After 6 months of loving my floors, I decided that I would hire someone to clean the floors vs. the usual cleaning crew (me). BIG mistake. The company that came in, that despite glowing reviews, left my floors a mess. Basically, they brought in a "professional" mopper who basically pushed dirty water around on my floors (and subsequently white grout lines) and their "cleaning" left my floors dingy looking and terrible.
So . . . I went on a quest to find a steamer/mop/cleaner that could help me do the cleaning vs. getting on my 61 year old knees to do same.
Started off big and $$$$ with the "Seahawk steamer vacuum and extractor" from the Allergy Buyers Club. Nice looking vacuum. Big hype on performance. Meh. Left dirty water on my floor. Vacuum wasn't powerful enough. Found myself going behind it with paper towels to get it to a "moist" condition vs. water sitting on floor that would never dry. Great machine for "cleaning" floors that are already "cleaned". Returned it.
Next up: Bissell CrossWave Pet Pro Floor and Carpet Cleaner With Wet-Dry Vacuum. Sort of the same situation . . . . more water on the floor than the vacuum picking up. Getting closer, but not quite.
So . . . then I ordered the Bissell Spinwave, 2307 Cordless Hard Mop, Wood Floor Cleaner and Buffer.
What I like:
1. You have control over the amount of water that is on the floor with the manual sprayer. The manual states that water cannot exceed 140 degrees F . . . so I heat up water to 138 degrees (use a thermometer to confirm) and pour that into the mop to use with my cleaning solution. I use the Black Diamond Marble & Tile for cleaning and Weiman Stone & Tile for polishing. Read instructions for water/cleaner ratio.
2. This item - fully charged - lasts over an hour. The manual states 20 minutes. Mine goes 200% longer than that. The unit I have charges in less than an hour.
3. Pads are easily mounted and easily removable.
I developed a system for my floors. Since they hadn't been cleaned (vacuumed yes, but not really scrubbed clean) for more than 2 years . . . I ordered 3 boxes of back up cleaning pads . . . which gives me 8 total.
Vacuumed the area to be cleaned.
Started with one set of pads . . . used the solution of heated water/cleaner to do 1 pass of a 10' x 40' section. Removed those pads and attached the 2nd set. Did 2nd pass over the same area with the solution of heated water/cleaner. Removed those pads and attached the 3rd set. Allowed the floor to dry (took maybe 10 minutes).
1st and 2nd passes got the 2 years of dirt off. 3rd pass is for buffing. Did that over the same section with the Weimans product. Next week . . . I will work on another section until the entirety of the marble and/or slate floors are cleaned.
Sounds like a lot of work . . . . and it is. But this mop makes it so much easier. It applies medium pressure. And . . . if there happened to be a stain or something on the floor (1 spot where someone brought more dirt in) . . . I would just hover over that area a while longer and it would be cleaned. While this item doesn't specifically scrub the grout lines . . . it also doesn't allow dirty water to sit in the grout lines. So . . happy medium.
Now that my floors are "clean" . . . maintaining them with this mop is almost enjoyable.
Plan is to professionally buff them (after cleaning) every quarter with the new Hover Pro Buffer I just purchased. Haven't tried it yet . . . but look forward to it.
All in all . . . for the price . . . this product was exactly what I wanted. While everyone has their own standards for why they do or do not like a product . . . this one works for me.
Well, I was pleasantly surprised... it has a good solid feel and weight overall, with obvious attention to details.
I plugged it in to charge a bit, then gave it a spin (no pun intended). For the initial test, I chose a constant challenge in our home: we have dogs, and they tend to drop saliva around their beds and in a line to the doors and their food dishes. I don’t know why, but their saliva is some sort of glue-like substance... it attracts dirt and requires dedicated scrubbing with my hand mop whenever I clean it up. Seriously... I have to scrub each spot a dozen times to get rid of it.
Well this mop removed the spots in seconds. I was ecstatic, and started following their paths and mopping every spot I saw, laughing maniacally. This is EXACTLY what I was hoping for, but after the vacuum experience I was expecting the worst. After I had finished with the spots I thought it best to stop and let the mop continue charging. I pulled off the pads and was SHOCKED to see the dirt that was lifted... just with the default soft pads. The floors looked and felt great – no streaks, swirls or cloudiness.
I’ve noticed some comments here discussing cloudiness and swirls, etc. I’d like to suggest that it’s probably not the mop’s fault – more likely, it’s your choice of soap combined with your type of floor finish. For most modern floors, you can make a great cleaner by adding denatured alcohol (Klean Strip at Home Depot – they call it fuel, but it’s denatured wood alcohol) to hot water, along with a few drops or so of dawn dishwashing detergent. Make sure you use the hottest tap water you can get from your faucet. This simple mix should do a great job of cleaning and not leave any residue. It should evaporate quickly too.
If you’ve used any kind of “wax” (which is typically an acrylic, not a wax these days) on your floor, you’ll likely get some cloudiness and/or swirl marks. That’s not the result of this or any other mop – it’s from previous coatings on your floor. If you have an old house (1940s or before) you might have a true wax finish, and water is not the way to clean it.
Most modern manufactured flooring is prefinished. This type of flooring, along with solid wood floors with a polyurethane finish, should be simply washed and not waxed. I personally prefer oil-based polyurethane finishes for floors, but water-based is more common these days (and all that can be used in some parts of the country). Unless you’re using true steam, hot water shouldn’t affect a water-based polyurethane.
If your floor has lost its shine, it’s likely due to wear. You can re-apply a thin fresh layer of polyurethane after scuffing up the existing finish with a scotch-bright pad, but it takes some practice to feather and blend it into the existing finish. An easier alternative is Minwax Floor Reviver, which is a modified polyurethane, but it doesn't last very long. Just don’t use a “wax” (i.e., acrylic) product like Mop-n-Glo or others – acrylic simply isn’t tough enough to last on a floor, and it yellows and gets dingy over time.
So back to the Bissell – all in all, it seems like a great device. I expect the batteries to drain quickly, but since it’s an 18 volt system I’m planning to modify the thing to accept my Milwaukee 18 volt batteries from my various tools – if this had swappable batteries it would be near perfect. I’ll also keep an eye on the bottom pad screws, and maybe try using some red thread lock on them, although I’m not sure how well it works on plastic.
All in all, the first impression was a great one... I will certainly update this review as time goes on.
UPDATE:
Well sure enough, one screw on the bottom has already loosened... time to try some red threadlocker (it comes in red and blue – the red is more secure, which I think would be a good choice for plastic).
One important note is that the screws tighten in opposite directions – one tightens normally (clockwise) but the other tightens counter-clockwise.
Finally, if you're into modifying your tools and want a swappable battery system for this mop, I found a small receptacle for Milwaukee batteries on eBay (you can find them for other brands as well). About $22, and should be pretty easy to mount and hook up to the motor. Keep in mind any tool battery you might use should be 18v, and any adapter you choose should have 12ga wire or thicker (note that as the gauge number goes up the wire is thinner, not thicker, so 18ga is thinner than 12ga).
Still loving the thing though – it gets the floors notably cleaner than my hand mop.
