A while back I checked out a few models in a sporting goods store and noticed the Schwinn ellipticals seemed to have a nice stride and seemed sturdier than the other models within the under 1k price range. No matter what machine you buy, it's going to be bulky and in the way, so it might as well be sturdy. Many "economical" home use ellipticals have a really short stride that make my knees and shins hurt, seem flimsy, and many of them have super low weight limits which make them limiting if you share them with others or ever need to re-sell them due to a move, etc... My gym preferences are the cybex and the elliptical the precor rear drive elliptical. This model seems to resemble those machines to me in terms of how I feel when I work out. I gave this five stars with the knowledge that this is NOT supposed the kind of high-end machine you'd find at the gym that usually cost several thousand dollars. This is a home-use piece of equipment, so it won't have a fancy computerized touch-screen display. I DO notice that you can step off the machine for a few seconds and grab a bottle of water without it "timing out" on you, which I think is great, and I also love the little fan the display comes with. It's very easy to set a phone/ipad/drink /towel on the machine while working out.
I'm a short small-statured woman. I was able to assemble this myself within a few hours, although it was a bit difficult at times. I have a big bruise on my big toe to prove it. (You might want to wear heavy boots while putting it together!) It's not super lightweight, so I'd recommend assembling it in the room you plan to keep it in. If you have someone to help you, I'd recommend having a second person on hand to assist sliding the pedals on and to help keep the display in place while you screw it in. When sliding the handle bars onto the machine, I wished I had access to a pair of stronger arms, but I still managed. I think the hardest part was placing the pedals on because you need to have them at the perfect angle to slide them onto the machine. Don't discard any plastic wrap with lubricant, because you might need it when you assemble certain pieces. You don't have to be a part time handyman to put this together-- just keep the nuts and bolts in orderly piles and make sure you use the correct ones. You can still manage to assemble this on your own as long as you can follow instructions to a T, don't mind cursing a bit, have some pillows handy, and don't have to move the largest piece onto a different floor in the house. Having wood floors I was able to push the biggest piece into the room I wanted to assemble it in. Although it was a pain, I'm glad I assembled it on my own, as I imagine if something "goes wrong" I'll be able to pinpoint the issue in the future.
The machine is super quiet and it comes with the adapter so you can plug it into the wall. Keeping certain components lubricated and free of dust will probably help avoid any squeaks or weird noises, but that's why cleaning people who work at the gym constantly vacuum and clean off the equipment. I imagine if you don't follow the assembly instructions perfectly, and don't tighten the bolts perfectly, you might have noise problems. The machine rocked and jiggled a little at first, but I realized I had accidentally omitted the washers when I screwed on the display. I popped the top off, unscrewed that part and fixed the problem, and now it doesn't rock or jiggle at all. Follow the instructions to a T. Keep the instructions and tools and leftover nuts and bolts.
The only weird issue I've noticed is that the calorie counter seems really off-- it seems to underestimate the amount of calories burned considering how much I'm exerting myself. This sets my OCD off a little, however, I notice that many kinds of extremely expensive cardio equipment in the gym will give me different numbers. The experience I have while I'm exercising leads me to believe that I'm still getting a great workout even without the calorie count being precise-- even with the resistance level and incline fairly low, it doesn't feel "too easy". I also feel no bizarre aches and pains as I would with a badly functioning/designed elliptical.
The design of the handlebars is great in that shorter folks can easily grasp them because the center parts of the handles curve inwards toward the user. Ellipticals you find at the gym often have handle bars often seem poorly designed for people with shorter arms. I can easily grab these without leaning forward too much. I'm 5'3", so slightly smaller than the average woman. I can't answer for how well a tall person would like the design, but the weight limit seems higher than many home style ellipticals and the foot pedals seem large enough to handle a person with a large footprint. Like I said before, the stride length seems much better than most home ellipticals. If you're super tall, you might want to get the more expensive models that have longer than a 20" stride. If you're tall, I'd check out the reviews of other tall folks before making a final decision.
Edit: It's been a year since I bought this, and haven't had any major issues yet. Biggest gripe is that the calorie counter seems to underestimate the workout I feel I'm doing. I wish the stride were longer, but as it's not one of those industrial grade machines, I wasn't expecting it to be great. I definitely suggest remembering to grease the components periodically, and making sure you vacuum the machine to remove dust.
Edit: I really hope they “fix” the low calorie count issue so many people point out. I’m drenched in sweat, on here for almost an hour, and have only burned about 300 calories? Makes me feel like a loser and a failure, because I’ve drank two bottles of water already and I feel like I can’t push any fügtet. On the expensive gym elliptical machines, I would have been past 500 calories burnt by now for the sweat and soreness I feel.
It's quiet enough. If you get a little squeeking, then clean the rails and lightly lubricate with silicone like the maintenance instructions say. You have to do this fairly regularly and it will stay quiet.
It has a nice little ledge on top of the screen which holds a tablet for watching movies. That's a must-have for me.
Early on a part seemed to break. I called; they promptly sent an entire arm replacement at no cost to me. Installing that I discovered that I probably originally installed it poorly with a small misalignment, causing it to break. I should have had to pay for that piece, but I didn't. That's really good customer service. Everything has been fine since then for over two years.
When they say it's easy to assemble, that's absolutely true. I did it myself (albeit making the mistake mentioned above which was totally my fault), and believe me, if I can do it, anyone can (my family claims that I'm dangerous with a screwdriver in my hand).
Highly recommended.
There are a lot of reports of these units breaking after a period of time. I don't know if they've beefed up the product with the 2017 revision, but if this thing breaks it's likely from bad welds, or maybe someone using it who weighs over 300 pounds. The design seems very sturdy.
As to use, I'm early on, but you can adjust both resistance and incline either by pushing an up/down button or by hitting five buttons for each option. So if you want resistance at 5 and incline at 20, you can hit the 5 and 20 button, or two different "up" buttons repeatedly. There are also several pre-programed courses you can set up. The display is relatively clear, but if you put a tablet in place it will block the upper portion of the screen.
The console also has a built-in fan (three speeds) and speakers, as well as a USB and audio input connection (with supplied cable). One thing slightly annoying is the first push of the fan button puts in on high. It will also save data for four different users. It will connect to an Android device with the Schwinn Trainer app, which syncs the data from the machine. Not sure how useful that is, but the journal portion of that app does track your use. Finally, the console turns off automatically after five minutes of non-use.
As to use, again I'm early on, but I'm surprised how smoothly the unit operates, both at a steady state and with changes to resistance or incline. Those changes also do not result in any extra noises during the change. The one bad thing is the static heart beat sensor system does not work terribly well. I've ordered a chest strap and will report on how that works later. Finally, I'm in fairly good shape but find this thing can provide a rather good workout even at the less than half settings.
9/28/18: A few more comments. I would highly recommend getting a heartbeat sensor because the effort you can expend on this thing is greater than what you'd realize. I bought the Polar T31 non-coded and it works fine, although sometimes intermittently. That may be due to having my tablet on the console. Which leads to the next issue.
Electronic devices on the left side of the console block the heartbeat monitor reception. That is in the manual. It means I have to have my tablet in portrait mode--not a huge deal, but a minor annoyance. It also blocks the upper display, but if you use the "edit lower display" function you can have it always display the information you are most interested in. Which leads to the next issue.
The mileage readout is apparently affected by the intensity of resistance, which doesn't make much sense. But going 100 strokes at the 1 level have you going less far than 100 strokes at level 5. I don't really care about distance, and go more by time and heartbeat, but for those who do . . ..
10/18/18: Still no issues with unwanted noises. I had planned on re-tightening the bolts at some point, but have had no reason to do so to date. The blockage of the heartbeat monitor is a bit more severe than I first indicated--basically if you want to use a wireless heartbeat monitor don't plan on having anything sitting on the console. But again I would highly recommend getting such a device because it is way too easy to overexert yourself with this device. Finally, it is amazing how with regular use you can see your progress by way of increased resistenace or incline settings. Much better exercise than just walking.
Edit 11/29/18. I've been using this about 5 hours a week for over two months and still no issues. Occasionally there will be an unusual noise, but those have always gone away after less than 5 minutes. There have been no creaking noises from the frame, nor have I felt the need to retighten any connections. I've quit using a table in any location on the display because it does affect the wireless heart monitor. Not the biggest problem because I now keep the tablet in a higher location so that my head isn't bent down so much.
5/10/19: Just making a note of when I'm cutting back my usage. I've been using this virtually every day until now, about 5 hours a week. I'm going to cut back to 4 days a week, about 3.5 hours. I'm heading into the summer months and even with AC that might be tough to keep up since the room faces east. Still no issue with excessive noise, but I did discover that if you don't oil the rails enough it will make noise.
3/15/20: The device did start making noise at times so I checked the tightness of the various connections. The four bolts that connect to two of the pipes on the floor had come not loose, but looser than what I had them torqued to originally. Tightening eliminated the noise. I've also switched from the oil provided for the rails to white lithium grease. I switched merely because I ran out of the provided oil, but the WLG seems to work longer between applications. The main negative is the fan has made noise about three times. Turning it off obviously stopped the noise, but when it was turned back on the next day it did not come back. These incidents were about a month apart.

I went through the assembly videos, when I was notified that the package has shipped and was prepared for assembly. I am quite handy with my projects (medium to high) and had a Power Driver, Allen Key driver set, sockets ready. The package itself is heavy, two people dropped it off on my porch and I took it part by part to my basement. All necessary hand tools comes along with the product, but using the driver surely speeded things up.
Now some quick numbers as there were a number of questions regarding the height of the product. I have installed it in my basement that has a ceiling height of 7’6” (7 feet 6 inches) and I am 5'10". The product works perfect for me with ample of clearance even when I have got it inclined it to 100% (20 degree).
Assembly itself took me about 2 hours with the power tools, I used a YouTube video + the provided manual to go through the assembly. It was straight forward and did it all myself, except for Step 3, where the console mast is attached to the flywheel part. Attaching the wire alignment right was tricky - where my wife helped me out. But, if you are alone, with a little bit of work you can do this single handed. 95% of the screws use the Allen Key, expect for one which attaches the handle bar which uses the socket set.
The elliptical uses a rubber wheel that strides over the striding rod, to generate the movement. This wheel was making a squeaking noise when I was using it. On closer inspection, I noted that the rubber was spalling and called the customer service and informed them of the problem. They immediately placed an order and I got a set of new rubber wheels delivered within two weeks. Now, I also lubricated the striding rod with the provided silicon oil and saw that the squeaking noise vanished. So, I realized it needed some lubrication and I have kept the new rubber rollers that I have received as spare because I can see the existing roller already spalling from friction.
Overall happy with the product, built and customer service, would definitely recommend it. There is an app called “Explore the world” which connects with the elliptical, this is helpful in transferring the run data so we have a look. There is a premium version which provides more locations, but I was happy with the free version, as I use it more for data transfer rather than the city/trail view itself. I am not a big fan of app based workout sessions such as Pelton (which are more pricier), so this product was a good value for money for my needs.
