Like many people I had hesitated about going Tivo because of the annual fee. When my cable company, Spectrum, dropped support for multi-room DVR's I looked again and soon realized that the $149.99 per year Tivo fee was less than the $240.00 a year I was paying Spectrum for a DVR that could not connect to other devices in my home. Yes, there was a considerable up-front cost ($490) in purchasing the Tivo, but it delivers far more. All in all I am very happy with the Tivo experience. I bought two Minis (reviewed separately) to extend the functionality of the Bolt to other Tvs, with no additional annual fee.
Like other reviewers I found the setup to be lengthy. Tivo helps you a great deal through the process, but there are aspects that it took a while to figure out.
First you have to register your Tivo device with Tivo, which you do online. There will be a delay up to 24 hours until the registration is complete (mine took about 6 hours). After that you follow the on-screen instructions. One of the first decisions is what kind of network to connect the Bolt to. If the Bolt will be your only Tivo device, feel free to select WiFi. Tivo will use WiFi to connect to Mama Tivo and download schedules, firmware updates and the like as well as to verify the registration. Your programming will be coming though the coax cable the Bolt must use to connect to your cable company. If you are going to stream to other Tivo devices like the Mini, you should ideally use an Ethernet or Moca connection. If you have this all set up, you are in good shape. If not, Ethernet is rather awkward to wire up between rooms, so I would go with Moca. This will either work immediately or, more likely, require some additional hardware in your basement where the cable coax comes in.
There is a third alternative, which works pretty well for me. With WiFi routers like the Linksys Velop or standalone WiFi extender devices that have an Ethernet port, you can connect Tivo Minis or other devices to the Bolt through your WiFi network. You do not need a coax outlet nearby; you can put this anywhere near a power outlet. It's not recommended because WiFi networks occasionally have connectivity interruptions. This matters when streaming video content. It does not seem to be a bandwidth issue rather the inherent properties of WiFi networks.
These interruptions are infrequent; they might happen twice in one day and then not for another 3 weeks or more. Most are very brief ( a few seconds); you have to restart whatever you are watching. Nothing is lost with a recording. Note that this connectivity issue does NOT affect your primary Tivo DVR, which is connected by coax to your cable provider. It only effects other devices (like a Mini) connected to your DVR.
To accomplish a WiFi setup you need for each remote Tivo device a WiFi extension which provides an Ethernet port. Most do. I use the Linksys Velop for one Tivo Mini and a Trendnet WiFi booster for the other.
Once you have connected the Bolt to a network it will download a lot of data to get started. This may be rather unnerving as it can take a surprisingly long time. The screen may say it is "preparing to download" for a long time, two hours or more. Once downloading starts, it can take more than a few minutes as well. Tivo does not really reveal what is going on, but I suspect partly it is updating the firmware. Once this process finally finishes, Tivo will be ready for the cable card.
Depending on your cable company, you may have to activate the cable card. With Spectrum this meant getting a knowledgeable technician on the phone and providing that person with an activation key you will see on your TV screen. You may have to navigate the settings and help menus to find it. The Spectrum technician was surprisingly helpful and knowledgeable about Tivos. Once activated, Tivo should be able to show your channels. If not, you may have to unplug and restart the Bolt (I did).
Once you have gotten this far, be sure to check whether you are receiving all the channels you expect to get. With Spectrum, the cable card would not transfer all my channels, especially premium channels I am paying extra for. The solution is a "tuner adapter," yet another box you get from your cable company. (Spectrum does not charge for these boxes.) Once again I had to call a Spectrum technician to activate the tuner adapter, and again I hard to restart both boxes to get it to work. You will also need a coax splitter to feed the coax to both boxes. The tuner adapter then connects to the Bolt thru a USB cable; be sure put it in the upper USB port on the Bolt.
Another thing you may want to consider, which Tivo does not address, is the operating temperature of the Bolt. You check this by going to Settings/Help and then System information. Look for the ODT number, which is the temperature in centigrade. Tivo does not provide a range for this number, but after checking around I found that you want this number to be under 70, the lower the better. 60 or under is great, and 65 or so is probably OK. If your Bolt is sitting on a shelf it will probably be all right. The curved shape is designed to flow air underneath to cool it. But if you have it in a closed cabinet, it may get too hot. The solution I found it to put plastic bottle caps under the corners to give it more air underneath. If this doesn't lower the temperature enough, your can get a small USB fan from Amazon and plug it into the second USB port on the Bolt for power. Using both got my Bolt down from 70C to 58C in a closed cabinet.
The Bolt remote connected easily to my TV using the on-screen instruction under Settings, allowing me to turn the TV off and on, adjust the volume and mute. However the separate pairing to my TV input settings did not work with either my LG or TCL Tvs. I could get the input menu to come up, but the Tivo remote would not navigate that menu. All this means is that if I want to change inputs to another device like a Roku, DNLA server, or Blu-Ray player I have to use the TV remote. The voice control on the remote works very well.
Since getting the Bolt I bought a new 40" LED TV for the bedroom. I saved money by not getting a smart TV, because the Tivo provides most of these functions, such as Netflix, etc. While it does not connect with DLNA to your computer for streaming video files, you can accomplish the same thing by using the PLEX app on the Tivo, once you have set up PLEX on your computer.
The new menu is designed for those who love to push buttons! Now takes a minimum of 7 button presses to get a recorded movie to play (Used to take 3) To play a recorded show: push TiVo Botton, select My Shows, Step passed the pretty pictures of the shows you’ve recorded, step over the option to see a list of partially watched shows, step thru the menu of show types, and your finally on your list of shows. All recorded shows are in groups now even when there is only a single episode (another extra button push). And now your finally on the show you want to watch - but wait, now you have to select from another menu of Delete, Play, Keep, Bookmark, etc - yippy, you can now get the recording to play...
TiVo also loves to give you messages while you’re watching you shows. If you watching in delay (you know so you can skip past all those commercials) and tuner thinks it’s now recording the next show, it will pop up with a message to let you know, but usually with a “Title unavailable”.
Another sad message that gets really annoying is “having a problem with the signal: V53”. We have Charter/Spectrum, which unlike Satellite which drops out during bad weather (according to Charter), their service drops out during any kind of weather. Every time there is a hiccup you’ll get a message that last so long it thinks it needs to go into “screen saver mode” and start floating all over the screen.
One the things that’s great about recorded shows, is the “Skip” function. It is so nice to be to just hit the skip button and instantly jump over commercials. Really works great. The problem, the buttons that are closest to each other (almost touching) are Skip and NetFlix... NetFlix? (TiVo must have received a huge payout for that one.) So you’re into your show and the commercial starts and you go for the Skip button only to now see your Netflix login... Okay, back out of NetFlix to get back to your show, but no - you have start over to get your show up and find the position where left off, because TiVo thinks you gave up on your show to go do something else.
And how about the guide itself... This has been getting worse and worse over the years but their latest issue seems to be with the ability to identify new episodes. A show that aired two weeks ago will show up as “New”, or a particularly episode may show up as “New” for days on end. But it really get frustrating when you set a “One Pass” for show and it will only record the “encore” presentation (it thinks is new) airing just before the actual new episode, which it won’t record because it thinks it is the one it just recorded, in fact when you try to record the new one it will ask if you want to “re-record” the show already recorded. In some cases it just has the wrong information (week after week) and I have to go to the network web site to get the real show times. (Ex: “How the universe works” on Science channel, Tuesdays, it will record the episode at 7:04PM when the actual showing is at 10:10PM. TiVo menu show identical listings for both times, but the earlier one is last weeks. TiVo won’t record the 10:10 showing using One Pass. The Science Channel web site list correct listings)
Another negative on the program guide - a few years ago TiVo changed their channel guide menu provider from a really good source to this current flop. These guide entries usually have more opinion than description. By the time they have finished telling you how good or exciting, or funny they thought this was and all the actors and guests appearing they’ve run out room to describe what its about.
So, even though I’ve only had this new upgraded TiVo box a few months, and have paid my lifetime subscription fees just to get the 4K version, I’m considering trashing the whole thing.
You're watching a program that you've backed up, and suddenly the screen goes blank. When you push Play to continue, you find that it has jumped to the current time and 𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜. Okay, you think, this was just a glitch. But it happens again. And again. And again. And then you realize that the expensive box with its very expensive service isn't working.
So, you contact TiVo service, but discover that they have nothing useful to say about the problems. And, they point out the fine print you missed that says the TiVo has only a THREE MONTH warranty (not the usual one year for consumer products), so you're out of luck. TiVo obviously has no faith in their products, and you should not either.
Of all the tech products I've bought in the past year (and there have been many), TiVo is my biggest regret.
