I just received this trap last night (got it in one day!), so I haven't used it yet, but I'm impressed with what I see so far. The instructions are well written with photos and they provide instructions on baiting and relocating as well as suggestions to ensure success. I tested it to see if it would spring and it works fine. It's nice and light weight and perfect size.
I was planning on using the trap immediately upon arrival; however, my little rat friend hasn't been around in a couple of days. Maybe that's all I had to do---come up with a plan to deal with him and he would go away. I live in a condo located on a canyon so my community gets all kind of critters including coyotes (residents have finally learned to keep their cats indoors). I have 2 bird feeders attached to my dining room window, which overlooks my patio and provides me with hours of bird watching entertainment. I get up to 16 Mourning Doves and countless House Finches, Juncos and Song Sparrows visiting the feeders. With this much bird activity there are always seed hulls all over the patio, so I sweep my patio at least 4 times a day. Of course, I remove the seed trays at sunset and do a final sweep so as not to attract mice and rats. I reinsert the feed trays into the feeders at sunrise. All my planters are placed on wheeled trays for movability. One afternoon, I noticed a rat peeking out from under one of my planters. Actually he was pretty darned cute (I'm sure some who read this will be disgusted that I could think a rat is cute). I tapped on the window and he ran away. I was surprised since I assumed they only came out at night. The next morning I found rat droppings on the patio. After thoroughly checking the patio floor after each sweeping interval, I determined that he is coming sometime between sunrise and 8 am. (at least that's when he's pooping).
I hope that I don't have to use this trap at all, but if more rat evidence appears, I'll set it up. My hope is that he'll come by at night because my concern is that if I set it up during the morning, one of the birds may get trapped.
I will update my review with the results of actually using the trap, but I thought I'd at least offer an initial review of the quality.
My home has become invaded by chipmunks once Spring hit. They chewed holes through my cement steps, dug holes all over my yard & dug up all through flower bed. I tried the Chipinator which was $42.99 but they would work their way back through the doors they entered. Well I found this cage & it’s GENIUS!! The cage comes with easy instructions on setting it up. I set up in 2 minutes. Within less than 10 minutes the cage caught a chipmunk & 20 minutes later #2 was caught!! It’s truly amazing. I sprinkle sunflower seeds inside & they go right in. Once caught they definitely want out asap so if you’re going to set it up I’d be prepared to stand & watch if you do have a lot of chippers because they are attracted to this cage quickly. It’s made of sturdy steel but if one is left in for a long period of time they may chew their way out. If they can chew through my cement steps they could chew through this so I’d suggest being swift & get them out. This cage was SO worth what I paid. I have chipmunk problems in the front & back of my house. I’ve already ordered a second. What I also like is there’s a YouTube video showing you how to set it up if you need guidance. I so very much recommend this! One by one this cage will take my chipmunks away. Well I’ll be carrying it away far far away from my house! 10 stars!! Highly recommend!!

It worked really well.
The squirrels are smallish, the trap is fairly small.
I have a couple of these traps. The triangular bar attached to the front door not only sets the trap but it acts as a carrying handle when tripped. No worries about getting scratched or bitten, just pick it up and carry it, you can even open the door for releasing without worrying about getting scratched. After you use it a few times you'll see how easy it is to handle. I also spray painted them camo style with black and dark green to blend in better with the outdoors and they work just as well, scents do not matter, just rinse them once in awhile or when dirty. After two years they have they finally worn down enough to require new ones. Although the aluminum feels light, it is sturdy and can take a good beating and biting without getting holes. The trick to making them last is to not leave anything trapped in them for too long. Placing a towel completely over the trap will quiet and calm down whatever is inside.
The main intention was to trap rats, but squirrels can't resist them either with a couple of fresh shelled peanuts stuffed into the back. I only set them out when I'm around as lots of little birds and even medium sized Scrub Jays and Steller's Jays have mistakenly gotten into these. All the jays are pretty smart though, once they see one of their mates stuck in one they won't go into them again trying to nab that peanut. Just open the front door and set them free. Despite being accidentally trapped the jays still come back to the yard for games of peanut fetch. Rodents on the other hand will go after a fresh shelled peanut time and time again, just find the areas they visit or their pathways and place a trap securely in that area. Be sure to check your local and state laws about what you can and can't do with what's caught, in or on your property. Relocation rules can vary as well as what's considered a nuisance, and what you can do. Some animals also handle relocations better than others. Good luck.
