This game is the lego version of the Harry Potter movies as Harry goes from starting Hogwarts to defeating Voldemort.
GAMEPLAY
Usual Lego style game, Smash things, build things, and grab coins complete story line levels, do side mission puzzles and buy characters, and abilities. This is a super easy mindless game and fun using magic powers.
CONTROLS
Pretty easy to control as long as you know what magic power you are trying to use for what game purpose. Otherwise, bust everything you see and build things is a great way to get coins and find secrets, and LEGO games always have secret stuff.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
I love this game. This is the best of the LEGO video game series - hands down. I think I have played them all and this one is the only one that playing it again is just as enjoyable as the first time. The game is flat out entertaining from the cut scenes and the characters and the design of the game to mirror the movies with getting abilities by going to classes at Hogwarts. I own this game on Xbox 360 and now Xbox One. This game is great playing with a kid as I did with my child. Together we have beat this game twice.
Some of the levels were a little difficult to figure out (even as an adult), so I would suggest the game for kids 10 and up. If a child is younger, maybe have them play with someone older to help them out. Since the games have been out for a while, there are plenty of tutorials on the levels online in case you can't figure out a level.
The mechanics of the game are easy to figure out and feel mostly natural. The graphics are noticeably better in years 5-7 than in years 1-4, but it hasn't aged terribly, and is still very playable. If anyone is familiar with the prequel and original trilogy Lego Star Wars games, the graphics in both games are much better textured than those.
Lego Harry Potter features the settings and characters from the books, has a relatively gentle learning curve, and like most lego games, hundreds of hours of replayability. This is one of the "old" lego games where characters do not speak, and so communicate the story through gestures, voice-like sounds, and silly food-prop gags.
Lego games are "couch" (split-screen) cooperative games with simple, straight-forward gameplay involving breaking stuff apart to make new stuff and solve puzzles. Puzzle solving unlocks more toys such as characters, vehicles, tools, and abilities.
Lego games are all about replayability: one must play each scenario with certain specific characters to unlock the ability to replay them with unlocked characters and toys, allowing more puzzles to be solved during the next replay, unlocking more toys, and so on until you hit 100% completion.
My wife and I both find it a pleasant way to relax, as well as an undemanding shared activity.
