to one of the laptop's Thunderbolt 3 ports, you get about 4 times those data transfer speeds.)After disconnecting external hard drives, I unplugged the main Thunderbolt 3 cable between the dock and the laptop. Of course, everything (including the external monitor ) went "dark" instantly. But when I plugged it back in, everything came right back up. So, it's real plug-and-play, in my experience.TECH SUPPORT: Due to "user error" on my part, I initially thought the dock wasn't charging the laptop properly. Cable Matters tech support got back to me within 12 hours. (The problem: I had the single Thunderbolt 3 cable between the dock and the laptop plugged into the wrong port on the dock; everything was working that way, but only a 15 watt charge was coming through. Duh -- but in my defense, which Thunderbolt 3 port is which is not at all clear in the documentation sent with the product. Tech support sent me a much clearer diagram I had not seen and it revealed all, which I am posting here with my review.)I used another clever app called coconutBattery (great diagnostics) to confirm that my Mac is now indeed receiving 60 watts of power from the dock -- exactly the wattage as advertised by Cable Matters. I rate their tech support as "Excellent".PROBLEMS WITH OTHER DOCKS I'VE TRIED: I won't name names (because they gladly provided refunds), but this Thunderbolt 3 technology is apparently a tricky business for some vendors. My first such dock I returned immediately. A second and similar dock from another vendor seemed to work fine at first, but I kept noticing problems. The first was the analog headphone jack on that dock stopped working. Then I noticed that -- when I connected my iPhone directly to that dock's USB port -- the phone would charge but the Mac couldn't recognize the iPhone as connected: it was impossible to transfer photos from the phone in Photos. Huh. The last straw with that dock was when all the USB ports died (I think the whole unit died). So, back it went, and what a hassle. I appreciated the vendor's refund because this all occurred months after I bought it, right here at Amazon.CONCLUSION: You too are likely to be happy with this Cable Matters dock. I really rely on it now, and if any problems occur with it (that can't be resolved), I'll update this review. Welcome to the bleeding edge, everyone! Cable Matters does seem to know what they're doing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Received a previously used product, scratched, and missing documentation.

I ordered this product from Amazon on April 21st. My intent was to replace a little portable external USB hub, an SD card reader, and an HDMI adapter with a single unit that sits in front my monitor while my laptop is off to the side. Looking through many different options for a hub, this seemed to have the right combinations of ports to suit my needs.

After waiting three weeks for it to arrive, I opened the box to see a product with significant damage on the outside, and missing documentation (the empty bag). Clearly this was a used product, and the contents weren't checked before sending out to another customer.

I've checked a couple of the USB ports, the HDMI port, and the SD card reader, and they seem to be OK so far. I get sound and microphone from the headphone port, but the volume controls on the headphones don't work (they work fine when plugged directly into the laptop). While the provided thunderbolt cable is as long as described (~18"), this is far too short to be of much use, so add another $30 to the cost for a longer cable.

While this product has the right combination of ports, and most of the ones I've tried seem functional (except for the volume control on the headphones), had I seen it in store in a store I would not have purchased this particular unit. Selling a refurbished unit as brand-new for full price is not OK.
