Setting that aside this is a monster pc, with perfomance to the extreem. You get the full gtx 1060 experience with good thermals for the perfomance it gives at max cpu capacity.
This comes at a small acoustic sacrifice-fans get noticable when gaming heavy titles. But your temps will max 85 degrees "no undervoling" this is better than my other counterpart laptops that go 98 on full load. Keyboard is beautiful, but the rgb is fixed in zones . The monitor is soooooo good, the best for quality colors and perfect viewing angles +its 144hz panel ,yes not 60 not 120 but 144hz. You can never go wrong. It's a little on the heavy side but not as heavy as some similar class laptops. Aw. For the price, you are making a good choice. And the future is bright for you as you have thunderbolt 3, for future gpu hookup., incase gtx 1060 goes young., your cpu, I can say it still has 10 years, . So for a desktop replacement this is great, much better than actual desktop for my liking,. Hope this helps.
Fast: 8th gen i7 and the 1060 do the job well. you won't find any lag - no disappointment in this area
Superb connectivity - Seamless, no dropping of connection
Screen: 144 HZ - refresh rate is as good as it gets.
I bought it at $ 1319. Good performance for the price so far no issues in terms of the hardware. Will get rid of McAfee soon.
I use iobit malware and windows defender is already preloaded in the system.
CONS:
This thing is big and heavy. trust me you can feel the weight. Not something to carry around often. The charger is the size of a small tablet.
Considering the hardware, it heats up fast. Fan speeds are not adjustable. You use microsoft word/ excel and watch a movie, this thing hits 94 degrees celsius. Gaming and this thing will hit the roof. You can tone down the GPU....But that's not why i bought this comp. Invest in a good cooling pad - I feel this is a MUST.
Speakers are Not great.. Didn't expect that and i use earphones most times or a bluetooth connected speaker.
Its a finger print magnet.
Its been 10 days only. Will update on how long this thing lasts
Update 5/4/2019: I tried to upgrade the tiny OEM boot drive to a bigger SSD. At 128GB, and with the Windows OS alone taking up 80GB+, the original SSD made it impossible to install the one AAA game (BF1) I bought this laptop to be able to run well in the first place.
The back cover was fairly convenient to remove. Fit and finish on the case are excellent. After removing the 10 holding screws, the cover snapped out of place crisply and easily with a little encouragement from a small flat-bladed screwdriver. Went back on snappily too. Some YouTubers with this model have also used guitar picks or credit cards to take the back off after unscrewing.
Unfortunately, I found that HP decided to attach the screw that holds the SSD boot drive in place so insanely tightly (why???!!) that it was IMPOSSIBLE to get it to budge with anything in my PC tool kit. I ended up breaking a good screwdriver (!!!) trying to unscrew it. Now I'm going to have to take the laptop to a repair shop, pay extra, and lose the use of it for several days, just to achieve something that should've taken five minutes and a few turns of a screwdriver to complete.
While inside, I made the unpleasant discovery that the cooling tubes are apparently made of aluminum or other cheap material instead of copper. They were painted black, which is what manufacturers often do to conceal the fact that they aren't copper. This means I won't be able to repaste with liquid metal, which is corrosive to cheap cooling tubes that aren't copper.
So far CPU temps under gaming have been maxing at 91°C and are usually around 75-86°C. GPU quite a bit cooler, in the 60s. While not optimal, these are acceptable, and a non-conductive repaste should be sufficient to get temps down to safer levels.
The monitor is absolutely outstanding. Picture is clear, sharp, and vivid. Colors are bright, warm, and full, neither too washed out nor too garish. The antiglare coating is a huge difference over my last laptop, and makes it so much easier to see details well in brightly-lit spaces. I haven't experienced any eyestrain even after a few 10-hour gaming sessions. HP definitely hit a home run with this monitor.
Speed is amazing, I'll give it that. I easily get 144 fps on medium/high graphics settings in BF1. Gameplay is butter-smooth with only a very occasional stutter. For me, the installed GTX 1060 card is actually a plus, especially with its generous 6 GBs of DDR5 RAM (earlier runs of the GTX 1060 only got 3), since it delivers acceptable performance while generating much less heat than the newer generations. With laptops, anything you can do to avoid overheating is a plus, and will prolong the life of your machine appreciably. I care about speed and performance much more than picture-perfect graphics.
Final verdict: I've owned PCs and laptops since the mid-90s, and I've never had a machine that gave me this many problems while simply trying to get it to do what it was designed to do. Including the days-long nightmare of trying to get the WiFi to work, I would not have bought this laptop if I'd known how much trouble it was going to give me. I've got too much time and effort invested in it now to return it, and it does run games outstandingly well after I've more or less whipped it into shape, so I'm reasonably satisfied if not exactly ecstatic about my purchase.
Will also run any emulators like PCSX2 PS2 emulator or Dolphin Nintendo emulator on high settings and while recording no problem.
Blender rendering and video editing is also fast. For anything you want to do under 4k or 1440p this thing can tackle any games you want to stream or record with OBS in 1080p 60 FPS on ultra settings.
Also feels reliably built, it has some heft to it. I got the 17 inch GTX 1060 and it's definitely not light. I had an Asus ROG before this and would recommend this. Cheaper than an MSI or Asus ROG with same specs but with the same quality.
