One concern I found out later after the install is batteries and cold weather. Apparently these batteries need to be removed, warmed the charged. They will not trickle charge when the temperature is below 34 degrees as well the same warning for those that have extreme temperatures as they will not charge and may shut down in direct sunlight with temperatures over 105 F.
The battery lasts a long time before needing to be charged. I've had it for over a month already and I'm still on my original charge. I ordered a spare battery so that when I need to charge it I can just switch them out and not have to worry about interruption in service. The battery charges with a regular phone charger so it's easy and convenient.
My only complaint with the ring doorbell is that in my situation the motion detection is almost too good. I live in a townhouse that is only about 15-20 ft from the street so anytime a car drives by or someone walks down the sidewalk, it triggers my camera. In the settings there is the ability to adjust the field of view slightly but it hasn't been enough to avoid the false alarms. I dont really fault the product for this. It's doing what it's meant to do. Just keep that in mind if you intend on using it in a high traffic area like I do. Other than that, I've been very happy with it and I'm glad I got it.
But.. there are some things you need to think about and be honest with yourself:
If you are short on patience or basic, BASIC I said, tool handling skills, get a pro to install this.
If you think you are smarter than the easy to understand enclosed directions, get a pro to install this.
If you get frustrated when the device fails to set up like you think it should the first time, get a pro to install this.
If on the other hand, you are handy, patient, follow directions well and know how to lay out and identify all the parts and extras for any self contained project, you will have no problem.
All the screws are self tapping, You don't need a drill motor. There is at least one extra screw in every size. All parts are plainly labelled and separated into individual packets. There is even a screwdriver with a flip bit ( for the security screw on the bottom of the battery) included. All electrical parts are included right down to the flat terminals for existing door bell connections. Advantage: the battery still needs to be installed, but it is not necessary to remove and charge it. All directions are clear, concise and easy to follow. Do so in sequence outlined in the booklet. The 5 minute install is optimistic. Reading the directions completely through first, properly dry fitting things, adjusting elevations and angles, final attachments, and web setup will take at least an hour. Mine took about 4 hours but there were existing circumstances unrelated to a clean install. The app is a little buggy, but they are working on it, and the Ring unit needs a clear shot at the wireless router/gateway/hotspot or there will be latency issues. If your install is in an older building, lead paint, foil-backed insulation in walls, tile walls, brick walls, plaster and lathe walls, foamed concrete siding or anything but sheetrock walls and plastic plumbing, there will be connectivity and latency issues to some extent. The wireless signal needs to be strong, and the source needs to be relatively close to the Ring unit for optimum performance. Even with a clear shot, distance and bandwidth will dictate your efficiency. Everyone watching YouTube, facetiming, downloading movies, Amazon Prime will use bandwidth and lots of it. Adjust accordingly for best performance. My Ring is at the end of a 30 foot entrance way with 3 single walls and a half bath between it and the router and I have no problems until everyone gets home and the iPhones, iPads, MacBooks and a TV in every room but the bathrooms come on. Then, there is a little latency problem, but we are at the long end of a DSL, and everyone upstream is doing the same thing at about the same time. Still, the Ring hasn't missed anything completely, its just a little slow on the draw those times.
For the price and capability, regular updates and know issues addressed, I like it.
