The app works perfectly, and the mapping and zone cleaning is very detailed. It manages to work fine in my fairly thick carpet, even picking up objects. Review for hard floors
4/2/2019I am not getting paid for a review, I am just a random person trying to help others in their consideration of this product.First off, I primarily have hard floors, and that is what my Roborock S5 stays on 99% of the time. One thing to understand, these little vacuums are for maintaining floors, and are not made to handle heavy duty build up, sticky spills from juice or pop, or large chunks of food. They are meant to be used after a floor has been fully cleaned before first use and after it will keep your floors cleaned by taking care of the day to day use.I have 3 dogs in my house, as well as kids from age 2 and up. I always have a large amount of dog hair in my home and it's just impossible to keep up with. So I'm listing a few catagories on this review on what I've seen so far in the past few days I've had this. This is my own opinion and may not be the same as others' views.I received my Roborock S5 in quick order once purchased(2 days), in sparkling brand new order with not a thing wrong. It was a thing of beauty to look at. It was almost completely assembled once I pulled it out of the box, excluding the base needing to be set up and plugged in. With dogs, I worry that one of them may get at the vacuum, so I pulled out a drawer in the hallway and retrofit the floor with a ramp so it can be tucked into the wall with some protection. I did not give the vacuum the recommended 3 feet on either side, and even with a 1.5 inch ramp, it still manages to get in and out of the space just fine.Navigation: The Roborock S5 is a newer "smart navigation" vacuum that uses zig-zag patterns instead of the random navigation used in older or cheaper models. I have noticed that my S5 will split up each room in my house into sections that it will tackle in its own order, not necessarily what we think may be the best order. Example: The S5 will split my kitchen into 4 sections of cleaning, my living room into 3 sections, dining room into 3 sections, and hallway into 2 sections. Usually it cleans one hallway section first, then the kitchen in 3 sections, heads to the dining room to clean 2 sections, back to kitchen, finishes dining room, second hallway section, then living room. Seems odd, right? But I assure you, it cleans almost EVERYTHING. It picks up 95% of what is on the floors. It will start by going around the outside perimiter of a section first, then zig-zagging around the inside until that entire section is complete. It covers all of the floors and leaves nothing behind. I have noticed that the side brush spins at a faster rate on edges to help bring anything in the edges out, but slows down when not near an edge as to not fling debris everywhere. I love this type of navigation, where other vacuums have taken nearly 85 minutes to clean my house and not even gotten everything, the Roborock S5 does it in 40 minutes and gets it all, including edges and most corners.Bumping, close quarters and obstacles: This is one of my favorite things about this vacuum. The front bumper is a super sensitive, light touch bumper. 99% of the time when the S5 approaches a wall, chair leg, even a shoe, it will slow down to a crawl until it just barely touches the object, then it will stop and slightly change it's course to go around the object. I have seen it go along a wall, come to a closed door and turn into the threshhold, go along the door, and when it meets the wall it compensates and moves just enough to get along the wall to continue going straight. It usually stays within 1/2 inch while doing walls / edges which is more than enough to keep the side brush rolling against it. If it meets an object in the middle of the floor, it will go completely around it and maps it out, compensates for the object and continues on course. I have also seen this vacuum run full force into a slender table leg that it didn't detect so it could slow down, and the impact was trivial at best. It barely bumped it and stopped in its tracks. No big bang, no shaking or objects flying off a table, no damage to the table leg. (For pet owners) This robot has hit my dog's water bowl a dozen times and never so much as rippled the water. Never the less, may be best to place a barrier from the app to be safe.Note: While going around sharp corners and between obstacles, you may notice a ticking noise. This is from the side brush being a bit too close on a corner, however I haven't seen it to be a problem and there has been no damage to vacuum or objects from this yet. I personally won't worry about it.While the navigation is all good and well, some people wonder how loud this is. This vacuum has 4 power settings (5 if you include the mopping setting), Mop, Quiet, Balanced, Turbo, Max. I usually run mine on Balanced, since I have mostly hard floors and this setting still picks everything up perfectly. Quiet can sometimes be too weak to pick up everything well, and you tend to hear the brushes more. I can watch TV and have a conversation easily on Balanced. Turbo, and especially Max, do tend to be quite loud and not so great on hard floors as it'll blow debris around (namely hair) and those settings tend to do better on carpet. Videos tend to make the vacuum louder than it really is, I've found that it's much quieter in person.Another thing I've noticed this vacuum does that others have had a problem with, it will go on black rugs and carpet! I may have lucked out, or perhaps the company fixed it, but attached is a video of mine going on a black rug with no issues. I tested out the cliff sensors to make sure they function properly and they work just fine.Mopping: The Roborock S5 is equipped with a mopping function. I'm not particularly a fan of the mopping attachment, it has a water tank that has a pad on the bottom. I followed the directions and soaked the pad first, wrung it out until it did not drip, then attached it to the tank and filled it with water. While this did mop the floors, I don't feel it was very adequate. The mopping function is basically just dragging a pad around on the floor while keeping the pad wet from the tank. It won't scrub clean any sticky spills, and it even can leave some lighter things behind as well. Attached is a before and after picture of a coffee stain, showing that it cleaned most of the stain up, but left a bit behind. The vacuum suction does slow WAY down while mopping, and it is recommended to vacuum your floors first before mopping with this robot. It does, however, get the floors wet and I feel that it does a good job of taking any dust off the floor. Personally, I don't feel I will use this function much, as it's easier to mop myself, especially since I have kids that like to spill drinks or food everywhere. The App: This app, is by far one of the coolest and most helpful apps I have seen for a robot vacuum. It has a map right on the front page that will show a layout of your house, which is generated after the first full cleaning. You can put No-Go Zones, Barrier Tape, send it to a specific area for Zoned Cleanup, or send it to a specific area to do a spot cleaning! Spot cleaning is handy for dry spills such as crumbs, dry cereal, powder, etc. Starting from the center of the spill, the S5 will go around in widening circles until it has picked it all up! And since it has the map saved, it also has the docking base saved, with pin-point direction to get back to charge, even if it's across the house. The app has many many other functions, like instructional tutorial videos for cleaning and maintenance, but it also has an option for "Care", which is where you can see on a timer how much time is left before the recommended maintenance replacements and cleanings. I love this function, I don't have to worry anymore about forgetting to replace parts! You can also manually control the robot from the app with a "joystick" option and run it around like a remote control car.Battery: The battery on this thing is HUGE. It cleaned my house twice, running for 80 minutes total, and STILL had 61% battery left. The best guess I have, is that this robot can clean 2000 sq ft before recharging. The company claims the S5 can run 150 min on one charge, but I'm betting it could go longer on Quiet mode.Maintenance: So far I have not had the Roborock S5 long enough to do any replacements or even general cleaning much, however I do empty the dustbin and clean it, along with the side brush and the main brush after every use (you are not required to do this, I just do because I want to keep it as clean as possible) it is absurdly easy to take this thing apart and clean it, everything unsnaps and snaps together smoothly and with ease. If you ever need assistance, there are training videos located in the app!I do have some tips, and last experiences to share. Check your firmware and update it as soon as you get it. Do it while the vacuum is charging for the first time. It only takes about 10 minutes. When you first run this robot, let it do a complete and full cycle of cleaning, including going back to the dock to charge. I made the mistake of NOT waiting, and instead while it was completed and going back to dock, I decided to send it to a certain location. This erased the map and I had to run it again to generate a new map. After it completed fully, the map stayed and I had no issues with it disappearing again. If the vacuum is returning to dock, try not to pick it up and move it. While it may find its way back, it may also get "confused" and mess up the pathing to get back.If you decide to make a "hidey hole" like I did into a wall, try to make sure the floor is as level as possible. I took the easy route and made a ramp for the vacuum to climb into. This works, and it gets in and out just fine every time, however when it is cleaning the hallway that the ramp is located in, it will climb halfway onto the ramp while cleaning, and drop off the other side. While it is not doing any immediate damage, I do worry about the long term damage it may have. I will be fixing mine to have a flat, even entry immediately. While this vacuum may be able to get around in tight spaces, sometimes, it may be better not to. I have two recliners side by side, and two end tables next to them on either side. My robot will find it's way behind them and try to clean, but sometimes tends to get a bit hung up on the base of the chair sometimes. It always finds its way off, and comes out fine, but this is one of those cases where I will be taking advantage of no-go zones and barrier lines.Wrapping up, this vacuum is ABOVE and BEYOND better than most others, and it equals other vacuums that are hundreds of dollars more. While not being 100% perfect, I couldn't ask more of this little helper. It cleans amazingly well, the navigation is great, pathing out objects works excellently, it always finds its way back to the dock, has an awesome app, and so much more. Not to mention it distracts my toddler and she follows it all over the house (which is a nice reprieve for the wife and I). I highly recommend this vacuum to any and all. It may be more expensive than the more budget friendly vacuums, but it is so worth the money.I have not yet seen the longevity of the S5, but I look forward to finding out how it holds up in the long run, and will be listing updates in the future.UPDATE 4/11/19Still running great, no issues. If anything, there's been improvement. Cleaning time has reduced by 6 minutes. Can verify that it works like Alexa, however I have found its just to start and stop. Also, I have heard that starting the robot with Alexa will make it ignore barrier lines and no go zones, I can officially say that this is false. I start it with alexa every day and it still stays inside barrier lines. My house has never been so clean!

Roborock S8+ initial review is very good. While pricey, it is still less expensive than some of the more famous cleaning robots. The reviews, support, and customer satisfaction with Roborock are significantly higher than more expensive robot vacuums with fewer problem reviews, so I got this one. Thanks to everyone in previous reviews that recommended updating the software while it was getting the initial charge. That was very helpful, and gave time to review the features while it updated and charged. Mine updated the firmware/software 4 o 5 times before finishing. The updates completed in about 30 minutes, and I also downloaded the app.

The previous vacuum was inexpensive and not very smart. It would rarely find the dock and constantly got stuck. With its lidar sensor, this ROBOROCK S8+ finds it's dock every time. I have asthma and a lot of allergies. The main reason for getting this vacuum was to have it run when I wasn't in the house and automatically dump without touching the dust bin. I can't take any of the dust that vacuums put into the air during use. We also have a lot of long pet hair from a constantly shedding German Shepherd. Sorry I don't have pictures of the very LONG dog hair that was constantly collecting on the floor in dog hair islands that would move around like big dust bunnies. Since using the ROBOROCK S8+, those are all gone. This robot is AMAZING for cleaning up all that dog hair and keeping the floor dust free.

I haven't used very many features yet, such as no go zones. I just leave all the doors open in our single floor residence. I pushed the on button and it took off, mapping the house and cleaning. I have it set for vacuum only with balanced suction. It gives an amazing number of options for type of cleaning and setting up cleaning schedules. They recommend 3 regular vacuums before using the mop feature. The little manual packaged with the robot is minimal. There is a great online page that covers the features and use. The app is one of the most useful product apps I've ever seen. So many options for creating different schedules to vac, vac and mop, and more. It has a DND do not disturb feature so it won't run when you are sleeping. That time is adjustable based on when you sleep, or you can disable it if you don't care when the vacuum runs. you can start it manually by pushing the power button, or start it from the app on your phone, or it can run off of schedules you program. I'm just using a once per day cleaning for now. The biggest part of this is keeping the daily dirt, pet hair, and dust cleaned up while I'm out of the house.

The volume isn't bad at all. It's much quieter than handheld vacuums, although it is VERY loud when it self dumps into the bag. It did put dust into the air when dumping, so I'm careful to stay out now until after it dumps. When it returns to the dock after cleaning, it dumps. It will also return to the dock if it gets full while cleaning, dump, and then resume cleaning. The bag is another great feature. It's a simple matter to switch out the full bag for an empty. I'm not sure how long it will take to fill the bag, but it's a huge convenience feature since I don't have to empty the dust bin on the robot after each use, or like the old robot during use. If the battery gets low during cleaning, it will go back and recharge, then continue cleaning until finished. In my case the battery charge still showed 77% on the app after a full cleaning of my house.

The dogs are afraid of the robot while it's running, just like they are afraid of the handheld vacuums. They hide in a different room while it is cleaning. The ROBOROCK S8+ is very gentle, and did not disturb the dog water or food dishes on the floor. I kept the power cords out of the way from computers and things in use, but otherwise, it cleaned around shoes and furniture, going partially under the sofa and bed. The is a spot clean feature which gets it to clean a small area thoroughly.

A real time map display shows on the phone app while Rosey is cleaning. (yes, we named it Rosey the Robot after the maid on the Jetsons cartoon series) The map can be used to set no go zones. It's an amazing map that shows everywhere Rosey cleaned or could not reach. The app also gives tips about cleaning the rollers and other features as needed.

I've only have it for 5 days, so I will update this review as I use more features or have issues. I'm looking forward to setting up the water tank and mopping, since that will help even more with my allergies and asthma. I'm so happy with the hands free features that keep me away from dust, dirt and hair!

This is my first robot vacuum cleaner. We have named it Hazel after the maid on the old TV series by the same name. I did a lot of research before I made my purchase and it paid off. This machine has met all of my expectations. I was able to wait and buy the second generation US version sold by the manufacturer, Roborock, here on Amazon. That meant no European power plug, no Chinese manual, no connection issues, and a 1 year manufacturer warrantee supported here in the US.

I downloaded the Mi Home application from the Google Store and got things set up easily. I had no problems using the US server to find and add Hazel to my 2.4 GHz WiFi system.

After giving Hazel a full charge, and doing some minor pickup around the house, I turned her loose on the main floor. Floor plans show the main floor of my house is about 1100 square feet. It is about half tile and half low pile carpet with a couple of small somewhat thin traffic rugs.

As an Engineer, I was impressed with what I observed from the algorithms the device used to map, navigate, and escape tight places. I was mesmerized watching it's progress on the Mi Home application map as it cleaned. You could tell that it divided the area to be cleaned into about 3 meter or 10'x10' blocks. It would clean the perimeter first, and then systematically worked back and forth in rows within the block. For areas that didn't fit nicely in the row pattern, it would go back and finish them before moving on to the next block.

I followed Hazel around on her maiden voyage to check to see if there was anything that needed to be adjusted to make her job easier. To my surprise, there was not much to do besides some obvious things like pick up clothing, charging cords, and small toys left down by the grandkids. The tour was also helpful to make some minor adjustments. Hazel's laser detection system (LDS), scans at a distance of about 3.5" above the floor. Anything at that height, that the laser can bounce off of, will be seen as a obstacle or barrier. With this in mind, I have some floor length curtains that hang down to within an inch of the floor. While Hazel can clean next to them just fine, she thinks the pleats are a very bumpy wall. She will swivel quite a few times to be careful of them. The curtains have ties backs, so I use them before vacuuming, and Hazel zooms right along the wall now that the curtains are high enough not to be detected. I use the "Balanced" cleanup mode with the carpet mode turned on so that it goes up to maximum suction when a carpeted surface is detected. This appears to work very well.

I did notice towards the end of her maiden voyage that there were a few noticeable spots of specs and lint she did not entirely pick up. I was a little disappointed until I checked the dust bin when she finished. It was completely full and packed to the point of reducing the suction. Hazel does not have a full dust bin sensor. She will continue cleaning until she has covered the entire scheduled area. Now, after that first time of cleaning under beds and furniture that a normal vacuum can't get to, the dust bin doesn't quite get entirely full and the suction stays good.

While Hazel will clean around every chair leg to try and get every inch covered, we sometimes place the chairs upside down on the table to provide less obstacles for cleaning when company is expected.

I run Hazel about 3-4 times a week on the entire main floor with an additional 2 -3 times as a zone cleanup to police grandkid crumbs. She has used at most, 60% of her battery to clean my entire main floor when I had her on maximum suction. Your mileage may vary. She has never failed to make it back to the charger. Not only that, she appears to take a smart route back to it with no fussing around like she's looking for something in the dark.

Hazel has never gotten stuck with one exception. It was my fault. After many successful clean ups, we now trust Hazel to finish the entire floor while we are not there. One of these times she sent me a message on my phone that she was having some difficulty. Her laser system appeared to be jammed because she couldn't get any data on a path to proceed. She suggested I use a pencil to help the stuck LDS start spinning again. I was not home at the time, but I could see her present location on the map in the application. She was in our walk-in closet right where my wife had a couple of dresses hanging that almost touched the floor. I concluded that Hazel had driven between two of them that were very close together. The fabric moved and draped over the LDS totally blinding Hazel. I saw at the bottom of the map in the application there was a icon labeled "GO". I used this to place a point on the map about 2 to 3 feet from Hazel's currently shown location and told her to "go" there. She was able to proceed to that point and finish the rest of the scheduled cleaning. I noticed on the map that she carefully avoided the dresses on the subsequent passes that came near them. I was very happy to be able to assist Hazel from afar. Needless to say, now if we leave our walk-in closet door open and expect Hazel to clean it, we inspect for and move any very low hanging clothing.

Recently, the Mi Home application had a red dot in the settings next to an entry that let me know a new firmware update was available. After telling it to go ahead with the update, it took about 10 minutes or less with no further intervention from me. Both the application and Hazel told me when the update was finished. After the firmware update, the cleaning blocks appear to have been increased to about 4 meters square or about 13'x13'.

Hazel only has one rotating side brush on her right side as she is going forward. She also has just one side obstacle sensor on that same side. By design, her right side is always the one next to walls or going around obstructions such as chair legs, thus always sweeping the edge particles into the vacuum path.

Hazel is smart when tight areas or entanglement opportunities present themselves. She uses her sensors and bumper to cautiously test options to escape. Her spinning side brush has flexible arms and resists winding cords around it. I haven't witnessed it yet, but I have read where she will reverse the direction of the spin momentarily to attempt to untangle. Hazel is very careful. She works diligently at figuring out strange conditions. I have read reviews of other robot vacuums where faced with a difficult situation, they would stubbornly continue to spin their wheels until the battery died. One person reported that this behavior wore some grooves in their carpet. Some people have noted that Hazel doesn't go backward when she can no longer go forwards. She is blind going backwards. Her proximity sensor and bumper are on the front. Hazel will instead spin in place and face the next direction she would like to go moving forward. This is not unlike a human. Our sensors are also in front such as our eyes and outstretched arms. If we encounter a dead-end in a dimly lit hallway, we turn around to exit, not back our way back down the hall.

I have not used the mopping feature nor did I intend to when I made my purchase since I had 50% carpet. I didn't assume that the mopping function would be anything close to an actual scrubbing of the floors. I may try it as part of a zoned cleanup one day, but the vacuum does everything I wanted from it, so it is a feature I'm not worried about exploring. Instead, I use Hazel to police our tiled areas of any debris before we use our dedicated Hoover FloorMate to thoroughly scrub the tile.

This vacuum does not have Amazon Alexa support other than turning it on or off. I have installed the Smart Home Assistant software on one of my computers that is on all the time. With help from the Internet, I was able to link the Mi Vacuum control to my Alexa devices. I have now set up the Alexa routines:
"Alexa, start Hazel", "Alexa, pause Hazel", "Alexa, restart Hazel", "Alexa, where is Hazel", and "Alexa, tell Hazel to go home". While not the easiest thing for the average user to do, it does show it may be possible to add additional support for Alexa in future updates.

I highly recommend this smart cleaning assistant. While maybe not perfect, it appears to be the best blend of well thought out technology, cleaning ability, build quality, and value at the current time.

Hazel has earned her place as a live-in maid in this home.

5.0 out of 5 stars I named it Raccoon (cause it loves garbage)

Let's start with the bad - my only regret is that I haven't bought this earlier. That's it. (Well, also the fact that it costs 50% of NA price in Europe, and they already have the s6 model, eh?)
I almost never write reviews, but this time it's so much worth it. I recently started to think that this is the best household purchase I've ever made in my entire life! It literally upgraded my quality of life!
Now, in my condo I have a BLACK hardwood floor and two cats. That's enough for the setting - you can imagine how bad it is. Cat hair and litter that they bring out on their paws is enough to require an everyday vacuuming. Now, after I got this robot - I.... haven't.... held..... a broom.... or my upright vacuum.... in my hands.... even once. This is insane! I just set it to vacuum every working day at 4pm, so when i come home - it's pristine clean!
Okay, chill. Let’s speak more objectively.
1. It’s damn smart. It gets trough even the tightest spaces of its own size 10/10 times. There has been 0 times that it didn’t get somewhere where I wanted it to go, provided that I removed large objects from the floor.
2. The carpet detection is awesome. It’s off by default, so make sure you enable it right away. What happens is whenever it finds itself on a carpet, it will automatically increase the suction.
3. The app is amazing. First of all, it draws a map of the cleaning area, and this map is very precise – you can tell where the tables, couches, etc. are located. You can use the app to schedule, change settings, draw and name areas on the map, set “don’t go” areas by drawing lines with your finger – it’s extremely convenient. If you suddenly realize that you’re brining somebody home after a party – just one click on the app to remotely send your vacuum to clean before your arrival.
4. It connects to Google Home (and Amazon, I guess). You can use commands like “Hey Google, start cleaning” or “Hey Google, send vacuum to dock” – haven’t discovered anything else.
5. The whole maintenance is emptying the dust bin, which is not big at all. Well, cleaning filters sometimes too, I guess.
6. Make sure that you remove “stringy” things like cords, any kind of ropes, pet toys, etc from the floor. If it finds one, it will most likely suck it in and get stuck. Other “classic” vacumm favorites should also be removed – clothes, small objects, etc.
7. It does get stuck sometimes. You’ll figure out its favorite places to do so, and can manage that. In my case it loved the leg of ironing board – would go over it with one side, and then get stuck. Other times it’s just if you left something on the floor, and it got sucked it, and blocked the brush – you’ll get notification on your phone either way.
8. Can’t speak about the mop attachment – haven’t used, don’t really care – it’s a bonus, not a necessity.

So as you may have figured out, it’s a 100% recommendation from me.
