The LUMIX FZ1000M2 is a hybrid camera that boasts a large 1-inch sensor and 4K PHOTO / 4K video.

The LUMIX FZ1000M2 is a hybrid camera that boasts a large 1-inch sensor and 4K PHOTO and 4K video recording capability as the latest member of popular high-zoom FZ series.

    Features

    16X Leica Dc Vario-Emarit Lens

The LUMIX FZ1000M2 features the LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens (F2.8-F4.0) with 16x optical zoom (35mm camera equivalent: 25-400mm), and achieves beautiful, evenly smooth defocus with invisible edge line. Its minimum aperture is extended from F8.0 (FZ1000 prior model) to F11, achieving F2.8-F11 at wide end and F4.0-F11 at tele end.

    1-INCH 20.1MP MOS Sensor

The LUMIX FZ1000M2 incorporates 1-inch large High Sensitivity MOS Sensor with 20.1-megapixel high resolution. This large MOS Sensor improves S/N ratio, resulting in dramatic reduction of noise even in shooting at ISO 12800*. Rich amount of light help produce impressive defocus with shallow depth of field.

    *The max. ISO 25600 (Extended).

    New Monochrome Modes

For more creative expression, L.Monochrome and L.Monocheome D modes are newly added to Photo Style, making it possible to shoot dynamic monochrome photos with emphasized highlights and shadows while preserving the details. The user can adjust the grain effect between High/Standard/Low for more creative monochrome photo shooting.

    4K Video And 4K Photo

The LUMIX FZ1000M2 is an advanced photographic tool for recording not only great photos but also high quality videos even in 4K. It features an outstanding 4K video recording capability (QFHD 4K: 3840x2160, at 30p or 24p in MP4*1*2. With the 4K PHOTO, users can capture the fleeting photo opportunities at 30 fps in 8-megapixel equivalent resolution by extracting a frame of the most photogenic timing out of the 4K burst file to save as a photo. Three exclusive functions are integrated to make the 4K photography even easier; 4K Burst Shooting, 4K Burst (Start/Stop) and 4K Pre-burst. The 4K Burst shooting allows consecutive shooting at 30 fps, which can be used just like a photo burst shooting.

*1 4K video can be recorded up to 29 minutes 59second. When recording motion pictures in 4K, use a card rated as UHS Speed Class 3.

*2 Motion image can be recorded up to 29 min 59 sec depending on the recording format and the camera’s sales area.

    Auto Marking Functions

Choosing the best shot out of hundreds of frames recorded with 4K PHOTO is now easier with the newly added Auto Marking function. It lets you jump to the nearest frame where the differences are obvious between consecutive frames to minimize the time it takes to choose the best shot.

    Sequence Composition Functions

Sequence Composition makes it possible to make a stromotion image by synthesizing multiple images shot at a fixed frame with 4K PHOTO. A unique image reflecting the subject’s motion can be produced easily in the camera without needing a special retouching process.

    Post Focus Mode

The LUMIX FZ1000M2 comes with the Post Focus function that enables users to select in-focus area even after shooting. It is helpful in situations like macro shooting where severe focusing is required or for changing expressions by changing focused subject. This function has been developed by combining the high-speed, high-precision DFD (Depth From Defocus) auto focus technology and the 4K technology.

    Focus Stacking Mode

Newly integrated Focus Stacking function enables users to adjust focus area after shooting by combining multiple images shot with Post Focus function in the camera. Users do not need to establish a focus point during shooting but they can get the image with the defocus as they want or pan-focus image by selecting the focus area after shooting. This is beneficial when shooting macro shots of insects, small accessories and so on.

    Focusing Technology

For even faster response and higher mobility, the LUMIX FZ1000II integrates a dedicated linear motor into the focus system. The Light Speed AF with an adoption of DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology even shortens the time to set focus. It also boasts high speed burst shooting in RAW. The LUMIX FZ1000M2 is capable of releasing mechanical shutter at max.1/4000 sec and even at 1/16000 with electronic shutter, which reduces washouts even under strong sunlight.

    Viewfinder And Touch Display

The FZ1000M2 boasts high-precision, high-speed OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) LVF (Live View Finder). With 0.39-inch 2,360k-dot high resolution in 4:3 aspect, the new LVF boasts approx 0.74x (35mm camera equiv.) magnification and 100% field of view. With an eyepoint of approximately 20 mm, it offers high visibility with comfort for users wearing glasses. It is always sharp and clear from the center all the way to the corners. The new 3.0-inch 1,240k-dot free-angle rear monitor adopting touch control rotates 180 degrees to the side and tilts 270 degrees up and down offers approx. 100% of field of view. Adopting a static-type touch control system, it immediately lets users set focus on the subject simply by touching the screen and releasing the shutter. It is free and easy to enlarge the target point with fingertips to set precise focus.

    Front And Rear Dials

Operability is also improved on LUMIX FZ1000M2 allowing intuitive control. The front/rear dual dial system enables direct setting over shutter speed and aperture. For quick access to the target setting menu, the user can assign the frequently-used functions to a total of 13 Fn buttons including 3 new buttons on the lens barrel and 5 on the touch control menu.

    Wireless Technology

The FZ1000M2 integrates Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity to offer a more flexible shooting experience and instant image sharing with easy operation. Once the camera is connected to a smartphone or tablet installed with Panasonic's dedicated application software Panasonic Image App for iOS / Android, users can shoot, browse and share images remotely. Users can choose the picture quality of the photos to transfer using Image App. Compatibility with Bluetooth 4.2 (called BLE: Bluetooth Low Energy) enables constant connection with a smartphone/tablet with minimum power consumption. This enables the camera to activate by simply using a smartphone/tablet or to add GPS geotag on the photos automatically.

Superlative viewfinder makes this an A+ camera: insanely good image stabilization (see handheld photo of moon)
PROS == By far the most important thing that makes me like this camera is the viewfinder, with a large and bright display that provides WYSYWIG when in automatic mode (i.e. what you see is what you get). It is a gianl improvement over LCD monitors, both flip-out and on the back of the camera, for several reasons:First and foremost, I can see with significantly greater clarity through the viewfinder than on an LCD monitor. And... very very crucial .... photography is all about seeing.Second, I find that when I use the viewfinder, the camera is easier to control, because when it is pressed up against my face, my fingers are much closer to the camera than when I am using an LCD monitor. Unlike with an LCD monitor, my fingers are in a constant orientation with respect to the camera, which helps me to better access the controls without having to look at them.Third, I find it easier and faster to navigate menus and to change settings like F-stop and ISO and shutter speed when the camera is pressed against my face.Fourth, very very important, it's easier to take photos outdoors with your eye pressed against the viewfinder excluding extraneous light than it is with an LCD monitor, especially under bright sun..Before closing my comments about the viewfinder versus the flip out LCD monitor, I should note that the flip out on the FZ1000 is nice and flexible -- and remains very useful under certain circumstances -- if you want to shoot from low down in a situation where you don't want to bend, or high up if you are in a crowd or need to see over some other obstacle. But most of the time these days I find myself shooting from the viewfinder, because I can see so much better..== Excellent performance in indoor photographyI originally got this cam because I wanted to take pictures indoors under normal levels of artificial light with ultra rapid focus and exposure control. By "normal levels of artificial light" I mean no light coming in from windows, no special artificial lighting, and no flash. Just the amount of light you would get in a normally lit windowless office or in a living room at night time or in a furniture showroom. This cam is very good at doing this when it is in automatic mode, yielding amazingly good hand held pix in poor light, at incredibly low shutter speeds like a quarter of a second, without a tripod, because of superlatively strong image stabilization, and this happens even at substantial zooms like 200mm. Any camera without image stabilization would be showing huge amounts of blur and shake. And I should add that color balance in low artificial light is good, when in automatic mode. With candid pictures of people under normal living room lighting at night time, the FZ1000 usually does surprisingly well in automatic mode. I was enormously surprised to find that with exposure of one quarter second, most pictures of most people come out quite well, because with most people, there is much less movement than I expected to find - except when the person is speaking or eating. As might be expected, under low light the FZ1000 in automatic mode does not do well in capturing rapidly moving people or other objects. But setting a high shutter speed and a high ISO value this camera copes quite well. It's true that high ISO's make photos more grainy, but in pictures of people it's the expression that counts, IMHO.In this regard, shooting in low light, the FZ1000 and FZ200 are about equivalent.== Crisp controls that are not mushy or muddy.== The camera is the result of a collaboration between Leica and Panasonic, and has nearly identical hardware to a Leica V-Lux Type 114 that costs a lot more, though the software is different.== High capacity zoom lens immensely improve the ability to take good pictures, because one can often get closeups of subjects that would be hard or impossible to get close to, and because one has much more flexibility in determining what to include and what to exclude from the picture. On the FZ1000 the 400mm optical zoom magnifies images to eight times a normal 50mm lens and with digital zoom to 1600mm you can get 32 times normal magnification. Picture quality is excellent up to 400, and in my opinion remains quite good at 800mm when there's plenty of light.== Fast focusing and fast determination of exposure settings and almost zero shutter lag, which allows the capturing of fleeting events.== In my opinion feels solid and well built.== Allows me to display live images on a Panasonic Viera TV set via HDMI cable. I don't know whether it will do this on other TVs. This is really helpful for portraits where you want the subject to be able to see their image on a TV screen so that they can adjust their expression.CONS== This camera is a bit of a power hog. If you want to shoot a lot of footage Take several spare batteries with you . I think it gets worse when image stabilization is switched on.== In SCN mode there are far too many presets that differ only by tiny amounts. And one very valuable preset that was in the FZ200 has been deleted, namely the "Through glass" preset, that improved images taken through glass windows.CONCLUSIONSThis camera is very flexible and takes excellent pictures in automatic mode in a huge variety of situations. Some folks sneer about "point and shoot" automation, but I really like a well designed automatic mode because it allows me to concentrate on the content of the picture rather than worrying about settings, and lets me grab shots that I would otherwise miss. I think that about 9 times out of 10, automatic mode on this camera does a better job than I would do if I spent time fiddling in manual mode.P.S. I attach a hand held photo of the moon taken with maximum extended zoom of 3200 mm, leaning against a car for the hand held shot. This shot demonstrates the incredibly good image stabilization offered by the FZ1000. This image has had no postprocessing and is not cropped. To achieve maximum zoom, I set Program mode, electronic zoom enabled, picture size of 5MB (and not the 20MB option).

First and foremost, I can see with significantly greater clarity through the viewfinder than on an LCD monitor. And... very very crucial .... photography is all about seeing.

Second, I find that when I use the viewfinder, the camera is easier to control, because when it is pressed up against my face, my fingers are much closer to the camera than when I am using an LCD monitor. Unlike with an LCD monitor, my fingers are in a constant orientation with respect to the camera, which helps me to better access the controls without having to look at them.

Third, I find it easier and faster to navigate menus and to change settings like F-stop and ISO and shutter speed when the camera is pressed against my face.

Fourth, very very important, it's easier to take photos outdoors with your eye pressed against the viewfinder excluding extraneous light than it is with an LCD monitor, especially under bright sun..

Before closing my comments about the viewfinder versus the flip out LCD monitor, I should note that the flip out on the FZ1000 is nice and flexible -- and remains very useful under certain circumstances -- if you want to shoot from low down in a situation where you don't want to bend, or high up if you are in a crowd or need to see over some other obstacle. But most of the time these days I find myself shooting from the viewfinder, because I can see so much better..

== Excellent performance in indoor photography

I originally got this cam because I wanted to take pictures indoors under normal levels of artificial light with ultra rapid focus and exposure control.

It's true that high ISO's make photos more grainy, but in pictures of people it's the expression that counts, IMHO.

In this regard, shooting in low light, the FZ1000 and FZ200 are about equivalent.

== Crisp controls that are not mushy or muddy.

== The camera is the result of a collaboration between Leica and Panasonic, and has nearly identical hardware to a Leica V-Lux Type 114 that costs a lot more, though the software is different.

== High capacity zoom lens immensely improve the ability to take good pictures, because one can often get closeups of subjects that would be hard or impossible to get close to, and because one has much more flexibility in determining what to include and what to exclude from the picture. On the FZ1000 the 400mm optical zoom magnifies images to eight times a normal 50mm lens and with digital zoom to 1600mm you can get 32 times normal magnification. Picture quality is excellent up to 400, and in my opinion remains quite good at 800mm when there's plenty of light.

== Fast focusing and fast determination of exposure settings and almost zero shutter lag, which allows the capturing of fleeting events.

== In my opinion feels solid and well built.

== Allows me to display live images on a Panasonic Viera TV set via HDMI cable. I don't know whether it will do this on other TVs. This is really helpful for portraits where you want the subject to be able to see their image on a TV screen so that they can adjust their expression.

    CONS

== This camera is a bit of a power hog. If you want to shoot a lot of footage Take several spare batteries with you . I think it gets worse when image stabilization is switched on.

== In SCN mode there are far too many presets that differ only by tiny amounts. And one very valuable preset that was in the FZ200 has been deleted, namely the "Through glass" preset, that improved images taken through glass windows.

    CONCLUSIONS

This camera is very flexible and takes excellent pictures in automatic mode in a huge variety of situations. Some folks sneer about "point and shoot" automation, but I really like a well designed automatic mode because it allows me to concentrate on the content of the picture rather than worrying about settings, and lets me grab shots that I would otherwise miss. I think that about 9 times out of 10, automatic mode on this camera does a better job than I would do if I spent time fiddling in manual mode.

I am a amateur photographer who has tried different cameras/brands in his life. This is by far the best one in every dimension. The JPEG engine is superior and produces stunning photos with bright colors. Most of them do not require post-processing which is good for a photographer like me who does not have the time to process every photograph taken.

    The CONS are:

    1. Heavy and bulky in comparison to other cameras,
    2. The automatic exposure control is not the best and forces you to manually adjust exposure when the sun is too bright (e.g. at noon) or when there is not enough light (e.g. overcast days).
    3. It takes a lot of time to fully learn how to control the camera and its multiple adjustments. Too many options make it difficult to set it up easily.

Having said that, I love it and totally recommend it to anyone who would like to have a travel camera that takes stunning pictures and excellent videos without the need of post processing (please see attached picture).

Compared with my other DSLR and mirrorless cameras, this camera is light weight although the size is similar.

This wonderful Lumiz FZ1000 is sure a gem at the price I paid at $579 Cdn. Images are also comparable, or even better in some conditions, than my Nikon D90 and J1. The decent stabilized zoom comes in handy too.
