Pros:
Being somewhat of a collector, I was impressed with the build quality and professional setup of this guitar.
The professional luthier setup on this guitar is something you normally have to do yourself after buying even a top name brand expensive guitar in most cases, and can easily cost as much as $250 (US). This is a unique selling point for Orangewood guitars that sets them apart from everyone else.
Easy to play. I have never purchased a guitar with this amount of attention or effort placed on the setup and tweaking done to the guitar before. The action was set much lower than most off the shelf guitars, making it extremely easy to play. No problems with fret sprout. The guitar carry bag it ships in is a lot thicker and more protective than most. Beautiful full sounding acoustic guitar. Quality stain finish.
Better than most higher priced Brand names. Really impressed with the neck and fretwork on these guitars.
Hold tune, no slippage.
Cons: Extremely thin top which adds to the sound and tone trades off stiffness of the top to support the tension of the strings on the bridge. Even though there is a support insert under the bridge, the string tension may cause a slight belly bulge just below the bridge.
Shipping: Orangewood ships directly from their facility in California. These guitars are not sold through distributors, so you can't walk in and try one out before purchase. Mine arrived with the Orangewood shipping box torn open and crushed to the shape of the guitar from every angle. Needless to say, my heart dropped a beat when I saw this, but the padding of the soft carry case seemed to be enough to protect the guitar. There was a small smudge mark on the face of the guitar that was easily polished out. This is a shipper problem and not really Orangewoods fault. This was also during the pandemic so....
The guitar ships with standard steel strings. On replacement of the strings I noticed ALL the tuning peg nuts were floppy loose. OOPS. Missed in setup?
This guitar has no pickup. But this you clearly knew at purchase. There is the next model up that has a great pickup and is still worth the price.
Sound quality: This guitar is not a Martin, nor even a budget Fender or Yamaha. It has weak sustain and a bit of a flat tone. There's not a lot of resonance or brightness in its sound, and it doesn't have a lot of volume or projection (which is good for my needs!) I would not record with this guitar nor perform with it except maybe at a house party. However it is perfectly fine for a bedroom practice guitar, and for $139 I am not mad about it. You get what you pay for, and I'm honestly very happy with the sound for this price.
Build quality: This what I was most worried about for a budget guitar, but I have not been disappointed. The fretboard is smooth and the fret ends are all rounded off and flush with the wood. The edges of the sound hole have been sanded and the trim around the body is neat enough. The satin finish looks fine and is comfortable enough when playing. The bridge and the nut are fine. I did not have any issues with broken struts or shipping damage as some reviewers have had, but that's just luck of the draw. The pick guard that came with it feels cheap and flimsy, but I'm not using it so... Overall, I have seen worse built guitars for $300, so for the price this is fantastic.
Playability: is ok, the neck is a little thin for my taste. I would prefer a bit more of a pronounced C curve. My hand gets tired quickly when playing barre cords, which I feel would be less of an issue with a thicker neck. It is what it is though. The action height was fine out of the box, and I haven't had any noticeable fret buzz. My only major complaint is that the tuners are a bit iffy, which is probably unavoidable at this price point.
Extras: It comes with a gig bag! Pretty decent one too.
This guitar is perfect for a cheap practice guitar or a beater. It's ok for a beginner on a budget, but I would recommend spending more if possible, since the flat, dull tone might not inspire a joy for playing the way a nicer instrument might. But I cannot imagine finding a better guitar for under $150. Value for the money is 10/10
