There are several common mistakes I made in the past that may have helped. Here is my do's and don'ts
1. Do not oversaturate the sprouting media. Use a mister to wet the soil after expanding the pots and as needed to keep them moist.
2. Do not rely on natural light from a window as your light source. The "put in a windowsill" approach rarely works beyond an initial seed "pop." Get a full spectrum grow light and use 14+ hours of light.
3. Do research on your plants. Some seeds need to be scuffed with sand paper (hibiscus). Some seeds need to be hardened by refrigeration or freezing; milkweed germination goes from 20% to 80+% when properly hardened.
4. Do apply heat using a germination heating pad when needed. Hot peppers do well like this.
5. Do fertilize with a MILD fertilizer, I used clonex.
EDIT: A few years later I would actually say I like this coconut coir growing material more than other types of starter material. I haven't had issues with dampening off, and I grow many kinds of seeds from desert natives where just enough moisture is critical - too much and they die quickly, but in material like peat moss it dries out so much that it sucks the moisture out of the plant. It's also fairly eco-friendly.

The peat pellets? Terrible. I got a much lower seed sprout rate than I normally do, using the same brand and type of seeds I use every year.
When I went to transplant them the fiber covers around them are holding the roots in there, I already could see it wasn't going to go well putting them into the ground if the roots can't get out easily.
Then something about planting these fiber wrapped things attracted animals unlike just transplanting without the fiber. I have never had some animal dig up all my transplants and destroy them like this. And they only dug the ones with this fiber around them. I am crushed. Money on seeds and soil completely wasted and now it's too late to do anything about it.
