    Terrible photo scanner
    3 Stars
    Terrible photo scanner
I've been using this for close to a year to print and scan documents and it works really well for this. The page feeder on top isn't perfect but it's better than all the others I've ever used. With others I've often had trouble where it pulls multiple pages at once and so skips some pages but this one almost never does this. The print quality is excellent especially in the vivid color mode. That said, I've recently tried to use the scanner to digitize some old photographs and a couple of other types of non-documents. The results are terrible and unacceptable. In all the cases the issue appears to be that the image being scanned has a glossy (i.e. shiny) finish. I expect this category would cover most or all photographs plus anything else (including documents) that are printed on a surface that is more reflective than a standard piece of paper. What happens is that while the image does scan the results are just unacceptably poor. The image is much darker than it should be and is also grainy and distorted in ways that are difficult to described. I've uploaded a comparison image with this review which I think illustrates the issue. I contacted Brother's support about this but they were unhelpful telling me to trying to turn up the brightness and adjust settings which I had already tried. Increasing the brightness helps but its still too dark and it doesn't do anything about the distortions. While I would describe their scanning software as pretty well designed and user-friendly its almost too simplified. Previous scanners I've owned have always had a photo-specific settings or a dedicated mode for scanning photos which this one lacks. There's also no option for photos sizes (e.g 4x6) so I scan everything as "Letter" which results in white space around it which has to be manually cropped.I don't think the issue is my computer either because I get identical results and the same difficulties if I scan directly on the unit using an SD card rather than through the scanning software. It just seems like it's simply not designed to handle anything other than printed documents and so maybe shouldn't be expected to work for this. It would have been nice if this was more apparent before I bought it but either way, my expectations for basically any scanner on the market these days it that it ought to be able to scan simple photographs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Setup and Great Versatility
Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2019
I owned a Brother MFC-490CW all-in-one for many years, and I used (and abused) it far beyond the amount of production that anyone should ever expect from a small home office inkjet printer. The few times I had to call customer service, everyone I worked with was great and very helpful. The machine printed as many as 700 pages a month for almost 8 years. When it finally gave out, I made the mistake of replacing it with an HP all-in-one that was on sale at Costco. What a disaster that turned out to be. Complicated setup, horrible customer service and complete machine failure in less than 30 days. I returned it and purchased this Brother machine at Amazon (on sale) in it's place. It's a move I should have initially done.

This machine is a terrific upgrade in the MFC series. At a great price, it does everything an all-in-one should do perfectly. Built-in two sided printing is a bonus, and the machine is quiet and very efficient. For example, I'm really impressed with the quality of Fast Print/Draft printing considering the small amount of ink it uses. Setup was extremely easy, and right out of the box I found it ready to rightfully take the place of it's predecessor. I expect, based on my first month's use, that this machine will be everything I anticipate it to be. I downloaded the user manual and keep it on my desktop for reference, and in the few instances I've had to use it, I found it to be clear and straightforward.

The basic fact is, this is a great, versatile machine for less than $100 ($95.00 when I purchased it). I expect a similar 8 year life that I got from the 490, and I will update this review if that turns out to not be the case.

Update: After 5 months, the scanner function is not working well at all. Photos are all scanning darker than they should (much darker than the originals), and after many hours with chat and customer service, they decided to replace my machine with a refurbished one. I'm disappointed because I haven't used the scanning function that much, and now when I need it, it cannot accurately scan photos.
