Cross-Platform Compatibility

This progressive Thunderbolt 3 dock (now supporting Thunderbolt 4 laptops at Thunderbolt 3 features) works with both Windows and macOS; providing the ultimate laptop docking station.

Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C Docking Station – FAQ

Q: Do all Thunderbolt 3 desktop docking stations support USB-C laptops as well?

A: No, in order for a Thunderbolt 3 desktop docking station to be compatible with USB-C laptops, the docking station (like our SD5500T) must use the Intel Titan Ridge chipset.

Q: Is this dock compatible with laptops that can only connect via a USB-A port?

A: No

Q: Does this dock require driver installation?

A: With macOS and Windows 10 and 8.1, the operating system will download and install the necessary drivers automatically. Please be sure your Intel Thunderbolt software is installed. For more details see thunderbolttechnology.net/updates

Q: Does this dock support USB Power Delivery (PD)?

A: Supports USB-C PD 2.0 (85W of laptop charging)

Q: What if my device has a USB-C port but it doesn’t support Power Delivery (PD)?

A: Unfortunately, charging will not be supported then. However, data and video functionality will still be supported.

Q: How many monitors does the dock support and what are the max resolution supported?

A: Single monitor: 5K (5120 x 2880 @ 60Hz) or Dual monitors: 4K (4096 x 2160 @ 60 Hz)

Q: My computer supports dual-monitor extended mode, but there is no display on the 2nd monitor.

A: Sometimes the 2nd monitor will not automatically be displayed. You may have to use the Intel, Nvidia, or other compatible graphics card settings application to ‘unhide’ the second monitor.

Q: Does the dock support fast-charging for my phone?

A: Yes, the front USB Type-A port supports 5V/2.1A and the front USB-C port supports 5V/3A

Q: Can I use other USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 cables (not from the original box) on this dock?

A: No, we can only assure the Kensington cables shipping with the dock would work. USB cables can vary greatly between different manufacturers. We recommend users to contact Kensington for replacement if needed.

Q: My Mac system included an 87W power adapter, will this dock still charge my system?

Yes, but the charge speed can vary based on the docking station in question.

A: This dock supports up to 85W of charging. While it will charge slower than 87W, it will still rapidly charge your laptop.

Q: Is there a way to mount the dock behind my monitor?

A: Yes, (with the exception of LD5400T, Lock and Dock series) our docks have VESA mount holes, but the VESA mount is not included. The following VESA mount is compatible with this docking station (K33959WW).

Q: Will this dock work with Kensington’s DockWorks software?

A: Yes, however, please visit kensington.com/dockworks/ for a complete list of the docking stations that are compatible with DockWorks.

Highly recommend for someone looking for dual displays (not mirrored) - extended
I have been looking for a true dual display hub with built in charging for my work desk. I have a 2018 macbook pro 13" with touch bar/ID. After trying a few others from Best Buy and Fry's (one of which i had to return), this did the job. Single wire to my laptop for everything. I even have a Jabra headset bluetooth dongle on it, which works fine btw. with the laptop home screen, I have three (3) total - not mirrored - extended. I would highly recommend this to anyone else. Compared to some of the other ones at $300 or so, I thought this was also good value. And the dark grey goes with my laptop, which was a plus.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid build, but I have to unplug it twice a day
Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2019
It looks good, and feels like a quality item, but has a big flaw.
Half of the time that I take my 3 month old MacBook pro out of sleep, or just reopen the lid, the display port output from the dock does not send a signal to the monitor (I have two new large external LG monitors). So I have to reach behind the doc and unplug it, and then wait for the monitors to get discovered by the Mac, maybe 30 seconds. I wish it just had two HDMI outputs and that they both worked reliably.
I also wish the front of it was covered with old style USB receptacles, because as you can see in the picture I had to buy an amazon basics 7 plug USB hub (highly recommended).
Given that the dock has a display port issue, I wish it had a power switch on the front so that I could reboot it more easily.
I didn't find a good quality alternative from a known company (I am unwilling to send data through a hub from a no-name company, that could be full of spyware). So I am living with the reboot inconvenience.

I might buy one of those foot operated xmas tree extension cords, so I can reboot it more easily. Or maybe one of those idevices homekit plugs, "Siri, reboot my Kensington dock" (kind of just kidding).
