We have a 2005 Ford Expedition with a hard to use aftermarket radio.
We needed:
• Good and reliable BT hands free operation with both Microsoft Windows and Apple iphone.
• Backup camera viewing
• GPS capability*
• Good stereo with CD and MP3 capability
• Mechanical fit for our 2005 Ford Expedition
We wanted:
• Clean and easy to use interface
• Embedded GPS with traffic integration
• To spend no more than $500
After trying, and being dis-satisfied with several other brands and models, I made the following observations
1) Good, embedded GPS that includes traffic integration is a $500+ cost adder. (All)
2) Most units did not support reliable BT operation with a Windows based phone. (JVC, Blaupunkt)
3) Some units would not fit well (mechanically) into available 2 DIN adapter face plates that are sold for our 2005 Expedition. (Pumpkin and Pioneer)
I was about to give up, when it occurred to me that maybe we would be better off finding a unit that had everything EXCEPT embedded GPS. One that would link BT audio with our smartphones, and use the guidance apps that we already have on our phones. Considering that smartphone guidance apps (with exception of screen size) are generally superior to those embedded in head units, and that those apps are being incrementally improved at no cost to the user, and that map updates are free. It started to seem like a good idea to look for a head unit sans embedded GPS.
Lo and behold, when I changed my search criteria I found the Kenwood DDX23BT for under $200!
It fit perfectly, gives crystal clear BT operation, works great with both Windows* and iphone GPS and BT phone functions.
I am super happy with this solution…
Here’s my summary of pros and cons. Note that my list of CONs is pretty long. Keep in mind that most of the items in the PRO column are much more important to me than the items in the CON column. The CONs are generally nit-picky wants vs. my more particular needs.
PRO
• Direct and accurate fit with METRA 2DIN adapter into our 2005 Ford Expedition
• Excellent BT interface. Always a reliable and clear connection. Easy to pair Windows and iphone devices.
• Easy to use interface with large icons and touch screen operation
• Great automatic back-up camera operation with easy to use “drive viewing” function. (Great when hauling a trailer and you want to see what’s going on back there.
• Excellent sound and microphone configurability. Allows you to optimize for your vehicle and setup.
• Looks good. Not a lot of fluff and flashing or color shifting lighting to distract you from actually driving your vehicle…. Some of the units I tried looked like a circus in our dashboard.
• Auto dimmer function for when headlights are turned on.
• Integrates seamlessly with smartphone for GPS guidance. Plays voice commands clearly through just front, or all speakers… your choice.
• GREAT value at under $200 !
CONS
• No mute button? This is curious to me as every other radio I tried had a single push on/off mute button. Pretty handy when pulling up to the fast food service window… Curiously lacking on this radio.
• About 5 to 10 seconds after starting the vehicle, the sound level increases significantly. No idea why. I looked for a firmware update that might fix this and did not find any.
• BT Phone search function is weak. Only searches on first letter, and is very slow to respond.. Flashed a “wait” message even when just trying to scroll. Too slow to be useful.
• *Does not support Windows Cortana voice command functions.
• User interface graphics are not my favorite. I prefer simple button icons vs. what look like pencil sketches. Just my preference.
• Okay… this is SUPER minor… but here it is. The lighting of the HOME button at night does not illuminate the “ME”… so all you see is “HO”.
(I am hoping that a firmware update with knock some of the items off of the CON list)
All said and done, I am very happy with the performance and value of this product. It does everything that I need, most everything that I want… and at a great price point.
Nicely done Kenwood!
A great radio Not really for a camper but will work and sound great. Plus it has dvd which is what I originally needed to replace my old unit with.
