How to choose the right garden pruner, Bypass or Anvil?

With a bypass cutting tool, you draw a curved or straight blade past another blade — this creates a scissor-like motion that works well for cutting live green plants. The spongy, firm outer wall surrounding the stem yields easily to that bypass motion.

With an anvil cutting tool, you bring down a straight blade against a wide anvil usually made of steel or hard rubber. Anvil pruners are better suited for dead and dried-out plants — the crushing motion causes the brittle stem to kind of explode and separate.

SK-5 Blades of Steel. Steal your money!
Avid horticulturists and gardening hobbyists beware. Please read this. Before I start my diatribe I'd like to tell you that I have never reviewed an Amazon product before. I have always assumed if I'm willing to pay the incredibly low price for most things, then I already have the low expectations and I have no need to complain. However, this really chapped me. This tool was an attractive, quality, looking tool which was somewhat inexpensive. But brands like Fiskar's were competitively priced to these Gonnic Anvil Pruners and I have owned and believe Fiskar's to be of good quality. I thought I'd give the Gonnic Pruners a whirl. When I received the tool It looked to be of exceedingly good quality for the price and I was happy about the purchase I had made. I used it a couple of times to trim bushes and small branches and it felt good and cut well, although they did dull quickly and soon didn't cut well anymore. I take care of my tools; clean, lubricate, and sharpen them on a regular basis. I decided it was time to sharpen the puners and went to the garage to get my tool sharpeners. When I was about to begin sharpening the pruner, I noticed a large nick. I thought to myself, "how is it possible that there is a nick from cutting stems and branches?" I was stunned and upset with the situation at hand. These were made of steel. Why would cutting stems and branches produce a large sized nick in the "steel" pruners? I was deflated. I was so happy with how these pruners felt in my hand and the appearance of quality that they displayed and was utterly let down. And yet that's not the end of it. There is a locking mechanism on the pruners that you slide in one direction to lock the pruners closed and you slide the mechanism in the other direction to open the pruners. When you are using the pruners the mechanism kept sliding to the locked position when you completed the process of cutting the branch. Because of this defect you had to unlock the mechanism every time you went to cut the next branch. I tried to tighten the piece but it is permanent and there is no way to adjust the part. Look, all I'm saying is don't be taken in by the quality looks and the tempting verbiage on their page. I am going to contact the company, but I wanted to write this first, because they say they have great customer service and a lifetime replacement warranty, but who wants a replacement of pruners whose blades are not tough and capable of handling yard work? I hope this helps those folks who are tempted to pull the trigger. I have attached photos of the damage to the blade and took a picture of the locking mechanism just to show you what it looks like.

They're just pruning shears right? Yes, yes they are. And these got everything right. Very sharp and ergonomic for my hand(s). The wife gives two thumbs up as well. Grips are excellent even when wet. I just put these through their paces trimming back 50ish feet of creeping juniper ground cover around our pool. Some branches were nearing 3/4" diameter, no problem, right through them like butter. We've had several sets over the years all which did just fine. Up until now I thought all shears were pretty much created equal, not so. These shears are by far the best shears we've owned. Just darn good, solid, quality shears. And I know my shears from using them for 40+ years (yeah, I'm that old). The only thing I can't comment on is life span. So far after extensive use as mentioned above they are still plenty sharp. I foresee many years of use from these and may just grab another pair before they get discontinued or replaced by an "upgraded" pair (we all know how that can be sometimes). So if you are even contemplating as set of shears I can wholeheartedly recommend these excellent ones. 5 star rating from me all day and all night on these bad boys.

The Gonicc 8" Professional SK-5 clippers are the real deal; you can lop off 1/2-inch branches with ease. They incorporate a small toothed gear at the hinge that effectively doubles the closing pressure to cut thick branches without wearing out your hand. The clippers are attractive (shrug), comfortable and well-made.

My single problem arose when they first arrived. I simply could not get the blade lock button to slide back to release the blades, but a couple of whacks with pliers finally got it loose. The instructions do not state that you need to squeeze the handle to release the button, so I'm uncertain if it was that or just temporarily jammed. Anyway, I won't count it against the clippers because I feel kinda dumb.

NOTE: I also bought the Gonicc 8" Professional Premium Titanium Bypass Pruning Shears (GPPS-1003)--these clippers have a major design flaw. The spring mechanism in the GPPS-1003 shot off an got lost within five minutes rendering them useless! This is a known problem since they include an extra spring in the package, but I doubt the other spring will last much longer. Take my advice and buy the SK-5 listed above, NOT the GPPS-1003.

Five stars.

Rivet that holds blade locking mechanism slides freely back and forth so that when you are cutting at a downward angle the blades lock after every cut, and you have to slide the rivet back to open the blades. Other than that, it cuts OK. My fault for not sending the shears back within the return period. Seller says "Lifetime Satisfaction Guarantee" for any reason, so will contact them next, and possibly modify my review depending on what they do.
Update, 10/31/2019 Seller responded quickly by writing "It should be an isolated incident", and is sending a replacement. Will update again, and add more stars to my review if the replacement works better.
Update, 11/2/2019 Replacement arrived and appears to work better, although it doesn't take much effort to move the locking mechanism back and forth. If the same issue presents itself, will probably tape it in the open position. Kudos to the seller for taking such quick action. Much appreciated!

I like that the pruner cuts up to 5 inches, but I don’t like that when I hold the pruner down the locking button locks automatically. Then I have to stop and put it back in position. That is irritating. Otherwise it works great.
