The entire premise of this game revolves around Tim Goodman, a recent high school grad, looking for this missing detective father, Harry Goodman. When he first arrives to Ryme City, he runs into a curious Pikachu with whom he can communicate. Together with this Pikachu, Tim goes around Ryme City and its surroundings solving various Pokemon-related incidents, all while trying to determine the cause of his father's disappearance.
While this game is obviously geared towards children, the excellent script and voice acting makes it enjoyable for adults such as myself. The best aspect of this game is that it creates a completely believable world in which Pokemon and people coexist. Rather than focusing on the battling side of Pokemon, such as in the mangas or anime, this game relies on the day-to-day interactions between Pokemon and their partners. Yes, the people of this game aren't referred to as trainers, but rather, as partners. This creates a sense that these Pokemon and people exist for more than just battling.
Throughout the story, which is roughly 12-15 hours based on my personal gameplay, you run across various Pokemon from several generations. Ryme City is never placed in a particular region, and the balanced spread of Pokemon species from different games makes it difficult to place it on anywhere on the world map. In just the first chapter alone you run across 3-4 bird Pokemon from various generations living in just one place. It's great for longtime fans to see Pokemon from different games living in the same place.
And yes, the world is alive. As you play through the game world you will see various Pokemon fluttering or running about in the background. With Detective Pikachu (roll credits) as your partner, you can interact with nearly every Pokemon you see, allowing you a sense of immersion that was never offered before. As Tim, you also interact with the various people along the way, some of whom are interesting characters while other are more deceiving than others.
The gameplay itself is a very standard point and click adventure style detective game. If you've ever played Phoenix Wright, you will feel at home. Each chapter begins with a goal in mind, and the detective duo will travel to a unique location to start investigating. Along the way, you interrogate witnesses (both Pokemon and people) and inspect clues. Eventually, Detective Pikachu will prompt you to gather all of the evidence and testimonies to determine just what has occurred and who the culprit is.
Each chapter has more than one mystery, and each mystery intelligently leads into the next. While some of the plot points are very obvious, it's great to see how the developers used different Pokemon and their abilities or traits to tie into the plot. I don't want to say too much because of spoilers, but longtime fans of the franchise will definitely enjoy seeing the various unique traits of Pokemon used as plot devices.
I have yet to finish the game, but I can already tell this is a great choice for anyone who is a fan of Pokemon or for someone just looking to expand their 3DS library just a little bit more before the device is officially retired by Nintendo. I have played my fair share of spin-off Pokemon games, from the Ranger series to some of the Mystery Dungeons and this is by far the best spin-off I have ever played. Younger players will not find the game difficult, and the story is just so fun and well-written that older fans will enjoy it as well.
If I had to choose one negative about this game, it's that Detective Pikachu isn't voiced by Ryan Reynolds nor by anyone who sounds like him. This seems like a strange choice with the movie currently in development, but I'm sure the game voice was sorted out long before any casting for the movie was done.
What this game is not: This game is not challenging and won't take most people long to beat. I beat it in less than a week of very casual game play. Also, Pikachu is not your garden variety Pikachu, rather he's more of a middle aged sometimes grumpy man.
What this game is: I thought the game was very amusing and some of the Pika Prompts were hilarious. If you're really adventurous, pick up the Detective Pikachu Amiibo so you can see all of the Pika Prompts when you complete a chapter.
If you're looking for a serious game, this definitely isn't it. But if you're looking for a game with a decent story that you can easily learn and play for a few minutes a day and get a good laugh, then definitely give Detective Pikachu a try.
I cannot fault Nintendo since this is a very well designed game for its demographic. Pikachu is cute with his quality animations, deerstalker cap, and gruffly pompous detective attitude. About two and a half decades ago, I would have been delighted to spend a trip in the back seat of my family’s car playing this game. As it stands, I still appreciate the aesthetics and am curious about why Tim Goodman is able to understand Detective Pikachu. The game also establishes interesting themes early on about communication which would have been interesting to see how it was to develop. Sadly, I will not be able to play more than the 20 minutes I’ve invested as it was mind numbingly boring to anyone with fundamental abstract reasoning skills.
Granted, I am not the target audience for the game. In fact, while I'm quite familiar with Pokemon and especially Pikachu, I've never had any personal experience with them or him (video game, cards, etc) in any form. Basically, this my first go around actually utilizing game play with Pokemon and this pop culture icon, ever.
Overall, it's been a fun diversion; the graphics are whimsical and the cases are fairly easy to solve. The premise of click reading my way through the stages has its moments of amusing delight as the script flows as well as the linear game play. That said, I'm still keeping my expectations to a child-like level, and enjoying it for what its worth in the grand scheme of things.
Besides the straight-forward premise, I think the real selling point for the game itself is the fact this personable Pikachu has verbal punch, in that he talks in a witty, verbose way. While some people might find it grating as they keep playing, I feel long time fans will find it lovably weird to hear Pikachu mouth off as he's assisting with solving cases with Tim.
Not my usual cup of tea, but at my age anything is better than the usual stuff I see on the video game shelf; Detective Pikachu makes a great case for a good time to be had by all.
