The previous vacuum was inexpensive and not very smart. It would rarely find the dock and constantly got stuck. With its lidar sensor, this ROBOROCK S8+ finds it's dock every time. I have asthma and a lot of allergies. The main reason for getting this vacuum was to have it run when I wasn't in the house and automatically dump without touching the dust bin. I can't take any of the dust that vacuums put into the air during use. We also have a lot of long pet hair from a constantly shedding German Shepherd. Sorry I don't have pictures of the very LONG dog hair that was constantly collecting on the floor in dog hair islands that would move around like big dust bunnies. Since using the ROBOROCK S8+, those are all gone. This robot is AMAZING for cleaning up all that dog hair and keeping the floor dust free.
I haven't used very many features yet, such as no go zones. I just leave all the doors open in our single floor residence. I pushed the on button and it took off, mapping the house and cleaning. I have it set for vacuum only with balanced suction. It gives an amazing number of options for type of cleaning and setting up cleaning schedules. They recommend 3 regular vacuums before using the mop feature. The little manual packaged with the robot is minimal. There is a great online page that covers the features and use. The app is one of the most useful product apps I've ever seen. So many options for creating different schedules to vac, vac and mop, and more. It has a DND do not disturb feature so it won't run when you are sleeping. That time is adjustable based on when you sleep, or you can disable it if you don't care when the vacuum runs. you can start it manually by pushing the power button, or start it from the app on your phone, or it can run off of schedules you program. I'm just using a once per day cleaning for now. The biggest part of this is keeping the daily dirt, pet hair, and dust cleaned up while I'm out of the house.
The volume isn't bad at all. It's much quieter than handheld vacuums, although it is VERY loud when it self dumps into the bag. It did put dust into the air when dumping, so I'm careful to stay out now until after it dumps. When it returns to the dock after cleaning, it dumps. It will also return to the dock if it gets full while cleaning, dump, and then resume cleaning. The bag is another great feature. It's a simple matter to switch out the full bag for an empty. I'm not sure how long it will take to fill the bag, but it's a huge convenience feature since I don't have to empty the dust bin on the robot after each use, or like the old robot during use. If the battery gets low during cleaning, it will go back and recharge, then continue cleaning until finished. In my case the battery charge still showed 77% on the app after a full cleaning of my house.
The dogs are afraid of the robot while it's running, just like they are afraid of the handheld vacuums. They hide in a different room while it is cleaning. The ROBOROCK S8+ is very gentle, and did not disturb the dog water or food dishes on the floor. I kept the power cords out of the way from computers and things in use, but otherwise, it cleaned around shoes and furniture, going partially under the sofa and bed. The is a spot clean feature which gets it to clean a small area thoroughly.
A real time map display shows on the phone app while Rosey is cleaning. (yes, we named it Rosey the Robot after the maid on the Jetsons cartoon series) The map can be used to set no go zones. It's an amazing map that shows everywhere Rosey cleaned or could not reach. The app also gives tips about cleaning the rollers and other features as needed.
I've only have it for 5 days, so I will update this review as I use more features or have issues. I'm looking forward to setting up the water tank and mopping, since that will help even more with my allergies and asthma. I'm so happy with the hands free features that keep me away from dust, dirt and hair!
I downloaded the Mi Home application from the Google Store and got things set up easily. I had no problems using the US server to find and add Hazel to my 2.4 GHz WiFi system.
After giving Hazel a full charge, and doing some minor pickup around the house, I turned her loose on the main floor. Floor plans show the main floor of my house is about 1100 square feet. It is about half tile and half low pile carpet with a couple of small somewhat thin traffic rugs.
As an Engineer, I was impressed with what I observed from the algorithms the device used to map, navigate, and escape tight places. I was mesmerized watching it's progress on the Mi Home application map as it cleaned. You could tell that it divided the area to be cleaned into about 3 meter or 10'x10' blocks. It would clean the perimeter first, and then systematically worked back and forth in rows within the block. For areas that didn't fit nicely in the row pattern, it would go back and finish them before moving on to the next block.
I followed Hazel around on her maiden voyage to check to see if there was anything that needed to be adjusted to make her job easier. To my surprise, there was not much to do besides some obvious things like pick up clothing, charging cords, and small toys left down by the grandkids. The tour was also helpful to make some minor adjustments. Hazel's laser detection system (LDS), scans at a distance of about 3.5" above the floor. Anything at that height, that the laser can bounce off of, will be seen as a obstacle or barrier. With this in mind, I have some floor length curtains that hang down to within an inch of the floor. While Hazel can clean next to them just fine, she thinks the pleats are a very bumpy wall. She will swivel quite a few times to be careful of them. The curtains have ties backs, so I use them before vacuuming, and Hazel zooms right along the wall now that the curtains are high enough not to be detected. I use the "Balanced" cleanup mode with the carpet mode turned on so that it goes up to maximum suction when a carpeted surface is detected. This appears to work very well.
I did notice towards the end of her maiden voyage that there were a few noticeable spots of specs and lint she did not entirely pick up. I was a little disappointed until I checked the dust bin when she finished. It was completely full and packed to the point of reducing the suction. Hazel does not have a full dust bin sensor. She will continue cleaning until she has covered the entire scheduled area. Now, after that first time of cleaning under beds and furniture that a normal vacuum can't get to, the dust bin doesn't quite get entirely full and the suction stays good.
While Hazel will clean around every chair leg to try and get every inch covered, we sometimes place the chairs upside down on the table to provide less obstacles for cleaning when company is expected.
I run Hazel about 3-4 times a week on the entire main floor with an additional 2 -3 times as a zone cleanup to police grandkid crumbs. She has used at most, 60% of her battery to clean my entire main floor when I had her on maximum suction. Your mileage may vary. She has never failed to make it back to the charger. Not only that, she appears to take a smart route back to it with no fussing around like she's looking for something in the dark.
Hazel has never gotten stuck with one exception. It was my fault. After many successful clean ups, we now trust Hazel to finish the entire floor while we are not there. One of these times she sent me a message on my phone that she was having some difficulty. Her laser system appeared to be jammed because she couldn't get any data on a path to proceed. She suggested I use a pencil to help the stuck LDS start spinning again. I was not home at the time, but I could see her present location on the map in the application. She was in our walk-in closet right where my wife had a couple of dresses hanging that almost touched the floor. I concluded that Hazel had driven between two of them that were very close together. The fabric moved and draped over the LDS totally blinding Hazel. I saw at the bottom of the map in the application there was a icon labeled "GO". I used this to place a point on the map about 2 to 3 feet from Hazel's currently shown location and told her to "go" there. She was able to proceed to that point and finish the rest of the scheduled cleaning. I noticed on the map that she carefully avoided the dresses on the subsequent passes that came near them. I was very happy to be able to assist Hazel from afar. Needless to say, now if we leave our walk-in closet door open and expect Hazel to clean it, we inspect for and move any very low hanging clothing.
Recently, the Mi Home application had a red dot in the settings next to an entry that let me know a new firmware update was available. After telling it to go ahead with the update, it took about 10 minutes or less with no further intervention from me. Both the application and Hazel told me when the update was finished. After the firmware update, the cleaning blocks appear to have been increased to about 4 meters square or about 13'x13'.
Hazel only has one rotating side brush on her right side as she is going forward. She also has just one side obstacle sensor on that same side. By design, her right side is always the one next to walls or going around obstructions such as chair legs, thus always sweeping the edge particles into the vacuum path.
Hazel is smart when tight areas or entanglement opportunities present themselves. She uses her sensors and bumper to cautiously test options to escape. Her spinning side brush has flexible arms and resists winding cords around it. I haven't witnessed it yet, but I have read where she will reverse the direction of the spin momentarily to attempt to untangle. Hazel is very careful. She works diligently at figuring out strange conditions. I have read reviews of other robot vacuums where faced with a difficult situation, they would stubbornly continue to spin their wheels until the battery died. One person reported that this behavior wore some grooves in their carpet. Some people have noted that Hazel doesn't go backward when she can no longer go forwards. She is blind going backwards. Her proximity sensor and bumper are on the front. Hazel will instead spin in place and face the next direction she would like to go moving forward. This is not unlike a human. Our sensors are also in front such as our eyes and outstretched arms. If we encounter a dead-end in a dimly lit hallway, we turn around to exit, not back our way back down the hall.
I have not used the mopping feature nor did I intend to when I made my purchase since I had 50% carpet. I didn't assume that the mopping function would be anything close to an actual scrubbing of the floors. I may try it as part of a zoned cleanup one day, but the vacuum does everything I wanted from it, so it is a feature I'm not worried about exploring. Instead, I use Hazel to police our tiled areas of any debris before we use our dedicated Hoover FloorMate to thoroughly scrub the tile.
This vacuum does not have Amazon Alexa support other than turning it on or off. I have installed the Smart Home Assistant software on one of my computers that is on all the time. With help from the Internet, I was able to link the Mi Vacuum control to my Alexa devices. I have now set up the Alexa routines:
"Alexa, start Hazel", "Alexa, pause Hazel", "Alexa, restart Hazel", "Alexa, where is Hazel", and "Alexa, tell Hazel to go home". While not the easiest thing for the average user to do, it does show it may be possible to add additional support for Alexa in future updates.
I highly recommend this smart cleaning assistant. While maybe not perfect, it appears to be the best blend of well thought out technology, cleaning ability, build quality, and value at the current time.
Hazel has earned her place as a live-in maid in this home.

I almost never write reviews, but this time it's so much worth it. I recently started to think that this is the best household purchase I've ever made in my entire life! It literally upgraded my quality of life!
Now, in my condo I have a BLACK hardwood floor and two cats. That's enough for the setting - you can imagine how bad it is. Cat hair and litter that they bring out on their paws is enough to require an everyday vacuuming. Now, after I got this robot - I.... haven't.... held..... a broom.... or my upright vacuum.... in my hands.... even once. This is insane! I just set it to vacuum every working day at 4pm, so when i come home - it's pristine clean!
Okay, chill. Let’s speak more objectively.
1. It’s damn smart. It gets trough even the tightest spaces of its own size 10/10 times. There has been 0 times that it didn’t get somewhere where I wanted it to go, provided that I removed large objects from the floor.
2. The carpet detection is awesome. It’s off by default, so make sure you enable it right away. What happens is whenever it finds itself on a carpet, it will automatically increase the suction.
3. The app is amazing. First of all, it draws a map of the cleaning area, and this map is very precise – you can tell where the tables, couches, etc. are located. You can use the app to schedule, change settings, draw and name areas on the map, set “don’t go” areas by drawing lines with your finger – it’s extremely convenient. If you suddenly realize that you’re brining somebody home after a party – just one click on the app to remotely send your vacuum to clean before your arrival.
4. It connects to Google Home (and Amazon, I guess). You can use commands like “Hey Google, start cleaning” or “Hey Google, send vacuum to dock” – haven’t discovered anything else.
5. The whole maintenance is emptying the dust bin, which is not big at all. Well, cleaning filters sometimes too, I guess.
6. Make sure that you remove “stringy” things like cords, any kind of ropes, pet toys, etc from the floor. If it finds one, it will most likely suck it in and get stuck. Other “classic” vacumm favorites should also be removed – clothes, small objects, etc.
7. It does get stuck sometimes. You’ll figure out its favorite places to do so, and can manage that. In my case it loved the leg of ironing board – would go over it with one side, and then get stuck. Other times it’s just if you left something on the floor, and it got sucked it, and blocked the brush – you’ll get notification on your phone either way.
8. Can’t speak about the mop attachment – haven’t used, don’t really care – it’s a bonus, not a necessity.
So as you may have figured out, it’s a 100% recommendation from me.
