The downside is that there are a few quirks to consider. Drive (synologies equivalent app to DropBox or Google drive) does not seem to work as seamlessly. Simply storing info into drive does not seem to move it to the NAS device. If I mount the NAS as a shared folder I can save documents to it and then they appear in Drive on any device I add the app to. Could be my inexperience. Moments is tied to Drive. Once Drive is loaded the more sophisticated CloudStation Server app cannot be used. Basically you have to choose one or the other (Drive or Cloudstation).
Lastly (and this is my fault), this unit does not transcribe movie formats. So if you have a mix of formats you will need to use an external device to recode them in to a MPEG format. Here I should have done a little more research, but the workaround is simple, use your computer, using open source software and recode it and just store the recoded files.
I am able to run video directly from my Samsung Smart TV, or an Apple TV (you need to use your phone to push the video to start on Apple TV, but once you do this your phone is no longer needed. This is similar to how Chromcast seems to work). It also works on Roku, although Roku is giving a message that the video app is not fully compatible and will no longer be available after the end of 2018.
I am amazed how much data you can store on this device. I purchased two 4 Terabyte NAS disks, and with everything I placed on it am using less then a terabyte of storage!
I have a 2bay DS218j system, I put in 2 WD 1TB BLACK 7200 drives (they were sitting around) to start with. Holy moly, that stuff is smoking fast!!! Backed up 500gb of data in very short time. Along the way, I discovered the other features "apps" of the DSM system. I love the fact that now my data is SHR-1 (Synology Hybrid Raid - type 1) backed up over two 1tb drives. Underlying system being *nix does not hurt... I love it! I couldn't make my ubuntu servers do this stuff that Synology does out of the box.
The Synology is a good replacement for a server in a small company or office or at home. Centralized data backup and the apps allow LDAP, chat, calendar, web server etc and other features that you would need for a business. I think for the price it is amazing! The OS is very polished, and I was wrong to pre-judge based on what was going on in 2004-10 time frame. The company has come a long way.
I can't wait to buy a Synology DS418play next. I think I'll keep the 218j for some stuff on the network, but I am already laying out capital expenditure for a DS418play + 4*4tb Seagate IronWolf 256mb drives.
Goodbye my WD NAS's, I knew you but not so well now.....
Edit: I moved from two 1tb WD Black to two 3tb WD Red - the process was rather seemless. Shutdown NAS, Open box, pull out one of the 1tb WD Black drive, replace with the 3tb WD Red drives. Power up. It detects an issue, then after a few menu options it will repair the drive. Default option is very slow about 10-50mb/s transfer rate, however one of the tabs (for the raid rebuild page), you can go faster, or a custom mode. If you use faster it will rebuild at 100-150mb/s, however at detriment to your drive life, I created a custom of minimum 30 with a max of 100, and it got down quick. After the data is mirrored, you shut down the NAS again, replace the other drive and do the mirroring again.. pretty seemless.
Top reviews from other countries
Installing is easy, formatting a new 6TB is reasonably fast. Started copying files onto it from an external USB HDD, OK, about 30 MB/s (USB 2.0). Tried copying from my internal HDD - wow! over 80 MB/s. Tried copying from a few HDD from my PC & Mac at the same time, the speed is over 100 MB/s! totally maximizing the 1 gigabit ethernet! It still is!
It may not be an advanced NAS or file server, but totally meets my needs to be a file server streaming music & media to my TV, PC, Mac & mobile devices.
The greatest technology equipment I have bought, for years. EXCELLENT. (BTW, I seldom write product reviews!)
Montage rapide
Configuration facile
Tres intuitif d'utlisation
tres bonnes performance.
