This machine is a terrific upgrade in the MFC series. At a great price, it does everything an all-in-one should do perfectly. Built-in two sided printing is a bonus, and the machine is quiet and very efficient. For example, I'm really impressed with the quality of Fast Print/Draft printing considering the small amount of ink it uses. Setup was extremely easy, and right out of the box I found it ready to rightfully take the place of it's predecessor. I expect, based on my first month's use, that this machine will be everything I anticipate it to be. I downloaded the user manual and keep it on my desktop for reference, and in the few instances I've had to use it, I found it to be clear and straightforward.
The basic fact is, this is a great, versatile machine for less than $100 ($95.00 when I purchased it). I expect a similar 8 year life that I got from the 490, and I will update this review if that turns out to not be the case.
Update: After 5 months, the scanner function is not working well at all. Photos are all scanning darker than they should (much darker than the originals), and after many hours with chat and customer service, they decided to replace my machine with a refurbished one. I'm disappointed because I haven't used the scanning function that much, and now when I need it, it cannot accurately scan photos.

However, installing and setting up this printer was a bit complicated and confusing. I do not have a CD-ROM on my PC and Brother did provide instruction on how to install via their website. It seemed simple enough, where it took a left turn was getting it connected to my WiFi. Setting up on the printer was simple but it continued to say during the installation on my PC that my device (printer) could not be found. I retried twice and finally resulted to selecting the second option of attempting to install by other means. In the middle of this second way a get a pop up that reads along the line of does your device state WiFi was successfully connected, if so check this box. So I think okay great it's going back to simply well then I get another window pop up that states failed to connect/failed to find device. Click okay. I start reading on the main installation page if your device has not popped up here, click here. My device was not listed so I select click here and once the new window pops up I see the printer name pop up in the background. So I exit from the new window to return to the main installation page again. Select my device and continue to follow the instructions. Go through the remaining of the pages and get a pop up window that states connecting device was not successful. Click out and on main page it states installation successful. It was so contradictory and confusing, but it indeed connected. And to find the device in order to install it was confusing as well.
I still cannot wait to put it to use. I'm hoping for a great product vs. their installation process. I'll update if there are any problems I run into. I did print a few test pages and the ink is definitely fine and clear so far.
