The price is reasonable, it gets the stations I want, and it just works. Sound quality is not the best, but it's plenty good for what I use it for. It's a bit of work to set up, but it's not hard if you read the manual. One trick that isn't in the manual is that you can scroll through the alphabet quickly by holding down the scroll key -- it's easy to specify the call letters of a station that way, which is tiresome otherwise.
Pros:
Sound quality is excellent, especially for voice/talk. Very clear, bright sound that is easy to listen to.
Operates on an internal lithium 18650 rechargeable battery that charges via a USB micro connector. Buttons are solid and positive.
Display is small but readable.
I have had no problems connecting to my router, or and maintaining connections throughout my home. As a general rule, I would say that if you can connect a cell phone or tablet to your WiFi from any given spot in your home, you should be able to also use this radio in that same spot without connection issues.
You can connect directly to the radio using a web browser from your computer -- as long as the radio and computer are on the same network. Once connected you can manage stored favorites (up to 99). Optionally you can enter in the web address for stations that are not accessible via the Skytune database.
Cons:
The internal rechargeable battery is charged using a 5-volt USB wall charger that is NOT supplied with the radio. It does come with a charger cable, but you must supply the wall charger.
The case is very lightweight and feels like rather cheap feeling plastic.
The display is quite readable, but the backlight is on the dim side.
Using the tiny display and on-board buttons to search for various stations works, but it's tedious and is not at all a pleasurable experience.
WiFi works great, but is limited to 2.4Mhz connections. The radio will not see 5Mhz WiFi.
General:
Once connected to WiFi, you search for stations using the built-in Skytunes by searching for them using the radio's tiny display and buttons. Although this works, it's a bit of a tedious process due to the smallness of the display and the few buttons provided to control the process.
The radio also offers FM reception, which works fine with stronger local stations but does not provide reliable reception on weaker FM stations. This radio also tunes DAB and DAB+, which are a digital, over-the-air radio service used in the EU, the UK, parts of Africa, Asia and Australia. DAB and DAB+ is NOT supported in the United States, Canada and Mexico which instead use the High Definition (HD) radio. DAB and HD Radio are NOT compatible.
I've had this radio for just short time, but so far so good. I don't know how well it will hold up over time. I'll post an update down the road.
Here is the update. Although this radio does work fine, I eventually opted to return this and purchase the Ocean Digital WR-23F which is essentially the same radio, but with a larger LCD color display and a few more control buttons. It has similar performance and is much easier to use.
Edit: after using the next model up, WR-23D, I'm now advising anyone planning to buy the model you see here to check that one out first. It's not that much more expensive, and adds a larger and MUCH easier to read display, with color The larger display makes searches easier, adds a rotary volume control, and gives more operational information at-a-glance, has a nicer-to-hold rounded shape, and a front-firing speaker. In my humble opinion, you'll thank yourself for comparing these two models before making your purchase. But both can bring a tremendous range of streaming content (see below).
This digital radio is superior to fiddling with various apps in a couple of ways:
The most important is it uses Skytune. At this time (May 2021) Skytune is the impressive "killer app", in my view. The search capability in the radio coupled with Skytune's very large database really impresses me. I have 115 "favorites" already (see below for a highlight list) covering a broad range.
The ease of accessing all that content relative to other apps and programs I've tried as an alternative is what makes a dedicated radio something of a game-changer.
As a physical radio, it reminds you that humans have been mass-producing radios for nearly a century now, and over the years the interface was perfected to the point that a team of software engineers are VERY unlikely to create a better interface or more intuitive interface than a radio interface for streaming audio, so a dedicated, physical radio makes a fair bit of sense operationally.
What's missing from this radio is DIALS. The WR-23D adds a volume dial, which is much better than context-sensitive volume buttons that are only volume controls when they're not something else.
To make this a perfect product it would add a "tuning" dial to flip through stations without navigating menus, and a volume knob, even if it has to share the same knob. But all this is secondary to how convenient it is to have a dedicated device you can use to easily bring up content like:
BBC Radio 4 Extra
Science360 Radio
SciFi Old Time Radio
America's OTR Radio (multiple channels)
Audio Noir
ABC News (Australia)
ABC Radio Australia
ABC Triple J
KEXP 90.3 FM
WFMU 256K
Radio New Zealand International
DW Radio English
RPR1 (various music channels starting with RPR1)
BBC Radio 4LW
Atomic Comedy
NPR Program Stream
NRK Klassisk
Antenne Bayern (Multiple channels including "decades" channels)
Zoomer Radio CFZM Toronto
DKFM SHoegaze Radio
KROQ FM (US Listeners Only)
Radio Free Dishnuts (a great group of mostly visually impaired folks who do projects and shows)
Even US cable news channels (but you can do better)
So, great search capabilities and tons to listen to.
Minor minus is it's not all it could be user-interface-wise. Halfway there as in my view the strength of a radio interface is a tuning DIAL. A dial beats navigating menus every time.
I hope Ocean Digital will produce a portable radio with a tuning dial someday.
Top reviews from other countries
The portability for this radio expands functionality as it can go wherever you go, so long as you stay within range of a WiFi network.
Set up is straight forward. The radio uses SkyTune. Just visit the SkyTune website and browse/add stations to the radio using its IP address. Easy to charge and the sleep timer is nice for night time listening.
You have countless radio stations from all over the world at your fingertips in a form factor that resembles the portables your parents or grandparents may have used.
