So frustrating
1 Star
So frustrating
We had off-brand versions of robot vacuum cleaners for several years and they did okay, but we finally decided to bite the bullet and go with the official big-brand name, the best of the best in the robot vacuum business, Roomba. Unfortunately, this was a mistake. I didn't think it was possible to have such a frustrating experience with a vacuum. Even when this thing is working perfectly, it doesn't seem to do as good of a job as my other cheap vacuums did in the past. He can barely pick up crumbs in my kitchen, and usually just spreads them around and tosses them into new places. The mopping function on it is a joke. It would be more effective to just tie a damp paper towel to the back of the thing and let it run around for an hour and a half. But then, less than a month into using it, I start getting notifications that my scheduled cleaning job completed 2 seconds after starting (see screenshot). This happened several times a week for several weeks and I finally reached out to customer service about it. They put me through several painful weeks of trying every possible resest/restart/reprogramming imaginable and the problem still kept coming back. Eventually I convinced them to send me a new one, as I was convinced that I had received a lemon. Got the new product and set it up, and everything seemed fine... When not TWO WEEKS LATER it started happening again!!! I've been hesitant to even reach out to customer service this time, because I don't want to go through the painful and lengthy troubleshooting process all over again. I just want my money back so I can go buy one of those trusty non-name-brand vacuums again!

Vaccum: Mapped entire first floor after two runs, map surprisingly accurate. Having the map means you can designate rooms or areas to clean. I divided my large living room into three "rooms" so I can clean specific sections more often than others. Zones work great (i.e., an "avoid" zone around wires). I brought the vac to a different floor and it recognized that, and made a second map for the floor on its own.
I have a large dog that sheds a LOT and I run this every morning in the room where he spends the most time, and most other rooms several times a week. Unlike my previous dumb robovac, which pingponged around the house aimlessly, cleaning the same areas over and over until it ran out of battery, and getting stuck in my barstools every time, this robovac goes straight to the area you select, cleans in straight lines, works the perimeter, then returns to base. Never gets stuck. You can tell it to clean several rooms in any order you want, or clean "all." I didn't get the smart base because I read that it got clogged with pet hair, the bags seemed expensive, and I figure I'd be emptying it almost as often, anyway, with all the hair. My pet hair load means I have to empty the dust bin after every room or two, but that's not exactly onerous. TBH, it's kind of satisfying to empty out the bin and see how much hair it picked up. If we didn't have pet hair, the dust bin would probably suffice for the whole house (2000 sf) or more.
I have wood floors with a few short-pile rugs. Cleans the wood floors great and the carpets ok. Only complaint is that it's too tall to get under my particular kitchen cabinets so I don't use it in kitchen. The app is great. Alexa commands are inconvenient because it's a whole conversation ("Do you want to start the mop afterward?") and then it usually has some kind of communication issue and I end up grabbing the phone anyway. But the app is easy and you can make favorites so it's just a tap or two to get regular jobs going. This is a sanity saver for me because pet hair drives me mad. In some ways, it vacuums better than a big vac because it really gets under the furniture. However, if the mom-in-law is coming over, might want to pull out the big vac and get in the crevices that this can't get to.The battery life is good and it will vacuum most of the main floor (about 1400 sf) before giving out. Unfortunately, doesn't save enough juice to get back to base (poops out about 15 feet from base) so it doesn't re-charge and resume vacuuming as advertised. Not a problem for me since I tend to vacuum the house piecemeal anyway. I bought it on sale (altho not as cheap as it got before Christmas) and it's worth it.
The robomop is a different story. I bought the two bundled. It's true that you can set the mop to start when the vac finishes. HOWEVER, the vac & mop do not share mapping. The mop has to do several runs of its own to make its own map. It will have different "rooms" unless you take a lot of care to ensure everything is exactly the same as the vaccum. And if you create a zone on one ((say, for a Christmas tree) you have to go to the other one and put it on there in exactly the same way. And here's the big problem: if you tell the vac to do Room 1 and the mop to start afterward, the mop doesn't recognize that the vac only did Room 1, and the mop cleans the entire house, not just Room 1. So the "mop after" feature is useless unless you vacuum the whole house first and you want the whole house mopped. Maybe there's a way to do this but I couldn't figure it out. Also, the iRobot floor cleaner, which they say is the only cleaner you can use, leaves streaks on hardwood floors. As other reviewers noted, water does better. So you are limited to water and like to use products that make my wood floors glow. Plus, this mop takes forever and doesn't get up dried on food or other hard stains. And for some reason, my mop doesn't recognize that I put the "wet mop pad" on it, and will only offer to "dry mop" , which is what, exactly? I haven't bothered to try to fix it. Plus, you have to put on the mopping pad and fill the reservoir with water every time. Easier, faster and better to just grab my Bona mop with its great hardwood floor cleaner and make a pass over my floors from time to time. To be fair, the robomop might work better for someone who works away from home and can schedule the vacuum and mop to run while they're gone, and then come home to clean floors. And when I have used it, it does make the floors appreciably cleaner than just vacuuming.

I LOVE my roomba, its so helpful roomba starts cleaning and does a very good job it has a mop function which makes it even better. It has a powerful vacuum suction but if you have a lot of hair you will need to clean the rudders every so often because the hair gets tangled up and can slow its functions. You can program it to clean in certain areas you want to focus on. It has really big monster wheels so it came drive over many things. I highly recommend this product, I was very hesitant at first but I decided to get it and it has been very helpful to have around the floors are always clean now.

I purchased a RoboRock S5 and a Roomba i7 and I've used them both for about 6 weeks. Bottom line: They are both good products, but the RoboRock edges out the Roomba, mainly because the Roomba requires more frequent emptying of the waste container.

Sensing & Navigation: Both products use Simultaneous Localization and Mapping algorithms. It is amazing to me that you can get this in a consumer product at this price point these days. Anyhow, the RoboRock builds its maps using a spinning laser sensor (kind of like a radar), while Roomba uses a video camera. In terms of product reliability (and I can imagine this being debated at iRobot) the video method is better because it is simpler. The spinning laser requires an additional motor, and perhaps a more complex sensor, while the video camera is a simple off the shelf proven technology. It is actually much more challenging in software to solve this problem with vision than it is with the laser, so credit to iRobot for attempting it. However, the camera doesn't work well in the dark, you have to turn the lights on or run it during the day. Qualitatively, it seems to me that the Roomba gets lost more often, while the RoboRock steers crisply and drives in straight lines. Overall, the spinning laser is just the better technology for this application.

Mapping & App: Both products come with a smartphone app. Neither one of them is very good, to be honest. Fortunately, my graduate degree in CS equipped me with necessary insights to work with them.

The Roomba App is slightly more intuitive (slightly). The basic idea is that you run the robot a few times, and it builds a map, which you can inspect. If something goes wrong, however (and it did for me), you have to completely wipe the map and start over. I tried to "teach" it by constraining it to a few rooms, making it learn them well, then allowing it into the other rooms. This approach failed miserably. Start over again... Eventually it learned an OK map. Once you have the map you can direct the Roomba to clean specific rooms individually and set up a schedule. It is obvious to me that the Roomba app was written by CS nerds: The map is "symbolic" and aims to divide the space into individual rooms.

The RoboRock approach is much more "engineered." It simply displays the output of the laser radar, registered to the inferred location. One cool feature is that you can watch it map, sense its environment, and it displays the trail of its current mission. The RoboRock doesn't attempt to split the map into rooms, but it does allow you to set virtual boundaries and to direct it to clean specific areas.

Both robots return to their home base reliably. Neither of them gets stuck too much.

Cleaning: Both robots clean well, no complaints. In my case I only have hard floors, so I can't comment on their ability to clean carpet. I speculate that the Roomba might do better in this regard because it has two brushes on the bottom, while the RoboRock only has one.

Waste bin: My big complaint for the Roomba, is that its bin is ALWAYS full. Every time I direct it to clean, it stops about half way through and complains that it is full. Yes, I've changed the filter, washed out the bin, etc, etc. On the other hand, the RoboRock can go for several runs before requiring it to be emptied. When you look at dirt path and mechanisms for the two, it seems clear that the RoboRock is better designed.

Bottom line: RoboRock wins.

I have a husky mix dog and she is a super shedder. I have to sweep up the large clumps, but I had to do this with a regular vacuum. I love that I can run it from anywhere. I do have to empty the bin a few times but again I had to do this with my other canister vacuum. The scrubbing feature is amazing. Would 100% recommend this. I do not have any doggie wolverines tumbling around the floor.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok vaccum; bad combo

I really wanted to like this thing, especially considering we already had a roomba 600 series and the braava jet 240 (tiny one), but like most generalists, this does neither thing better than those that specialize in it. The only real saving grace is the smart mapping feature and camera for obstacle avoidance; I have only once had to rescue it from getting "stuck" midway through a cleaning job, but I bought this to be as good or better than the separate mop and vaccum we already had, but it fails to be better than either. Crumbs and other scraps are regularly left behind after it claims to have finished cleaning, and the mop leaves obvious smears of food like soy sauce completely intact. If you want a robovac with smart mapping and decent obstacle avoidance then maybe you could still consider this, but if you want a vaccum/mop combo I'd either buy them separately or consider a different model; this one isn't worth it even on sale.

The camera is great to avoid objects, but this system requieres well-lite rooms which restricts cleaning hours specially in winter
