Magzo vs Sentry

Magzo vs Sentry
I needed two screens and, based on the reviews, could not decide between the Sentry and the Magzo, so I bought one of each. I have just finished installing them and so can’t give a durability assessment, but i do have some purchase and installation suggestions, as well as some comparisons.PRODUCt COMPARISONI bought what was advertsed as the 36” x 80” in each brand, but they are not the same size. Out of the box the two screens look like they could have been made in the same factory, and perhaps they were, but to different specications. The screen material serms identical, as do the magbets along the closure. However, the exterior dimensions of the Sentry are 79” x 37” while the Magzo is actually 36” x 80” as advertised. The only other difference i noticed between them was that the Sentry had a couple of weights on the bottom edge, which presumably makes it less likely to be affected by wind. The tacks included are even the same, although the Sentry ones come in a nice little plastic box while the Magzo is in cardboard. In general the Sentry people put more effort into the packaging than Magzo.INTALLATION The two brands give different installation instructions. Sentry advises putting the velcro tape on the door framre and then attaching the screen to it. Magzo recommends putting the tape on the screen and then peeling off the backing to expose the sticky part as you install it. I used the Magzo method because it looked easier to install with one person. In retrospect I would advise use the Magzo approach for another reason, at least in an installation where the screen is not going to have excess material inthe width. If you are going to have a screen that does not have excess width, you need to be able to see as you stick the tape on how taught the screen is. In my case I changed where i put the tape to make the screen flat. If i had installed the tape first I would have put it in a different position and there would have been a couple of eaxtra inches of material in the width.PURCHSE CONSiDERATIONS First of all, i would suggest buying a screen like these two, which have a lot of magnets on the closure and vervro all the way around. A few months ago I bought from a “local” merchant — OSH — on the theory that Amazon is taking over the world, destroying local businesses, etc. The screens from OSH were very easy to intall as the screen hung from a spring tension rod and had only a few velcro tabs to stick to the sides, and a lerge magnet holding an overlapping enclosure. The big magnet was so strong it made the screen hard to open, the rod kept falling down, and the w velcro tabs pulled away from the sides. I gave them away on Nextdoor. Second, some screens talk about being adjustable for different door sizes, but i’m not sure how that would work. Maybe you could cut the velcro strip off the sides or top and then glue it back onto the screen, but that would, at a minimum, increase your installation effort significantly. I would suggest trying to buy a screen that can be installed without such alterations. There are a lot of different screensizes abailable, so getting one that fits is best. That raises the question of what size to get for yor door. My doors were 80” x 34” and 79” x 33 inches where i wanted to install them. The sill sloped down, so the doors were nominally the same height, but i planned to install one higher on the sill than the other. So there are two things to keep in mind. The first is where you are planning to stick the velcro and the second is the size of the screen. There is a 1” boarder around the top and sides of the screen. The Sentry screen will cover, then, a 35” door opening and the Magzo a opening of 34”, with the screens flat. If the door height is 80”, neither screen is going to touch the bottom of the door, because of the velcro strip across the top. I had planned to install the screens so that the velcro strips would have been facing each other with the screen at right angles to the strips. This does not allow the width to be adjusted except by cutting the screen. I ended up attaching the velcro to the outside of the from, which let me adjust the width so the screen was flat. Unless you want to cut the screen or it fits perfectly attaching the velcro to the inside of the frame, I would recommend planning to install it on the outside, so that the screen and the velcro are in the same plane. One last point. The pins that come with these doors only work in a wooden from. My frame is metal, so I bought some 3/4” pan head black sheet metal screws to secure the top and sides. I only put them on one of the doors— im going to see how the velcro holds up on the other one for now. If you do this, br careful the screen does get wrapped up in your drill bit and be sure to drill a hole nearly as big as the screw, as metal is much less forgiving than wood. I didn’t get washers, but I would recommend using them, as the holes in the screen borders may end up being bigger than the screw head.

What an amazing product - compared to what I've seen in the past - I'd give it 6 stars if I could, not only because it works great but because my dogs love it!! :-) My friend has a great backyard that my dogs love to play in when we come for extended visits - but he wasn't too happy about the flies coming in his house when I left the door open for them - and, like some dogs, they would want to come in, then go back out, 'all day long'. :-) So I bought him this 'screen door'. The quality is excellent - does not feel too thin or easily torn and it looks really nice. Install was straight forward if you follow the instructions. It took under an hour to install - especially when you have 'two' bosses on the job. :-) I was very impressed with how well the magnets work on this screen - sometimes it takes a moment or two to connect but it always connects, nice and snugly. We did find that although we had to order the longer length than the actual door size, we felt we could do as others suggested and install it a bit higher if it was too long. But such was not the case - which I thought was odd. It fit perfectly top to bottom - although, on occasion, there is a small gap at the bottom (see photo) - in other words, it's probably best to order longer if available for your door size. That did not seem to be an issue, however - as no flies tried to get in from the bottom and most of the time there was no gap. The other problem to consider, in my friend's application, is his door is metal. That means you have to consciously flip the door screen behind you when entering otherwise sometimes it will 'attach' to the door instead of itself if you have a metal door. I was also concerned it may look tacky leaving it up all year long - but it actually looks quite nice and will be great for him when he wants to just leave the door open for natural breezes. But the best part about this screen is it is dog-friendly! My two great danes are very boundary conscious - they will never try to jump a small gate or even a low decorative edging around a flower bed. I feared they would see this screen as a barrier and would not even try to go through it. If you put a small chair in front of something - even if there is a gap to go around, they won't. I knew I would have to train them to accept this screen - and that I did need to do. It took about 20 minutes for success: letting them see me walk in and out several times, then luring them with just my hand through the opening, with a treat - trying to entice their noses through; then a little more - more treats for each small step forward - until they did it on their own. Once they overcame their 'fears' they were so proud of themselves and used it regularly like it wasn't even there.

This product was great. Simple set up and install. I’m a single mom with two babies and I was able to do it solo. It worked great for the first month or so. And then out of nowhere the adhesive part fell off making the entire thing no longer usable :(
Didn’t experience any severe weather, hasn’t even rained recently. Thinking the heat and humidity may have had something to do with it. Or possibly too much use? I used a different company for my back patio door, and it has been solid. However, it is not passed through as frequently. Will probably purchase from them to replace this one, unless this company has a quick simple solution. I received so many compliments on the sleek appearance. Super bummed it did not hold up.

Easy to set up and very sturdy. I love opening the back door and windows when I cook to air out the room and this solved the problem for me cus we don’t have a trap door. It keeps all the Texas bugs out and great for cool and breezy days. We tucked it in at the top cus I got the measurements wrong but easy fix. The pins provided in the pack also came in handy to hold the top part firmly in place due to extreme winds and rains. Never came off after that which is a plus. Easy to open and closes right up after you and easy to clean too.

After reading the reviews, both good and bad...I bought this magnetic screen door. Using some soap and water, I cleaned the surface of the metal to attach the adhesive backed Velcro. After it dried well, the next day, I used rubbing alcohol and cotton balls to clean and remove any residual fingerprints, oil etc. I researched how to install and found out a slight rise in the center top of the screen as you apply to the top of the door frame creates the perfect pitch to snap those magnets together. So as you look at the door frame, measure the top area you have to apply the screen Velcro to attach. Apply the center first about 1/4”-1/2” higher than the rest of the top line sloping ever so gently toward the outside edge of the top. Place your Velcro along the sides straight down on both sides. The screen has the Velcro securely sewn on with neatly covered edges. Apply the screen first in the center of the top frame. Secure by pressing firmly. Then apply the sides pressing firmly all the way down.

I have used this screen door for my 8’ Anderson slider and it works better than the actual slider screen door. I have three very large GSDs who love the outdoors and chasing off squirrels. When the slider is open, if a squirrel or chipmunk appear on my deck, the 78# female and 85# and 107# males run full speed through that magnetic screen door and it snaps shut right behind them. On rare occasion, one flap hangs up on the electrical box beside the left portion of my door but honestly, this is one strong well made screen door. I love it and doing the research was worth all the effort. If this door is positioned correctly with a tiny pitch in the very center top, this is an absolute winner!!!! I will never have a sliding screen door again with my big dogs.

UPDATE 04/16/2024

After 4 years of having this screen up on my slider, an essential for having two large GSDs in northern Michigan, I finally had to replace the screen. I should add we have very cold winters with very low temperatures and gale force winds. Normally I take the screen down in winter but I decided to give an honest review, I should leave it up year round. I expected good results but truly nothing like I got. After 4 full years of hanging on my Anderson Metal frame slider doorway, I finally got a crack in the center of one side and because mosquitos up here along the Great Lakes are really the state bird, it had to be replaced. I searched my Amazon orders and was extremely shocked to find the date of May 2020 as date of installation. I knew it would be good but 4 years??? The winters are very harsh here and I have to restrain my deck yearly and everything has to be renewed. Rubbing Alcohol is perfect for degreasing the surface for best adhesion of the Velcro.

Replacing the magnetic screen door was so easy. I really didn’t have to replace the Velcro but I got new with the replacement door and I put it up exactly the same way as first. I sloped the sides down slightly from the center each way. I put the Velcro directly over some of the glue that I couldn’t get off the frame and it was still very VERY sticky. The dogs are so happy to have their old friend, the magnetic screen door from MAGZO back. They have made many trips in and out (testing the replacement door) even though it’s not warm enough outside to have the heat off in the house atm.

I sure hope everyone else has as wonderful experience as we have with this product. It IS the only magnetic screen door I will use for my dogs comfort and long lasting quality. Thank you MAGZO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Research how to apply to door frame/prep surface of frame
Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2020

We have 2 dogs and use this to let fresh air in but keep the bugs out. The dogs can easily nose open the magnetic strip so it works great for us. Would recommend! Had it about a year now and still works great and stays in place.

Have used a lot of different screens but dogs and grandkids were really hard on them. Finally found one that stands up to them! Excellent screen. Lov the extra Velcro locks for when it’s windy!

2.0 out of 5 stars Good product but with a very short life

Worked super well for about 3 months until it gradually got in worse and worse condition.
The Velcro does not stick to the wall/door very well, i had to nail it in so it would actually work, the pins it comes with are also useless.
I now have a torn up fly screen thing and about 70 holes around my door where i tried in vain to keep it attacked to the door frame.
Great idea but doesn't hold up very well for extended use.

Looks, i will give it this though, it did seriously reduce the amount of birds, flies and spiders in the house.

Measured exactly as they described and the screen fits perfectly. It was easy to install and, so far, we're very happy with it.
